Neste artigo, descrevo um projeto de educação sobre diversidade e justiça social, no qual meus alunos estagiários conduzem uma pesquisa de objetos étnicos em Tucson, Arizona. As referências ...conceituais utilizadas para envolver os alunos na pesquisa de objetos incluem três aportes teóricos inter-relacionados: a zona de contato (PRATT, 1991), objetos sociais (ENGESTRÖM, 2005), e estética relacional (BOURRIAUD, 2002). Através deste projeto, os estudantes se envolveram em diálogos e interações na comunidade com indivíduos e grupos de pessoas de diferentes origens étnicas e culturais, o que os ajudou a sair de suas próprias zonas de conforto. Os objetivos educacionais deste projeto incluem: superar a ansiedade social interétnica, desfazer equívocos e estereótipos, proporcionar a aprendizagem autorreflexiva e desenvolver empatia.
Living kidney donation from Gitelman's syndrome (GS) patients remains very rare. Long-term renal prognosis of donor and recipient patients remains unknown. We report a 67-year-old man with GS, ...harbouring a mutation of the
gene, who donated his kidney for transplant. Five years post-transplantation, his clinical condition and biochemical parameters remained stable with close monitoring and follow-up. Patients with non-complicated GS can be considered eligible to donate their kidney for transplant.
Little is known about the effectiveness of managerial influence tactics on job creativity and performance in the airline industry. Based on previous research, eleven hypotheses and a theoretical ...model was conducted under the assumption that individual influence tactics affect job creativity, job creativity has a positive influence on job performance, and job creativity mediates both influence tactics and job performance. This study implemented a quantitative method using multiple regression analysis, a three-step multiple regression analysis, and a Sobel test. According to an empirical method, among nine total influence tactics, inspirational appeals, ingratiation, exchange, and pressure acted as crucial drivers of job creativity, which had the greatest influence on job performance. Job creativity also had a mediating effect. On the other hand, the tactic of legitimating also positively influenced job creativity unlike previous studies. These findings may help managers by providing some insights for promoting job creativity and performance.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of open innovation, especially focusing on technological M&A, on subsequent innovation and changes to the firm’s core technological ...portfolio.
Design/methodology/approach
The study suggests three types of core technological areas, based on prior focus and experience in technological categories. These are 1) the existing core area, in which the acquirer firm retains its knowledge and expertise, 2) the enhanced core area, where knowledge and expertise in the acquirer firm’s insufficient areas are strengthened, and 3) the new core area, i.e. new knowledge fields in which the acquirer firm ventures into. The study then analyzes the effects of two key knowledge characteristics of the target firm, similarity and complementarity, on post-M&A innovation outcomes in each of the three core technological areas.
Findings
The results confirm that while none of the investigated knowledge characteristics of the target firm is advantageous for post-M&A innovation outcomes in existing core areas, similarity of the target firm does facilitate post-M&A innovation outcomes in enhanced core areas. Moreover, the results confirm that complementarity of the target firm is beneficial for post-M&A innovation outcomes in new core areas.
Originality/value
The study explains the reconfiguration mechanism of a firm’s core technological portfolio. It also suggests an extended framework to analyze innovation outcomes in more detail. Moreover, the study helps to explain why most M&As result in failure.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating, progressive neurodegenerative disease resulting in memory loss and a severe reduction in the ability to perform activities of daily living. Ethnicity-related genetic factors promoting the development of dementias among African Americans (AA) and increased risk among women for developing AD indicates that AA women with a parental history of AD are at great risk for developing AD. This phase I study assessed the impact of a 12 week, 20-lesson adapted Argentine Tango intervention (n = 24) to a no-contact control group (n = 10) on measures of plasma inflammatory markers, cognition, and motor and psychosocial performance in middle-aged AA woman at increased risk for AD by virtue of parental history. Some woman (n = 16) were also caregivers; thus, the impact of the intervention on caregiving burden was examined in this subset. Preliminary analysis of efficacy was conducted with significance tests on biomarkers and key measures of cognition, including visuospatial and executive function, balance, and strength. After 12 weeks, Tango participants had significantly decreased inflammatory cytokine, including reductions in IL-7 (p = 0.003), IFN-γ (p = 0.011), TNFα (p = 0.011), and MCP-1 (p = 0.042) compared to controls. Large effects were noted for the Tango group on tests of executive functioning (d = 0.89), and inhibition (p = 0.031). Participants in Tango improved in dynamic and static balance (p = 0.018) and functional lower body strength (p = 0.023). Secondary assessment revealed trends favoring the intervention group were noted in spatial cognition and executive function. Moderate effects were noted in caregiving burden measures among the subset of caregivers. These data demonstrate substantial reductions in inflammatory biomarkers along with cognitive and motor improvements through a non-pharmacologic, affordable intervention among a small, well-characterized cohort of AA women with a parental history of AD.
