Recycling and valorisation of waste in urban centres in low- and middle-income countries is often misunderstood. Recycling in these countries represents neither the service of removal, nor an ...activity of “greening” related to ecological modernisation. Recycling is first of all an economic activity of commodities extraction, upgrading, and trading, and as such it provides a livelihood for millions of persons worldwide. Based on evidence of waste management and recycling activities in six urban centres in low- and middle-income countries, this paper explores the contribution of informal sector recycling to recycling and solid waste management. It interprets the variety of urban recycling systems as “modernised mixtures”: the mixing of formal municipal waste removal systems with informal private sector recycling activities. Context-dependent factors determine how this mixture of formal and informal systems looks, and how effective informal recycling in these urban centres is. This approach to analysing existing recycling can contribute to improvement of solid waste management systems through sustainable and fair recycling.
We present the first observation of K^{-} and ϕ absorption within nuclear matter by means of π^{-}-induced reactions on C and W targets at an incident beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c studied with HADES ...at SIS18/GSI. The double ratio (K^{-}/K^{+})_{W}/(K^{-}/K^{+})_{C} is found to be 0.319±0.009(stat)_{-0.012}^{+0.014}(syst) indicating a larger absorption of K^{-} in heavier targets as compared to lighter ones. The measured ϕ/K^{-} ratios in π^{-}+C and π^{-}+W reactions within the HADES acceptance are found to be equal to 0.55±0.04(stat)_{-0.07}^{+0.06}(syst) and to 0.63±0.06(stat)_{-0.11}^{+0.11}(syst), respectively. The similar ratios measured in the two different reactions demonstrate for the first time experimentally that the dynamics of the ϕ meson in nuclear medium is strongly coupled to the K^{-} dynamics. The large difference in the ϕ production off C and W nuclei is discussed in terms of a strong ϕN in-medium coupling. These results are relevant for the description of heavy-ion collisions and the structure of neutron stars.

In a study aimed at the chemical characterization of constituents of the ventral gland secretion of the male dwarf hamster, Phodopus sungorus sungorus, 48 compounds, including saturated alcohols, ...saturated and unsaturated ketones, saturated and unsaturated straight-chain carboxylic acids, iso- and anteisocarboxylic acids, 3-phenylpropanoic acid, hydroxyesters, 2-piperidone, and some steroids were identified in the secretion. The position of the double bonds in gamma-icosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone and gamma-henicosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone, and the position of methylbranching in seven C16-C21 saturated ketones could not be established. Several constituents with typically steroidal mass spectra also remained unidentified. The female dwarf hamster's ventral gland either does not produce secretion or produced so little secretion that it was impossible to collect enough material for analysis.
Opioids cause spasm of the sphincter of Oddi. Remifentanil is metabolized enzymatically throughout the body. Its context-sensitive half-time is 3-4 min. The effect of remifentanil on the sphincter of ...Oddi, is unknown. We studied, in six healthy adult volunteers, the effect of remifentanil on the flow of dye from the gall bladder into the duodenum. Control hepatobiliary imaging with 5 mCi of technetium-labeled derivatives of iminodiacetic acid was performed on each volunteer. The time from IV dye (radiopharmaceutical) injection until its appearance in the duodenum was determined by continuous scanning. Two weeks later, each volunteer received remifentanil, 0.1 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1) infused for 30 min IV before the same dose of technetium-labeled derivatives of iminodiacetic acid was injected, and for the time of their control scan plus 10 min after the injection. When the dye appeared in the duodenum, the total time from injection was compared with the control value. The time from stopping the infusion until the dye appeared in the duodenum was the "recovery time." Control scan time was 20.5+/-9.9 min (mean +/- SD; range 10-33 min). Total scan time during and after the remifentanil infusion was 50.3+/-17.3 min (range 30-81 min) (P < 0002). The recovery time was 19.8+/-12.4 min (range 5-40 min). We conclude that remifentanil delays the drainage of dye from the gall bladder into the duodenum, but the delay is shorter than that reported after other studied opioids.
Radioactive dye was injected IV into healthy volunteers to determine the time it took for the dye to appear in the duodenum. This was repeated under the influence of a short-acting narcotic analgesic, remifentanil. Remifentanil caused a much shorter delay than previously reported after morphine or meperidine.
Rain data are collected all over the world because water is of paramount importance to all human life. WMO has provided standards for collection and standardized data processing of daily rainfall ...measurements. Currently no such standards are available for gauges with a resolution suitable for urban hydrology, where the resolution in time must not exceed a few minutes. The Group on Urban Rainfall under the International Water Association has made a comparison of national standards by means of a survey of 77 questions sent to 44 countries. The paper discusses the first results of the answers of the survey. Currently tipping bucket gauges are the dominating method of obtaining high resolution rain data, but the numbers of weighing gauges and radar measurements are rapidly growing. It is necessary to try to increase the awareness of documentation of current standards and to agree on standards for measurements and data processing on an international level in the future.

. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Afterwards the expected signal count rates using a target consisting of either liquid hydrogen or polyethylene are summarized.
Abstract The production of $$\Sigma ^{0}$$ Σ 0 hyperons in proton proton collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5 GeV impinging on a liquid hydrogen target was investigated using data collected ...with the HADES setup. The total production cross section is found to be $${\sigma (pK^{+}\Sigma ^{0}) = 17.7 \pm 1.7 (stat) \pm 1.6 (syst)}$$ σ ( p K + Σ 0 ) = 17.7 ± 1.7 ( s t a t ) ± 1.6 ( s y s t ) µb. Differential cross section distributions of the exclusive channel $${pp \rightarrow pK^{+}\Sigma ^{0}}$$ p p → p K + Σ 0 were analyzed in the center-of-mass, Gottfried–Jackson and helicity reference frames for the first time at the excess energy of 556 MeV. The data support the interplay between pion and kaon exchange mechanisms and clearly demonstrate the contribution of interfering nucleon resonances decaying to $$\textrm{K}^{+}\Sigma ^{0}$$ K + Σ 0 . The Bonn–Gatchina partial wave analysis was employed to analyse the data. Due to the limited statistics, it was not possible to obtain an unambiguous determination of the relative contribution of intermediate nucleon resonances to the final state. However nucleon resonances with masses around 1.710 $${\textrm{GeV}/\textrm{c}^{2}}$$ GeV / c 2 ( $${\textrm{N}^{*}(1710)}$$ N ∗ ( 1710 ) ) and 1.900 $${\textrm{GeV}/\textrm{c}^{2}}$$ GeV / c 2 ( $${\textrm{N}^{*}(1900)}$$ N ∗ ( 1900 ) or $${\Delta ^{*}(1900)}$$ Δ ∗ ( 1900 ) ) are preferred by the fit.

, measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions allow the ...determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources via a comparison to models. The emission source, parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, is studied in dependence on pair transverse momentum, azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, collision centrality and beam energy. For all centralities and transverse momenta, a geometrical distribution of ellipsoidal shape is found in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction with the larger extension perpendicular to the reaction plane. For large transverse momenta, the corresponding eccentricity approaches the initial eccentricity. The eccentricity is smallest for most central collisions, where the shape is almost circular. The magnitude of the tilt angle of the emission ellipsoid in the reaction plane decreases with increasing centrality and increasing transverse momentum. All source radii increase with centrality, largely exhibiting a linear rise with the cube root of the number of participants. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, appearing most pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters are consistent with the extrapolation of their energy dependence down from higher energies.
