ABSTRACT We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Cycle 1 to determine spectroscopic redshifts of high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected by their 1.4 mm ...continuum emission in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. We present ALMA 3 mm spectral scans between 84 and 114 GHz for 15 galaxies and targeted ALMA 1 mm observations for an additional eight sources. Our observations yield 30 new line detections from CO, C i, N ii, H2O and NH3. We further present Atacama Pathfinder Experiment C ii and CO mid-J observations for seven sources for which only a single line was detected in spectral-scan data from ALMA Cycle 0 or Cycle 1. We combine the new observations with previously published and new millimeter/submillimeter line and photometric data of the SPT-selected DSFGs to study their redshift distribution. The combined data yield 39 spectroscopic redshifts from molecular lines, a success rate of >85%. Our sample represents the largest data set of its kind today and has the highest spectroscopic completeness among all redshift surveys of high-z DSFGs. The median of the redshift distribution is z = 3.9 0.4, and the highest-redshift source in our sample is at z = 5.8. We discuss how the selection of our sources affects the redshift distribution, focusing on source brightness, selection wavelength, and strong gravitational lensing. We correct for the effect of gravitational lensing and find the redshift distribution for 1.4 mm selected sources with a median redshift of z = 3.1 0.3. Comparing to redshift distributions selected at shorter wavelengths from the literature, we show that selection wavelength affects the shape of the redshift distribution.
Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we conducted a survey of CO J = 1 − 0 and J = 2 − 1 line emission towards strongly lensed high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) previously ...discovered with the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Our sample comprises 17 sources that had CO-based spectroscopic redshifts obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. We detect all sources with known redshifts in either CO J = 1 − 0 or J = 2 − 1. 12 sources are detected in the 7-mm continuum. The derived CO luminosities imply gas masses in the range (0.5–11) × 1010 M⊙ and gas depletion time-scales t
dep < 200 Myr, using a CO to gas mass conversion factor αCO = 0.8 M⊙ (K km s−1 pc2)−1. Combining the CO luminosities and dust masses, along with a fixed gas-to-dust ratio, we derive αCO factors in the range 0.4–1.8 M⊙ (K km s−1 pc2)−1, similar to what is found in other starbursting systems. We find small scatter in αCO values within the sample, even though inherent variations in the spatial distribution of dust and gas in individual cases could bias the dust-based αCO estimates. We find that lensing magnification factors based on the CO linewidth to luminosity relation (μCO) are highly unreliable, but particularly when μ < 5. Finally, comparison of the gas and dynamical masses suggest that the average molecular gas fraction stays relatively constant at z = 2–5 in the SPT DSFG sample.
Objective To document the mortality and morbidity of infants weighing 501-1500 g at birth according to gestational age, birthweight, and sex. Study design Prospective collection of perinatal events ...and neonatal course to 120 days of life, discharge, or death from January 1990 through December 2002 for infants born at 16 participating centers of the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development Neonatal Research Network. Results Compared with 1995-1996, for 1997-2002 the survival of infants with birthweight of 501-1500 g increased by 1 percentage point (from 84% to 85%). Survival without major neonatal morbidity remained static, at 70%; this includes bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Survival increased for multiple births (26%, up from 22%), antenatal corticosteroid use (79%, up from 71%), and maternal antibiotics (70%, up from 62%) ( P < .05). From 1997 to 2002, birthweight-specific survival was 55% for infants weighing 501-750 g, 88% for 751-1000 g, 94% for 1001-1250 g, and 96% for 1251–1500 g. More females survived. The incidence of NEC (7%), severe IVH (12%), and late-onset septicemia (22%) remained essentially unchanged, but BPD decreased slightly, from 23% to 22%. The use of postnatal corticosteroids declined from 20% in 1997-2000 to 12% in 2001-2002. Growth failure (weight <10th percentile) at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age decreased from 97% in 1995-1996 to 91% in 1997-2002. Conclusion There have been no significant increases in survival without neonatal and long-term morbidity among VLBW infants between 1997 and 2002. We speculate that to improve survival without morbidity requires determining, disseminating, and applying best practices using therapies currently available, and also identifying new strategies and interventions.
Abstract Objective An analysis of EEG synchrony between homologous early visual areas tested the hypothesis that interhemispheric functional connectivity during visual stimulation is reduced in ...children with autism compared to controls. Methods EEG power and coherence within and between two homologous regions of the occipital cortex were measured during long latency flash visual evoked potentials. Measures were compared between two groups of children (5.5–8.5 years), one with autism spectrum disorders and the other with typical development. Results In and below the theta band, interhemispheric synchrony was reduced in autistic subjects compared to typical controls by as much as 50%. Above the theta band interhemispheric synchrony in autistic children became indistinguishable from what would occur for uncorrelated cortical activity. Interhemispheric synchrony in autistic subjects was decreased in spite of bilaterally increased power. Wavelet power showed autistic children had a more rapid initial response to stimulation, a slower recovery, and more modulation at longer latencies. Conclusions Results suggest that the sensory cortices of autistic children are hypersensitive to stimulation with concurrent diminished functional connectivity between hemispheres. Significance Simultaneously increased intrahemispheric power and decreased interhemispheric synchronization of elemental visual information suggests either that power increases cause poor interhemispheric connectivity or that processes, such as thalamocortical regulation, impact power and coherence independently.
The type I interferons (IFNs) are pleiotropic cytokines that regulate many different cellular functions. The major signaling pathway activated by type I IFNs involves sequential phosphorylation of ...the tyrosine residues of the Janus kinase (JAK) and signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins, providing the primary mechanism through which gene expression is induced. Recent work has shown that the responses are quite complex, as shown by different responses to specific subtypes of type I IFN, activation of kinases in addition to JAKs, patterns of activation of all seven STATs in different cells, and activation of transcription factors other than STATs. The type I IFNs use this complexity to regulate many different biological functions in different types of cells, by activating different specific signals and patterns of gene expression.
