BACKGROUNDAmerican cutaneous leishmaniasis is a commonly neglected, vector-borne tropical parasitic disease that is a major public health concern in Brazil. Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the ...main species associated with the disease. Accurate diagnosis is based on epidemiological surveillance, clinical assessment, and laboratory testing. Leishmania (V.) braziliensis has been detected in several wild and synanthropic mammals. Their epidemiological role has not been entirely elucidated. This study aimed to assess potential L. braziliensis infections in asymptomatic domestic animals, by molecular and serological testing in endemic areas, in the metropolitan region of Recife. METHODSBlood samples and conjunctival fluids were collected from 232 animals (canids, felids, equines, and caprines) for the detection of L. braziliensis using molecular tests (conventional and real-time polymerase chain reaction PCR and qPCR). For immunological detection, blood samples from 115 dogs were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTSReal-time quantitative PCR showed positive results for blood and conjunctival samples in all investigated species. The results of the blood and conjunctival samples were 68.2% and 26.9% in Canis familiaris, 100% and 41.7% in Felis catus, 77.3% and 30.8% in Equus caballus/Equus asinus, and 50% and 33.3% in Capra hircus samples, respectively. CONCLUSIONSResults from this study adds valuable information to our understanding of the role of asymptomatic domestic animals, L. braziliensis life cycle, and American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northeast Brazil.
There are some reports and case series addressing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections during pregnancy in upper income countries, but there are few data on pregnant women with comorbid ...conditions in low and middle income Countries. This study evaluated the proportion and the maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection among pregnant women with comorbidities. Participants were recruited consecutively in order of admission to a maternity for pregnant women with comorbidities. Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory data were prospectively collected during hospitalization. Pregnant women were screened at entry: nasopharyngeal swabs were tested by RT-PCR; serum samples were tested for IgG antibodies against spike protein by ELISA. From April to June 2020, 115 eligible women were included in the study. The proportion of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 28.7%. The rate of obesity was 60.9%, vascular hypertension 40.0%, and HIV 21.7%. The most common clinical presentations were ageusia (21.2%), anosmia (18.2%), and fever (18.2%). Prematurity was higher among mothers who had a SARS-CoV-2 infection based on RT-PCR. There were two cases of fetal demise. We found a high proportion of COVID-19 among pregnant women with comorbidities. This underscores the importance of antenatal care during the pandemic to implement universal SARS-CoV-2 screening, precautionary measures, and the rollout of vaccination programs for pregnant women.

Fertilization management is essential for forage production. However, excessive use of synthetic fertilizers causes environmental imbalances. An alternative to reduce these effects is to seek ...alternative fertilizers, such as wood ash produced from agro-industrial waste, when integrated with appropriate base saturation management. This study aims to compare the effects of fertilization with wood ash (WA), organomineral (OM), and mineral (M) fertilizers associated with different levels of base saturation on the growth and water productivity of Panicum maximum cv. BRS Zuri. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of three types of fertilization (WA, OM and M) and three levels of base saturation (0, 25%, and 50%). Leaf area, chlorophyll index, shoot dry mass and root dry mass, water consumption, and water productivity of Zuri grass were evaluated. The results showed significant increases in leaf area, with values of up to 4564.5 cm2.pot−1 and a chlorophyll index of up to 36.2 units. In addition, the dry mass of the aerial part reached up to 46.7 g.pot−1, and the dry mass of the roots reached 21.7 g.pot−1 with the use of OM fertilizers. These values represent an increase of between 43.1% and 69.6% compared to the values of conventional fertilizers. In addition, water productivity reached 4.9 g.L−1 with WA-based fertilizers, an increase of around 39% compared to the values of mineral fertilizers.
