Rapidly increasing development of nuclear power stimulates the exploration of low-cost and highly efficient materials to selectively remove uranium (VI) from contaminated wastewater streams. Herein, we successfully developed a novel hydroxyapatite (HAP) adsorbent by using a facile and template-free hydrothermal method. The XRD results demonstrated that the HAP was crystallized in hexagonal structure (space group P63/m(176)), and the images of SEM and TEM indicated that the HAP possessed hollow and hierarchical nanostructure. A large BET specific surface area (182.6 m2/g) and average pore size of 10.5 nm, suggested that the hierarchical hollow HAP microspheres could provide sufficient active sites for highly efficient removal of uranium from aqueous solutions, indicated the HAP might be a prompt emergency material for the remediation of nuclear leakage accident. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics model fitted well to sorption experimental data. The study was further advanced by FT-IR and XPS. The sorption mechanism was mainly attributed to surface chemisorption between U(VI) and HAP, forming a new U-containing compound, viz., autunite (Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2·3H2O).
The anti-inflammatory effects of salmeterol/fluticasone (SFP), tiotropium/fluticasone (Tio+FP) and tiotropium (Tio) alone were investigated on the inflammatory cells and mediators in sputum induced ...from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Subjects were either newly diagnosed or had not taken any medication for 3 months prior to the study. Subjects (n = 99) were randomised (not double blinded) and received either SFP (100/1,000 microg daily), Tio+FP (18/1,000 microg daily) or Tio (18 microg daily) for 12 weeks. Induced sputum and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) were analysed prior to and at the end of treatment. The results showed that treatment with SFP caused a significant reduction in interleukin (IL)-8 and matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-9 in induced sputum, compared with treatment with Tio alone. There were no treatment differences between the SFP and Tio+FP groups in decreasing IL-8 and MMP-9 levels. The reduction in IL-8 showed significant association with the reduction in MMP-9. All treatment groups failed to significantly reduce the numbers of total cells, neutrophils, macrophages and eosinophils in induced sputum; in addition, there were no treatment differences in terms of improvement of forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, CRP or quality of life between the three groups. The anti-inflammatory effects of salmeterol/fluticasone probably contribute to the clinical benefits seen in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
In 1995, the Hong Kong Diabetes Register (HKDR) was established by a doctor-nurse team at a university-affiliated, publicly funded, hospital-based diabetes center using a structured protocol for ...gathering data to stratify risk, triage care, empower patients, and individualize treatment. This research-driven quality improvement program has motivated the introduction of a territory-wide diabetes risk assessment and management program provided by 18 hospital-based diabetes centers since 2000. By linking the data-rich HKDR to the territory-wide electronic medical record, risk equations were developed and validated to predict clinical outcomes. In 2007, the HKDR protocol was digitalized to establish the web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program complete with risk levels and algorithms for issuance of personalized reports to reduce clinical inertia and empower self-management. Through this technologically assisted, integrated diabetes care program, we have generated big data to track secular trends, identify unmet needs, and verify interventions in a naturalistic environment. In 2009, the JADE Program was adapted to form the Risk Assessment and Management Program for Diabetes Mellitus (RAMP-DM) in the publicly funded primary care clinics, which reduced all major events by 30–60% in patients without complications. Meanwhile, a JADE-assisted assessment and empowerment program provided by a university-affiliated, self-funded, nurse-coordinated diabetes center, aimed at complementing medical care in the community, also reduced all major events by 30–50% in patients with different risk levels. By combining universal health coverage, public-private partnerships, and data-driven integrated care, the Hong Kong experience provides a possible solution than can be adapted elsewhere to make quality diabetes care accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
In today's society, displays are indispensable for digital interaction and personal contact. Therefore, the development of displays is an urgent need for the next generation. Leading the ...commercialization trends is the development of industrial, high-resolution, portable, and multifunctional displays. Moreover, for small-size portable displays, the most critical factor affecting future applications is their flexibility. Among the various materials that can act as the channel layer, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) is a potential candidate for next-generation portable displays, which require high resolution and stable reliability, and which can achieve virtual reality applications. This article is a review of the development of the LTPS thin-film transistors (TFTs) on soft and flexible electronics, especially the effect of mechanical strain. This article starts by providing an overview of the difficulties in fabricating LTPS TFTs on flexible substrates. The physical mechanism corresponding to each degradation caused by mechanical stress is presented next. Finally, to support the development of the flexible technologies and realize their commercialization, methods to overcome these mechanical strain-induced degradations are reported in three different aspects by understanding the physical degradation model.
