Extracellular vesicles (EVs), a class of heterogeneous membrane vesicles, are generally divided into exosomes and microvesicles on basis of their origination from the endosomal membrane or the plasma ...membrane, respectively. EV-mediated bidirectional communication among various cell types supports cancer cell growth and metastasis. EVs derived from different cell types and status have been shown to have distinct RNA profiles, comprising messenger RNAs and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Recently, ncRNAs have attracted great interests in the field of EV-RNA research, and growing numbers of ncRNAs ranging from microRNAs to long ncRNAs have been investigated to reveal their specific functions and underlying mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment and premetastatic niches. Emerging evidence has indicated that EV-RNAs are essential functional cargoes in modulating hallmarks of cancers and in reciprocal crosstalk within tumor cells and between tumor and stromal cells over short and long distance, thereby regulating the initiation, development and progression of cancers. In this review, we discuss current findings regarding EV biogenesis, release and interaction with target cells as well as EV-RNA sorting, and highlight biological roles and molecular mechanisms of EV-ncRNAs in cancer biology.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer, with a high recurrence rate and metastasis capacity. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been suggested to act as the critical regulator ...in several diseases. This study is designed to investigate the role of circCSNK1G3 on RCC progression. We observed a highly expression of circCSNK1G3 in RCC tissues compared with normal tissues. The aberrantly circCSNK1G3 promoted the tumour growth and metastasis in RCC. In the subsequent mechanism investigation, we discovered that the tumour‐promoting effects of circCSNK1G3 were, at least partly, achieved by up‐regulating miR‐181b. Increased miR‐181b inhibits several tumour suppressor gene, including CYLD, LATS2, NDRG2 and TIMP3. Furthermore, the decreased TIMP3 leads to the enhanced epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) process, thus promoting the cancer metastasis. In conclusion, we identified the oncogenic role of circCSNK1G3 in RCC progression and demonstrated the regulatory role of circCSNK1G3 induced miR‐181b expression, which leads to TIMP3‐mediated EMT process, thus resulting in tumour growth and metastasis in RCC. This study reveals the promise of circCSNK1G3 to be developed as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in the clinic. And the roles of circCSNK1G3 in cancer research deserve further investigation.
Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, is characterized with malignant cell growth. Advances in next-generation sequencing has helped us further understand RNA and identify novel ...circular RNAs (circRNAs) that may be useful in the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Similar to other noncoding RNAs, circRNAs present diverse biological functions in normal and disease states, including various types of cancers. This review focuses mainly on the poorly understood functions of circRNA in lung cancer. This paper also summarizes the recent advances in circRNA biogenesis, analyzes the role of circRNAs in cancers, and discusses the potential mechanisms of circRNAs in lung cancer.

The luminescent properties of a family of lanthanide metal–organic frameworks LnL (Ln=Y, La–Yb, except Pm; L=4,4′‐({2‐(4‐carboxyphenoxy)methyl‐2‐methylpropane‐1,3‐diyl}bis{oxy})dibenzoic acid) have ...been explored, and the energy‐transfer process in the compounds has been carefully analyzed. The visible‐emitting Tb0.08Gd0.92L and the near‐infrared (NIR)‐luminescent Yb0.10Gd0.90L show excellent optical performances and can be considered as fluorescent probes for acetone sensing based on luminescence quenching effects arising from host–guest interactions. Moreover, GdL exhibits a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) signal 6.1 times that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and an outstanding phase‐matchable effect. These lanthanide compounds combining fluorescent and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties could meet further requirements as multifunctional materials.