COVID-19 readmissions are associated with increased patient mortality and healthcare system strain. This retrospective cohort study of PCR-confirmed COVID-19 positive adults (>18 years) hospitalized ...and readmitted within 30 days of discharge from index admission was performed at eight Atlanta hospitals from March to December 2020. The objective was to describe COVID-19 patient-level demographics and clinical characteristics, and community-level social determinants of health (SDoH) that contribute to 30-day readmissions. Demographics, comorbidities, COVID-19 treatment, and discharge disposition data were extracted from the index admission. ZIP codes were linked to a demographic/lifestyle database interpolating to community-level SDoH. Of 7155 patients with COVID-19, 463 (6.5%) had 30-day, unplanned, all-cause hospital readmissions. Statistically significant differences were not found in readmissions stratified by age, sex, race, or ethnicity. Patients with a high-risk Charlson Comorbidity Index had higher odds of readmission (OR 4.8 (95% CI: 2.1 to 11.0)). Remdesivir treatment and intensive care unit (ICU) care were associated with lower odds of readmission (OR 0.5 (95% CI: 0.4 to 0.8) and OR 0.5 (95% CI: 0.4 to 0.7), respectively). Patients residing in communities with larger average household size were less likely to be readmitted (OR 0.7 (95% CI: 0.5 to 0.9). In this cohort, patients who received remdesivir, were cared for in an ICU, and resided in ZIP codes with higher proportions of residents with increased social support had lower odds of readmission. These patient-level factors and community-level SDoH may be used to identify patients with COVID-19 who are at increased risk of readmission.
Trochlear dysplasia is an important risk factor associated with patellofemoral instability, but it remains difficult to classify with consistency. Currently there is no objective way to quantify the ...dysplasia. The purpose of this study is to define and quantify objectively the trochlear morphology by volume and length via computed tomography (CT).
One-hundred control patients (136 knees) were retrospectively reviewed and compared to 36 consecutive patients (72 knees) who were treated surgically for recurrent patellar instability and known trochlear dysplasia based on a lateral radiograph. Trochlear morphology was analyzed from a pre-operative CT and data presented as trochlear sulcus volume trochlear length. To determine where along the trochlear length dysplasia is most variable, the trochlear length was radiographically divided into thirds, volume was quantified along that section and compared to control trochlear.
A significant difference in trochlear morphology exists between cohorts, volume (1.98 vs 3.77cm3) and length (31.97 vs 34.66mm) (p<0.05). However, there appears to be a gender based difference in trochlea morphology. The trochlea volumetric analysis between the female cohorts (L: 2.02cm3 vs. 2.94cm3, R: 1.95cm3 vs. 2.93cm3) demonstrated significantly less volume in instability patients (p<0.001). The proximal third of the trochlear contributed the majority of dysplasia difference determined by comparing mean trochlear volume, 95% of the difference. This difference decreased in distal sections, 53% and 32% respectively.
This reproducible technique can be used to quantify the trochlea morphology, in order to describe the severity of a dysplasia.
In this paper, I describe a diversity and social justice education project, in which my pre-service students conduct an ethnic object research in Tucson, Arizona. The conceptual framework for ...engaging students with the object research draws from three interrelated theoretical backgrounds: the contact zone (PRATT, 1991), social objects (ENGESTRÖM, 2005), and Relational Aesthetics (BOURRIAUD, 2002). Through this project, students were engaged in dialogues and interaction with individuals and groups of people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds in the community, which helped them break out of their own social comfort zones. The learning outcome of this project includes: overcoming interethnic social anxiety, challenging misconceptions and stereotypes, self-reflective learning, and developing empathy.
In this article, we explore three Daoist concepts in East Asian historical and cultural contexts, addressing Daoism and its educational significance in connecting with new materialism theory. We ...argue that Daoism's nonaction, the interdependence of things and concepts, and nonlinguistic learning allow us to expand art education from the Cartesian focus on the mind to a balanced art education practice of including affects and nonlinguistic ways of exploration. We also provide suggestions for art education pedagogy and practice reflecting on both Daoism and new materialism's theoretical constructs.
Drawing from the rich philosophical traditions of East Asia, we redress the questions and inquiry methods of teaching about East Asian artists and their works in the classroom, rejecting European ...White master frameworks when appreciating the arts of East Asia. To illustrate our approach, we have chosen two contemporary Asian artists, Do-ho Suh and Wou-Ki Zao, and we discuss why and how European White pedagogy has limitations in appreciating these works. As an alternative, we focus on a holistic lens of viewing East Asian artistic expressions, which is one of the key methods to understand artworks by many East Asian artists (Sullivan & Vainker, 2018; Stanley-Baker, 2014). To make East Asian art curriculum culturally responsive and authentic, we suggest that art educators adopt the holistic approach of teaching the East Asian art, in which art is seamlessly weaved with worldview, culture, and philosophy as one.