Vapour and particle-associated concentrations of 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and 11 PAH quinones have been measured in winter and summer campaigns at the rural site, Weybourne in ...eastern England. Concentrations of individual PAH are relatively smaller than average concentrations measured previously at urban sites in the UK. The concentrations of PAH of the air masses originating from southern England and mainland UK are significantly larger than those from Eastern Europe and the North Atlantic, while quinone to parent PAH ratios show an inverse behaviour, being highest in the more aged North Atlantic polar air masses. While concentrations of 1,2-naphthoquinone decline from winter to summer, those of 1,4-naphthoquinone and anthraquinone increase suggesting a photochemical formation pathway. A comparison of congener concentration profiles measured at Weybourne with those from an urban source area (Birmingham) reveals differential losses at the rural site, especially evident in fluoranthene : pyrene ratios and consistent with the known rates of vapour phase reactions of 3 and 4 ring compounds with hydroxyl radical. The ratios of quinones to their parent PAH at Weybourne are greater than those in the urban source area indicating either more rapid loss processes for PAH, or formation of quinones during advection of the air mass, or probably both.

A common first-line treatment for supporting cardiovascular function in preterm infants is volume expansion using saline, but this does not improve outcomes. This study aimed to determine if volume ...expansion with saline increases blood volume, blood pressure and cerebral oxygenation; and if volume expansion with packed red blood cells (RBC) is more effective. We hypothesized that RBC infusion is more effective than saline for increasing blood volume and maintaining cardiovascular function and cerebral oxygenation.
Five groups of preterm piglets (98/115d gestation) were infused with saline (10 or 20 mL/kg) or RBC (10 or 20 mL/kg) or no treatment. Blood volume, blood pressure, central venous pressure, heart rate, carotid flow, cerebral oxygenation, arterial pH, base excess, and lactate levels were assessed for 6 h after treatment started.
Both RBC groups had significant increases in blood volume, and improved measures of cardiovascular function, cerebral oxygenation and metabolic acidosis. Saline infusion did not increase blood volume or measures of cardiovascular function, cerebral oxygenation or metabolic acidosis.
The results suggest that the deteriorating cardiovascular function in the hours after birth in preterm piglets, and possibly in premature babies, may be reversed or halted by more effective support of blood volume.
Blood volume decreases after birth in preterm piglets and this decrease is associated with deteriorating cardiovascular function and cerebral oxygenation. Infusion of saline does not increase blood volume nor prevent deterioration in cardiovascular function. Infusion of packed red blood cells results in an increase in blood volume and improvements in cardiovascular function and cerebral oxygenation. Deteriorating cardiovascular function in the hours after birth in preterm piglets, and possibly in human preterm neonates, may be reversed or halted by more effective support of blood volume.
Return of fear is a serious problem in exposure-based treatments of anxiety disorders. Renewal of the fear response may occur when re-encountering the conditioned stimulus within a novel context. ...Findings in rodents underpin the hippocampus' role in conditioned fear renewal in novel contexts, but it has yet to be investigated in humans. Forty-six healthy men took part in a 2-day, context-dependent, cued fear conditioning paradigm with fear acquisition, extinction learning (day 1) and extinction recall in the acquisition, extinction and a novel context one day later. Conditioned evaluative, skin conductance responses (SCRs) and blood-oxygen-level-dependent responses served as dependent variables. Context-dependent fear renewal was reflected in stronger conditioned SCRs. In the acquisition context, individuals with a higher renewal of conditioned SCRs showed stronger activation of the fear circuit. Hippocampal activation distinguished conditioned responding in the novel compared with the extinction context. Individuals with a stronger renewal of conditioned SCRs in the novel context showed increased effective connectivity of hippocampal activation foci with structures in the fear and extinction network. These results outline the pivotal role of the hippocampus and its connectivity in conditioned fear renewal in a novel context in humans and might have important implications for exposure therapy in anxiety disorders.
We present Searches After Gravitational-waves Using ARizona Observatories (SAGUARO), a comprehensive effort dedicated to the discovery and characterization of optical counterparts to ...gravitational-wave (GW) events. SAGUARO utilizes ground-based facilities ranging from 1.5 to 10 m in diameter, located primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. We provide an overview of SAGUARO's telescopic resources, its pipeline for transient detection, and its database for candidate visualization. We describe SAGUARO's discovery component, which utilizes the 5 deg2 field of view optical imager on the Mt. Lemmon 1.5 m telescope, reaching limits of 21.3 AB mag while rapidly tiling large areas. We also describe the follow-up component of SAGUARO, used for rapid vetting and monitoring of optical candidates. With the onset of Advanced LIGO/Virgo's third observing run, we present results from the first three SAGUARO searches following the GW events S190408an, S190425z and S190426c, which serve as a valuable proof-of-concept of SAGUARO. We triggered and searched 15, 60, and 60 deg2 respectively, 17.6, 1.4, and 41.8 hr after the initial GW alerts. We covered 7.8%, 3.0%, and 5.1% of the total probability within the GW event localizations, reaching 3 limits of 19.8, 21.3, and 20.8 AB mag, respectively. Although no viable counterparts associated with these events were found, we recovered six known transients and ruled out five potential candidates. We also present Large Binocular Telescope spectroscopy of PS19eq/SN2019ebq, a promising kilonova candidate that was later determined to be a supernova. With the ability to tile large areas and conduct detailed follow-up, SAGUARO represents a significant addition to GW counterpart searches.