ABCC multidrug resistance-associated proteins (ABCCs/MRPs), a subfamily of ABC transporters, are involved in multiple physiological processes. Although these proteins have been characterized in some ...plants, limited efforts have been made to address their possible roles in Rehmannia glutinosa, a medicinal plant. Here, we scanned R. glutinosa transcriptome sequences and identified 18 RgABCC genes by in silico analysis. Sequence alignment revealed that the RgABCCs were closely phylogenetically related and highly conserved with other plant ABCCs/MRPs. Subcellular localization revealed that most of the RgABCCs were deposited in vacuoles and a few in plasma membranes. Tissue-specific expression of the RgABCCs indicated significant specific accumulation patterns, implicating their roles in the respective tissues. Differential temporal expression patterns of the RgABCCs exhibited their potential roles during root development. Various abiotic stress and hormone treatment experiments indicated that some RgABCCs could be transcriptionally regulated in roots. Furthermore, the transcription of several RgABCCs in roots was strongly activated by cadmium (Cd), suggesting possible roles under heavy metal stresses. Functional analysis of RgABCC1 heterologous expression revealed that it may increase the tolerance to Cd in yeast, implying its Cd transport activity. Our study provides a detailed inventory and molecular characterization of the RgABCCs and valuable information for exploring their functions in R. glutinosa.
As populations age, cancer burden becomes increasingly conspicuous. This study quantified the cancer burden of the elderly (≥ 60 years) in China, based on the China Cancer Registry Annual Report to ...provide epidemiological evidence for cancer prevention and control.
Data on cancer cases and deaths among the elderly aged ≥ 60 years were collected from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report, 2008-2019. Potential years of life lost (PYLL) and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) were calculated to analyze fatalities and the non-fatal burden. The time trend was analyzed using the Joinpoint model.
From 2005 to 2016, the PYLL rate of cancer in the elderly was stable between 45.34‰ and 47.62‰, but the DALY rate for cancer decreased at an average annual rate of 1.18% (95% CI: 0.84-1.52%). The non-fatal cancer burden in the rural elderly was higher than that of the urban elderly. Lung, gastric, liver, esophageal, and colorectal cancers were the main cancers causing the cancer burden in the elderly, and accounted for 74.3% of DALYs. The DALY rate of lung cancer in females in the 60-64 age group increased (annual percentage change APC = 1.14%, 95% CI: 0.10-1.82%). Female breast cancer was one of the top five cancers in the 60-64 age group, with DALY rates that also increased (APC = 2.17%, 95% CI: 1.35-3.01%). With increasing age, the burden of liver cancer decreased, while that of colorectal cancer rose.
From 2005 to 2016, the cancer burden in the elderly in China decreased, mainly reflected in the non-fatal burden. Female breast and liver cancer were a more serious burden in the younger elderly, while colorectal cancer burden was mainly observed in the older elderly.

We conducted a prospective study of patients who underwent a radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer between August 2014 and June 2019. Muscle strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer. Computed tomography images at the third lumbar vertebra level were used to assess muscle quantity and quality by the measuring cross-sectional muscle area and mean muscle attenuation, respectively. Probable sarcopenia was defined by low muscle strength. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by additional low muscle quantity or quality. Clinical outcomes were obtained by prospective data collection and follow up.
Probable sarcopenia was identified in 419 patients, including 285 patients with sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia had a higher incidence of postoperative complications, higher costs, longer length of postoperative hospital stay, and worse overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) compared with patients with low muscle strength only. The multivariate logistic analysis showed that sarcopenia and hypoproteinemia were independent risk factors for postoperative complications in patients with probable sarcopenia. Moreover, multivariate Cox analyses showed that sarcopenia remained an independent risk factor for OS and DFS in patients with probable sarcopenia.
The measurement of muscle quantity/quality has additional predictive value for postoperative complications, OS, and DFS after gastrectomy for gastric cancer in patients with probable sarcopenia.

Multi-level studies have shown that
(RHO) and Caffeine (CAF) have the potential to be nutritional supplements to enhance physical performance in resistance exercise-untrained and -trained subjects. ...This study examined the synergistic effects of RHO (262.7 mg/kg for rats and 2.4 g for volunteers) and CAF (19.7 mg/kg for rats and 3 mg/kg for volunteers) supplementation on improving physical performance in rats, resistance exercise-untrained volunteers and resistance exercise-trained volunteers. Rats and volunteers were randomly grouped into placebo, CAF, RHO and CAF+RHO and administered accordingly with the nutrients during the training procedure, and pre- and post-measures were collected. We found that RHO+CAF was effective in improving forelimb grip strength (13.75%), erythropoietin (23.85%), dopamine (12.65%) and oxygen consumption rate (9.29%) in the rat model. Furthermore, the current results also indicated that the combination of RHO+CAF significantly increased the bench press one-repetition maximum (1RM) (16.59%), deep squat 1RM (15.75%), maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) (14.72%) and maximum repetitions of 60% 1RM bench press (22.15%) in resistance exercise-untrained volunteers. Additionally, despite the excellent base level of the resistance exercise-trained volunteers, their deep squat 1RM and MVIC increased substantially through the synergistic effect of RHO and CAF. In conclusion, combined supplementation of RHO+CAF is more beneficial in improving the resistance exercise performance for both resistance exercise-untrained and -trained volunteers. The present results provide practical evidence that the synergies of RHO and CAF could serve as potential supplementary for individuals, especially resistance exercise-trained subjects, to ameliorate their physical performances effectively and safely.
