Results: We found correlations between the presence of p-IκBα, a surrogate marker of NF-κB activation, and changes in the expression
profile (mRNA and protein expression) and clinical outcome in a series of CLL cases with lymph node involvement. Activation
of NF-κB, as determined by the expression of p-IκBα, was associated with the expression of a set of genes comprising key genes
involved in the control of B-cell receptor signaling, signal transduction, and apoptosis, including SYK , LYN , BCL2 , CCR7 , BTK , PIK3CD , and others. Cases with increased expression of p-IκBα showed longer overall survival than cases with lower expression. A
Cox regression model was derived to estimate some parameters of prognostic interest: IgV H mutational status, ZAP-70, and p-IκBα expression. The multivariate analysis disclosed p-IκBα and ZAP-70 expression as independent
prognostic factors of survival.
Conclusions: A variable degree of activation of NF-κB, as determined by the expression of p-IκBα, is an identifiable event in CLL, and
is correlated with changes in the expression profile and overall survival.

Abstract Objectives Competency to consent to hospitalization has important clinical and ethical implications. However, there are no follow-up studies that evaluate improvement in competency during ...psychiatric hospitalization. The authors sought to determine whether patients admitted to a psychiatric ward as incompetent to consent to hospitalization improve their competency during hospitalization. Method A total of 160 consecutively admitted patients were administered the Competency Questionnaire (CQ), a structured scale designed to assess competency to consent to psychiatric hospitalization. The CQ was administered both upon admission and at discharge. Severity and acuity of the psychiatric disorder were assessed with the Severity of Psychiatric Illness Scale and the Acuity of Psychiatric Illness Scale. Results Of the 160 assessed patients, 70 (43.8%) were rated incompetent. Forty-five of these 70 incompetent patients completed the admission-to-discharge follow-up. Twenty-one of these 45 patients (46.6%) remained incompetent at discharge. Participation in the treatment process was the only variable that predicted improvement on competency during hospitalization. Severity of psychiatric illness at admission did not predict improvement on competency. Conclusions Nearly half of the patients who upon admission were incompetent remained incompetent at discharge.

PURPOSE OF REVIEWWe review the relevant literature published in the last year on assessing the capacity of mental patients to make decisions in different areas of their lives. We have analyzed the ...research relating to the development of capacity assessment instruments.
RECENT FINDINGSWe examine recent studies focusing on the capacity of mental patients with mild to moderate dementia. Also we investigate how brief interventions affect patientsʼ understanding of the implications of being enrolled in a particular research project. A new area of research has emerged in the field trying to elucidate which neuropsychological and clinical factors can help to predict present or future incapacity. There is still debate on the construct validity of capacity since different theoretical approaches can be used.
SUMMARYUnfortunately there is controversy regarding the utility of neuropsychological and clinical data as predictors of incapacity. It is still necessary, therefore, to use different capacity instruments to ascertain whether patients have sufficient capacity for a specific task or decision.

This multicentre, observational, prospective, nonrandomized study compared the effectiveness and tolerability of quetiapine and risperidone in the acute and long-term treatment of schizophrenia in a ...clinical setting. Patients admitted to an acute unit with schizophrenia, schizophreniform or schizoaffective disorder (DSM-IV), who were prescribed quetiapine or risperidone (3 : 1 ratio) within the first week of treatment, according to the physicianʼs usual practice, were recruited. In total, 492 patients (quetiapine367; risperidone125) were followed up at weeks 1 and 2, discharge and 6 and 12 months thereafter. Mean doses at 12 months werequetiapine 718.5 mg/day and risperidone 7.0 mg/day. Efficacy measures (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Clinical Global Impression Severity of Illness and Improvement) indicated similar results for both agents. No difference was found in rehospitalization rate with either drug. In terms of tolerability, orthostatic hypotension was more frequent with quetiapine, but extrapyramidal symptoms and male sexual dysfunction were more frequent with risperidone. In conclusion, quetiapine and risperidone had comparable effectiveness, but there were differences between treatments in their side effect profile.
Residents of urban areas stay around 80% of their time in indoor spaces, where air quality has a relevant influence on health and job performance; specifically, CO 2 is recognized as an indicator ...pollutant of indoor air quality, and a good ventilation. The pursuit of excellence in indoor environments, with conditions that satisfy the occupants, and reduce the symptoms of diseases related to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), has promoted research on the use of plants as biological filters to purify the air. The CO 2 capture capacity by Sansevieria trifasciata, in a controlled system through a sealed chamber, was evaluated in this research. S. trifasciata plants were acquired from their natural environment in a rural area and transplanted into plastic plant pots. Total plant leaf area was calculated fortnightly for six months using image overlay, whose processing and digitalization was made with the AutoCAD® program, version 3.4.0.4. The CO 2 absorption, temperature and humidity were tested within the test chamber. With the data set obtained from the area and perimeter of the leaves, it was possible to determine the percentage of relative growth throughout the time sampled, obtaining a variation in the leaf area of 7.39% and 3.11% for the perimeter. A reduction of the initial concentration of CO 2 within the sealed chamber was achieved, in up to 24.4% using S. trifasciata, during six hours at artificial light conditions of approximately 500 lux.

Se repasan los problemas de la validez, la eficacia, la efectividad y la eficiencia, bajo la hipótesis de la catalogación de la psicoterapia psicoanalítica como una de las prestaciones a financiar ...por el sistema público de aseguramiento de la asistencia sanitaria. Se concluye que, en cualquier escenario asistencial futuro, los proveedores de técnicas psicoterapéuticas habrán de tender a definir las clásicas cuestiones de acreditación, indicación y evaluación con una metodología homologable a la que rige en otros ámbitos de lo sanitario.
