This article examines connections between games and BDSM (consensual bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism), theoretically speaking (in their respective research ...areas) as well as in practice. A common grounding behind these connections is the consideration of play as a foundational component in games and game studies as well as in BDSM practices and the studies of BDSM as a cultural phenomenon. We identify five sets of relevant connections. First, there are direct comparisons between the two types of play. Second, several live-action role-playing games have been made about BDSM, or for BDSM. Third, many other games have borrowed ideas from BDSM, as well, as have some BDSM activities, in turn, from games and play. Fourth, queer game studies frequently discuss subversive and transgressive play practices, which provide a fruitful context for analyzing play elements in BDSM, and BDSM-inspired elements in games. And fifth, both games and BDSM are frequently discussed in the research contexts related to performance, theater, and rituals, which forms a potential bridge between these activities. Through this five-strand exploratory analysis, we show how deeply interconnected these two realms are, even if the connection is only rarely mentioned, and to this date, not fully recognized as a valid research topic.

Tässä artikkelissa luodaan yleiskuva suomalaisesta journalismista videonjakoalusta TikTokissa. Tarkastelua varten on kerätty 3 795 videon suuruinen aineisto vakiintuneiden mediatoimijoiden ...tileiltä. Analysoimme tässä tutkimuksessa videoihin liittyvää metadataa määrällisin ja laadullisin menetelmin. Tavoitteemme on selvittää, millaista suomalainen, journalistiseksi ymmärrettävissä oleva sisältö TikTokissa on tällä hetkellä, ja mitä sen aiheista ja toimivuudesta on pääteltävissä hashtagien ja eri sitouttavuusindikaattorien (katsomiskerrat, tykkäykset, kommentit, jaot) avulla. Peilaamalla metadatasta tehtyjä havaintoja TikTokin yleisiin toimintaperiaatteisiin ja algoritmisiin reunaehtoihin saadaan selville, millaisia menestymisen mahdollisuuksia (suomalaisilla) journalistisilla sisällöillä ylipäätään on alustalla. Lopuksi luomme katsauksen siihen, mitä journalismin ja somealustojen yhteenkietoutuminen tarkoittaa laajemmassa teoreettisessa kontekstissa, ja millaista metodologiaa aiheen tutkimus vaatii.

Sihvonen examines the technical and material specificities of The Sims mods, as well as their cultural context. Viewed as a manifestation of participatory culture, modding makes PC games ultimately malleable: players reconfigure the game by creating new content, altering the code and changing the behaviours of the game engine. Using a semiotic framework, Sihvonen suggests a signification process that includes representation, interpretation, investigation and experimentation with the game system and rules.