The aim of this work was to study the physicochemical characterization of lipid matrices composed of cetyl palmitate (CP)/perillyl alcohol (PA) and develop preliminary studies of SLN for potential ...application in cancer treatment. The pre-formulation was submitted to recrystallization process (heating–cooling) in a concentration of CP/AP (F1 1:0; F2 1:9; F3 1:3; and F4 1:1). The characterization showed TG presents a single stage of thermal decomposition for AP, F1, F2 and F3 and two stages for F4. DSC decrease of the onset temperature of CP before and after thermal decomposition in all samples indicates a reduction in crystallinity, and WAXD data confirmed DSC results, showing a reduction in the intensity of main diffraction peaks of the lipid mixtures and a presence of the amorphous portion in 2
θ
angles of 21.51° and 23.62°. Results showed the binary mixtures presented a amorphous portion facilitates AP incorporation in SLN satisfactory size, polydispersity index, zeta potential and morphology was obtained.
This study aimed to investigate factors associated with unspecified and ill-defined causes of death in the State of Amazonas (AM), Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study on 90,439 non-fetal deaths ...of residents in AM from 2006 to 2012. The hierarchical multinomial logistic model estimated odds ratios of unspecified and ill-defined causes of death. Ill-defined and unspecified causes of death proportional mortality was, respectively, 16.6% and 9.1%. Ill-defined causes showed a decreasing trend over the years, while unspecified causes only decreased in the last two years. Unspecified causes of death were associated with residence and death outside the capital, public roads, female gender, age group 10-49 years, brown skin color and when certified by forensic doctors. Ill-defined causes of death were associated with residence and occurrence outside capital, at home, ages 40 years and older, non-whites, not being single, low schooling, under medical care and when examiner was unknown. Ill-defined and unspecified cause mortality in the State of Amazonas decreased between 2006 and 2012 in AM and was associated with space and time, demographic and socioeconomic factors and medical care at the moment of death.
Abstract
Background
Malaria is endemic and represents an important public health issue in Brazil. Knowledge of risk factors for disease progression represents an important step in preventing and ...controlling malaria-related complications. Reports of severe forms of
Plasmodium vivax
malaria are now becoming a common place, but respiratory complications are described in less than 3% of global literature on severe vivax malaria.
Case presentation
A severe respiratory case of imported vivax malaria in a previously healthy 40-year-old woman has been reported. The patient died after the fifth day of treatment with chloroquine and primaquine due to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Conclusions
Respiratory symptoms started 48 h after the initiation of anti-malarial drugs, raising the hypothesis that the drugs may have been involved in the genesis of the complication. The concept that vivax malaria is a benign disease that can sometimes result in the development of serious complications must be disseminated. This report highlights, once more, the crucial importance of malaria early diagnosis, a true challenge in non-endemic areas, where health personnel are not familiar with the disease and do not consider its diagnosis promptly.
In this work, titanate nanotubes (TiTNs) were obtained from titanium dioxide (TiO2–ABR) polymorphic phases (Anatase = A, Brookite = B, and Rutile = R) via alkaline hydrothermal method, aiming ...photocatalytic application. The synthesized materials were analyzed structurally and morphologically. According to X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD) pattern, the TiO2–ABR was composed of Anatase (41.16 ± 0.67%), Brookite (31.19 ± 0.58%), and Rutile (27.66 ± 0.43%). Furthermore, XRD results displayed the formation of TiTNs with a plane at 9.58° (200). TiTNs presented an average outer diameter of 14.2 nm, inner diameter, and interlamellar of 3.9 nm and 0.72 nm, respectively. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis suggested a relevant increase in the surface area by approximately 60% compared to the TiO2–ABR precursor, TiTNs also showed an estimated band gap of 3.47 eV. Photocatalytic activity of TiTNs in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye under Ultraviolet-Visible (UV–Vis) light irradiation was evaluated, showing that 90% of the dye was degraded after 2 h of exposure, where the superoxide radicals are the main radicals in the oxidation of RhB molecules. Thus, the synthesized material presented shows promising properties and high stability for photocatalytic application.
