This article is based on a combination of anthropological and geographic approaches to seascape as an aspect of the cultural landscape. Following McCall Howard, Wickham-Jones, Ingold, and Arnason, we ...understand the term seascape as a “holistic term to describe the depth and complexity of human relations with the sea, the modes of human habitation of the sea, the importance of the sea to maintaining livelihoods, and the connections between land and sea.” We analyze the cartographic materials chronologically from the Franziscean Cadaster to present day and determine how the use of the Canal of St. Bartholomew has changed through time. Once a part of saltpans, providing salt water for salt production and a transport route, it is now a scenic place for leisure and a protected area. As a part of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, the canal was poorly managed and is now a liminal site of nonregulated berths for pleasure vessels. For these reasons, this contested seascape is represented as “Texas,” an ecological disgrace, and a boat cemetery. This area is used for many contested activities, which at the same time contribute to environmental vulnerabilities and the destruction of natural and cultural heritage.
In this turbulent world, different people live highly mobile lives and some seem to be living on the move. On the other hand, there are people known as Gypsies, Travellers, Gens du Voyage or Roma, ...imagined as nomads, although their mobility has been highly controlled or restricted by repressive regimes, nation-states and local communities of Europe throughout history. Following the "mobility turn" or the "new mobilities paradigm" in social studies and based on ethnographic records of travelling Roma who visited Slovenia as "tourists", I will look at studies of mobilities of Roma. The intention of this paper is first to shed light on the juridical categories of nomad within a certain historical context. Second, within the new mobilities paradigm, and with reference to the immobile platforms that make mobility possible, I will look at the provision of Travellers' sites that paradoxically make some Travellers less mobile or even sedentarized. This paper explores ethnic, cultural and symbolic boundaries in a micro-region within the Mediterranean area of Istria, which is conceptualised as a multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual ...region. In scholarly writings and everyday speech, it is seen as a border zone where people construct multiple pure and hybrid identities. In this paper, I intend to explore some of the geographic, historical, political, and anthropological discourses that are present in the fieldwork location of Istria and North East Adriatic Sea as well as address the issue of national land and maritime borders and ethnic boundaries. I will focus on the border issues in the periods of political and ideological changes after World War II and after 1991, in the wake of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the creation of Slovenia and Croatia as new post-socialist states. Particular focus will be on the issue of international arbitrage on the maritime and land border in 2017.
The present article presents the reader the Path of Factories or tells the reader/visitor the story left behind the former economic activity of the fish processing industry, operating from the last ...quarter of the 19th century to the present day. The path tells the story, which is still preserved today among Isolans, lives on and represents the memory about six factory plants in the city of Izola/Isola, which are placed all along the the way from the west to the eastern bay of the town. The two extremes of the route coincide with the primary economic activity of the city of Izola/Isola, processing small „blue“ fish.
Avtorica v prispevku predstavi širok pogled na različne oblike nasilja in vrste zlorab, ki kaže, da to ni le individualni, temveč tudi družbeni problem. Razišče tudi pristope, ki jih uporabljajo ...raziskovalci različnih ved, vključno z antropologijo in sociologijo, in poudari, da so pogosto najbolj produktivni interdisciplinarni pristopi, saj zajemajo širok nabor idej o nasilju in zlorabi in o njunem učinku na družbo kot celoto. Nadalje razišče kompleksnost vzrokov in učinkov nasilja in sklene z mislijo, da smo nasilja sposobni vsi in da se lahko kadarkoli zgodi vsakomur od nas. Zato je izjemnega pomena, da tisti, ki želijo pomagati žrtvam zlorab, ne dajejo sodb ter da se zavedajo vpliva zlorabe na posameznike in na skupnosti, v katerih ti posamezniki živijo.
A transfer of knowledge concerning aspects of ethnic or racial domination against Roma people is described. The author's participation in demonstrations and her efforts to transfer the informed ...knowledge about Roma people in public in Slovenia, are analyzed. Many scientists of culture and society of Roma people were more or less involved in contesting, and engaged in discussions on the stereotipization of Roma people. Different definitions of public activities are given, which are known in anthropology as public anthropology. They deal with transfer of anthropological knowledge to the general public. Critical studies of Roma people are then briefly presented. The author's own anthropological engagement in the case of the Strojan family is analysed. The central thesis of this article is that efforts to transfer the informed knowledge of studies examining various aspects of Roma life, is essential, being the only way to prevent the operation of mechanisms of racial domination.