This article examines the branding of the new Tampere University in Finland and the reactions it evoked in Finnish social media and news media between 2018–2020. The merger of the University of ...Tampere and Tampere University of Technology into a new foundation-based university provoked considerable public debate and sparked uproar over the communication style and practices of the university’s new management. The main reason for the outcry was that the new governance model of the university ignored the traditional democratic way of running a university. Our article contributes to the growing literature on public relations communication in higher education by focusing on promotional culture and the role of the changing media landscape in university branding. We analyze how and why the brand messages were contested and transformed into memes and satirical commentaries on social media. When the university’s management tried to restrain this subversive play with legal sanctions, the issue escalated into the news media. Our qualitative analysis demonstrates the possible repercussions of a quasi-corporate style of communication on the credibility of the university as a higher education institution in a hybrid media environment.
This article examines communicative anthropomorphization, that is, assigning of humanlike features, of socialbots in communication between humans and bots. Situated in the field of human-machine ...communication, the article asks how socialbots are devised as anthropomorphized communication companions and explores the ways in which human users anthropomorphize bots through communication. Through an analysis of two datasets of bots interacting with humans on social media, we find that bots are communicatively anthropomorphized by directly addressing them, assigning agency to them, drawing parallels between humans and bots, and assigning emotions and opinions to bots. We suggest that socialbots inherently have anthropomorphized characteristics and affordances, but their anthropomorphization is completed and actualized by humans through communication. We conceptualize this process as communicative anthropomorphization.
Tässä artikkelissa analysoimme Tampereen yliopiston organisaatiouudistukseen ja erityisesti sen uuteen brändi- ja viestintästrategiaan kytkeytyviä legitimiteettikamppailuja hybridissä mediatilassa. ...Aineistona käytämme sekä journalistisesta mediasta (n=39) että sosiaalisesta mediasta (n=9 303) kerättyjä puheenvuoroja. Käsitteellistämme Tampereen yliopistouudistusta koskevat huolet uuden muotoisen yliopiston legitimiteettiä koskevina argumentteina ja keskusteluina. Niiden avulla tutkimme, millä tavoin uudistettua Tampereen yliopistoa pyrittiin legitimoimaan ja delegitimoimaan median ja sosiaalisen median julkisissa keskusteluissa keväällä 2020 ja millaista vuorovaikutusta hybridin mediatilan eri mediamuotojen välillä voidaan havaita. Analyysimme eri mediamuodoissa esiintyvistä legitimiteetin arvioista osoittaa, miten mediatilan monimuotoistuminen tuottaa ongelmia monikohteiselle sidosryhmäviestinnälle, jossa organisaation legitimiteettiä pyritään muutostilanteessa rakentamaan. Tuloksemme korostavat viestinnän ja viestintätyylien merkitystä legitimaatiossa: kamppailujen keskiössä on yliopiston uudenlainen, yritysmaailmasta ammentava viestintätyyli, jonka metaforat päätyvät verkkokeskusteluissa kritiikin työvälineiksi.
This article analyzes specific characteristics of value created through digital scarcity and blockchain-proven ownership in cryptogames. Our object of study is CryptoKitties, the first instance of a ...blockchain-based game that has garnered media recognition and financial interest. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the limits of scarcity in value construction for owners of CryptoKitties tokens, manifested as breedable virtual cats. Our work extends the trends set out by earlier cryptocurrency studies from the perspective of cultural studies. For the purpose of this article, we rely on open blockchain analytics such as DappRadar and Etherscan, as well as player-created analytics, backed by a one-year-long participant observation period in the said game for research material. Combining theoretical cryptocurrency and Bitcoin studies, open data analysis, and virtual ethnography enables a grounded discussion on blockchain-based game design and play.
Toimivat tietoliikenne- ja viestintäjärjestelmät ovat digitaalisessa maailmassa tärkeä osa yhteiskunnan perusinfrastruktuuria, mutta ne eivät ole riippumattomia poliittisista ideologioista, ...kansallisvaltioiden päämääristätai kaupallisista intresseistä. Tässä teoreettisessa artikkelissa tätä infrastruktuuria tarkastellaan käsitteellistäen se kybertoimintaympäristöksi. Koska kybertoimintaympäristön olemassaolo määrittyy erilaisten uhkienkautta, kohdistuu kiinnostuksemme ennen muuta kyberturvallisuuteen. Tämän artikkelin tavoite on yhtäältä analysoida kyberturvallisuuden käsitettä ja toisaalta luoda ymmärrystä siitä, miten valtiolliset strategiatekstitja uutistekstit osaltaan rakentavat kyberturvallisuutta toimintaympäristönä. Tutkimuksessa osoitetaan, että kyberturvallisuus on tietoverkkojen ydintoimintoihin kytkeytyvä mutta ristiriitainen ilmiö. Kyberhyökkäyksiinliittyvä uutisointi keskittyy sekä uhkien hallitsemattomuuteen että vahvoihin toimijoihin, jotka taistelevat niitä vastaan. Kyberturvallisuusstrategiat taas ovat keino hälventää ristiriitaista käsitystä valtioista kansalaisten valvojina ja vakuuttaa heidät siitä, että valtion toimet kybermaailmassa ovat heidän parhaakseen.
This article provides a systematic review of laws, guidelines, and best practices related to the Nordic influencer industry as of the year 2020. We highlight some nuanced differences or shortfalls ...across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and give some policy recommendations to national governments and industry in order to maintain a professional Nordic standard. The article identifies a degree of social, cultural, and economic coherence in the Nordic context that allows for the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish influencer industries to be viewed as a collaborative entity. It then reviews the status of income and tax procedures, and the regulation of commercial disclosures for influencers in the Nordic region. It is hoped that this research contributes to strengthening the integrity and rigour of the Nordic influencer industry to serve as a model for other regional networks of influencers.
