ABSTRACT
The current and next observation seasons will detect hundreds of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binary systems coalescence at cosmological distances. When combined with independent ...electromagnetic measurements, the source redshift will be known, and we will be able to obtain precise measurements of the Hubble constant H0 via the distance–redshift relation. However, most observed mergers are not expected to have electromagnetic counterparts, which prevents a direct redshift measurement. In this scenario, one possibility is to use the dark sirens method that statistically marginalizes over all the potential host galaxies within the GW location volume to provide a probabilistic source redshift. Here we presented H0 measurements using two new dark sirens compared to previous analyses using DECam data: GW190924$\_$021846 and GW200202$\_$154313. The photometric redshifts of the possible host galaxies of these two events are acquired from the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey (DELVE) carried out on the Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo. The combination of the H0 posterior from GW190924$\_$021846 and GW200202$\_$154313 together with the bright siren GW170817 leads to $H_{0} = 68.84^{+15.51}_{-7.74}\, \rm {km\, s^{-1}\, Mpc^{-1}}$. Including these two dark sirens improves the 68 per cent confidence interval (CI) by 7 per cent over GW170817 alone. This demonstrates that the addition of well-localized dark sirens in such analysis improves the precision of cosmological measurements. Using a sample containing 10 well-localized dark sirens observed during the third LIGO/Virgo observation run, without the inclusion of GW170817, we determine a measurement of $H_{0} = 76.00^{+17.64}_{-13.45}\, \rm {km\, s^{-1}\, Mpc^{-1}}$.
Background: Phase angle is an indicator based on reactance and resistance obtained from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Although its biological meaning is still not clear, phase angle appears ...to have an important prognostic role. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate population averages and SDs of phase angle that can be used as reference values. Design: BIA and other methods used to evaluate body composition, including hydrodensitometry and total body water, were completed in 1967 healthy adults aged 18-94 y. Phase angle was calculated directly from body resistance and reactance, and fat mass (FM) was estimated from the combination of weight, hydrodensitometry, and total body water by using the 3-compartment Siri equation. Phase angle values were compared across categories of sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and percentage FM. Results: Phase angle was significantly (P < 0.001) smaller in women than in men and was lower with greater age (P < 0.001). Phase angle increased with an increase in BMI and was significantly inversely associated with percentage fat in men. Phase angle was significantly predicted from sex, age, BMI, and percentage FM in multiple regression models. Conclusions: Phase angle differs across categories of sex, age, BMI, and percentage fat. These reference values can serve as a basis for phase angle evaluations in the clinical setting.
Sub-picosecond magnetisation manipulation via femtosecond optical pumping has attracted wide attention ever since its original discovery in 1996. However, the spatial evolution of the magnetisation ...is not yet well understood, in part due to the difficulty in experimentally probing such rapid dynamics. Here, we find evidence of a universal rapid magnetic order recovery in ferrimagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via nonlinear magnon processes. We identify magnon localisation and coalescence processes, whereby localised magnetic textures nucleate and subsequently interact and grow in accordance with a power law formalism. A hydrodynamic representation of the numerical simulations indicates that the appearance of noncollinear magnetisation via optical pumping establishes exchange-mediated spin currents with an equivalent 100% spin polarised charge current density of 10
A cm
. Such large spin currents precipitate rapid recovery of magnetic order after optical pumping. The magnon processes discussed here provide new insights for the stabilization of desired meta-stable states.
Betulinic acid (BA) and its natural analogues betulin (BN), betulonic (BoA), and 23-hydroxybetulinic (HBA) acids are lupane-type pentacyclic triterpenoids. They are present in many plants and display ...important biological activities. This review focuses on the chemical transformations used to functionalize BA/BN/BoA/HBA in order to obtain new derivatives with improved biological activity, covering the period since 2013 to 2018. It is divided by the main chemical transformations reported in the literature, including amination, esterification, alkylation, sulfonation, copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling, hydroxylation, and aldol condensation reactions. In addition, the synthesis of heterocycle-fused BA/HBA derivatives and polymer‒BA conjugates are also addressed. The new derivatives are mainly used as antitumor agents, but there are other biological applications such as antimalarial activity, drug delivery, bioimaging, among others.
The Taiamã Ecological Station (TES) is a federal conservation unit created in 1981 to preserve nature and to support scientific research. The TES is a river island delimited by a bifurcation of the ...Paraguay River, with a total area of 11,555 ha. It is located in the north of the Pantanal biome (16°51'S 57°35'W), and the area of TES is part of the Cáceres and Poconé municipalities of Mato Grosso state in Brazil. Several groups of animals have been studied within the TES; however, lists of any amphibian and reptile species have been compiled for this conservation unit. Our objective was to generate a list of amphibian and reptile species for the TES. TES macrohabitats include floating fields (batumes), flooded fields, monospecific forests (Erythrina fusca), lakes and polyspecific forests. Polyspecific forests (pioneer forests along rivers) were the study area because they have firm land areas in the dry season and an adequate environment for installing traps in the soil.
The development of high-processing-capability microprocessors allows the implementation of new digital control methods for neutral-point-clamped (NPC) multilevel converter in power-electronic ...applications. This paper presents a new predictive digital control method for multilevel converters, called "fast predictive." This method computes the optimal vector using the NPC three-phase multilevel dynamic model equations just once in each control cycle, while current predictive methods need 27 calculations. The closest vector to the optimal vector is found by minimizing the distance between each one of the 27 available vectors to the optimal vector. Space vector modulation could be also used. The obtained performance is similar to the predictive optimal control that uses the converter model to find all the 27 responses of the multilevel and then searches for the vector that minimizes control errors. Relative to predictive optimal control, the fast predictive improves digital processing speed by at least 150% in multilevel converters with 27 vectors. This speed improvement would allow multilevel converters with five or higher number of levels (125 instead of 27 vectors) to be controlled using the same sampling frequency of the three-level inverter. The fast-predictive controller is used in a multilevel rectifier with near-unity power factor to enforce the ac currents. Fast predictive control is also used in the rectifier dc voltage to reduce sensitivity of the dc voltage to dc load disturbances. The simulation and experimental results show that the fast-predictive controller is able to control the ac currents of a three-phase multilevel rectifier, achieving nearly 1.5% total harmonic distortion while balancing the capacitors' dc voltages. The use of predictive control to regulate the dc voltage shows an improvement of approximately 7% compared to a proportional-integral controller.
Abstract Therapeutic ultrasound is transforming the treatment of a range of malignancies in a non-invasive and non-systemic manner. Low-intensity ultrasound (LIUS) has been proposed to selectively ...eradicate cancer cells but the underlying biological mechanisms remains unknown. To gain an understanding of this phenomenon, 2D breast cancer monocultures were sonicated at varying acoustic intensities (0.1–0.5 W·cm −2 ) and excitation times (1–10 minutes). Additionally, 2D monocultures consisting of healthy cell lines were sonicated at varying acoustic intensities (0.1–0.5 W·cm −2 ) to determine any distinguishing biological responses. To begin recapitulating in vivo conditions, breast cancer cells were also seeded into 3D collagen hydrogels. At a 1 MHz frequency, 20% duty cycle, 100 Hz pulse repetition frequency, a significant drop in cancer cell viability is observed at a sonication intensity of 0.5 W·cm −2 and over 10 minute excitation time. Healthy counterparts subjected to the same parameters revealed no distinguishing effects. Sonication of breast cancer cells seeded in 3D collagen hydrogels revealed no effect in cell viability compared to non-sonicated controls. The acoustic wave propagation software OptimUS was used to determine the influence culturing plates have on ultrasound propagation, revealing these materials can significantly vary the acoustic field at frequencies relevant to LIUS.

This study focused on the application of three strains of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei to assimilate cholesterol in cream and butter. The strains were enclosed in calcium-alginate beads and incubated in cream at 30 °C for 15 h. Immobilization of lactobacilli cultures in calcium-alginate beads resulted in a 23% reduction in cholesterol (p < 0.05) in cream, whereas a negligible reduction was observed in cream fermented with free cells. Butter with a 44% reduction in cholesterol was produced from fermented cream by L. paracasei L2A21K5 entrapped in alginate beads. No significant (p > 0.05) changes in the fatty acid profile were observed in the low-cholesterol butter, except for a slight but significant increase in n-3 fatty acids (p < 0.05). In addition, the indices of atherogenicity and thrombogenicity were significantly reduced in the low-cholesterol butter (p < 0.05). Panelists rated the low-cholesterol butter as good in appearance, consistency, and flavor.
Numerous studies have been conducted to prove the calming and stress-reducing effects on humans of visiting aquatic environments. As a result, many institutions have utilized fish to provide ...entertainment and treat patients. The most common issue in this approach is controlling the movement of fish to facilitate human interaction. This study proposed an interactive robot, a robotic fish, to alter fish swarm behaviors by performing an effective, unobstructed, yet necessary, defined set of actions to enhance human interaction. The approach incorporated a minimalistic but futuristic physical design of the robotic fish with cameras and infrared (IR) sensors, and developed a fish-detecting and swarm pattern-recognizing algorithm. The fish-detecting algorithm was implemented using background subtraction and moving average algorithms with an accuracy of 78%, while the swarm pattern detection implemented with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) resulted in a 77.32% accuracy rate. By effectively controlling the behavior and swimming patterns of fish through the smooth movements of the robotic fish, we evaluated the success through repeated trials. Feedback from a randomly selected unbiased group of subjects revealed that the robotic fish improved human interaction with fish by using the proposed set of maneuvers and behavior.