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a rate-limiting enzyme in heme degradation, producing carbon monoxide (CO), which carries potent antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory effects in the vascular walls. ...Transcription of the HO-1 gene is regulated by the length polymorphism of dinucleotide guanosine thymine repeat (GT)n in the promoter region, which was measured in this study to determine its association with arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure in Chinese hemodialysis (HD) patients in Taiwan. L allele means (GT)n≥30 and S allele means (GT)n<30. Therefore, there are two L alleles for L/L genotype, one L and one S allele for L/S genotype, and two S alleles for S/S genotype. Among the 603 HD patients who were enrolled in this study, 178 patients had history of AVF failure, while 425 patients did not. Significant associations were found between AVF failure and the following factors (hazard ratio): longer HD duration (1.004 month), lower pump flow (0.993 ml/min), higher dynamic venous pressure (1.010 mmHg), location of AVF on the right side (1.587 vs left side) and upper arm (2.242 vs forearm), and L/L and L/S genotypes of HO-1 (2.040 vs S/S genotype). The proportion of AVF failure increased from 20.3% in S/S genotype and 31.0% in L/S genotype to 35.4% in L/L genotype (P=0.011). Relative incidences were 1/87.6 (1 episode per 87.6 patient-months), 1/129, and 1/224.9 for HD patients with L/L, L/S, and S/S genotypes, respectively (P<0.002). The unassisted patency of AVF at 5 years decreased significantly from 83.8% (124/148) to 75.1% (223/297) and 69% (109/158) in S/S, L/S, and L/L genotypes, respectively (P<0.0001). In comparison with HD patients with S/S genotype, those with L/L genotype had a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease (29.1 vs 14.2%; P=0.005). A longer length polymorphism with (GT)n ≥30 in the HO-1 gene was associated with a higher frequency of access failure and a poorer patency of AVF in HD patients. The longer GT repeat in the HO-1 promoter might inhibit gene transcription, and consequently offset the CO-mediated protective effect against vascular injury.
Sp1 is important for the transcription of many genes. Our previous studies have shown that Sp1 is degraded in normal cell, but it is preserved in cancer cells during mitosis and exists a priori in ...the daughter cells, ready to engage in gene transcription and thereby contributes to the proliferation and survival of cancer cells. The mechanism by which Sp1 is preserved in cancer cells during mitosis remains unknown. In this study, we observed that Sp1 strongly colocalized with cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1)/cyclin B1 during mitosis. Moreover, we showed that Sp1 is a novel mitotic substrate of CDK1/cyclin B1 and is phosphorylated by it at Thr 739 before the onset of mitosis. Phospho-Sp1 reduced its DNA-binding ability and facilitated the chromatin condensation process during mitosis. Mutation of Thr739 to alanine resulted in Sp1 remaining in the chromosomes, delayed cell-cycle progression, and eventually led to apoptosis. Screening of Sp1-associated proteins during mitosis by using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry indicated the tethering of Sp1 to myosin/F-actin. Furthermore, phospho-Sp1 and myosin/F-actin appeared to exist as a congregated ring at the periphery of the chromosome. However, at the end of mitosis and the beginning of interphase, Sp1 was dephosphorylated by PP2A and returned to the chromatin. These results indicate that cancer cells use CDK1 and PP2A to regulate the movement of Sp1 in and out of the chromosomes during cell-cycle progression, which may benefit cancer-cell proliferation.

. The possible redback origin of this system has been discussed by Pan et al. We discuss here an alternative evolution track for this binary system, namely that PSR J1953+1844 is a descendant of an ultracompact X-ray binary (UCXB), which has a hydrogen-poor donor accreting onto a neutron star (NS) with an orbital period of ≤1 hr. We noticed that some UCXB systems hold an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) and a donor with a mass of about 0.01

. M71E has a very similar orbit to those of AMXPs, indicating that it might be evolved from a UCXB similar to PSR J1653–0158. The companion star of M71E should be significantly bloated and it most probably has a carbon and oxygen composition, otherwise a low inclination angle of the orbit is required for a helium companion. The discovery of this M71E binary system may shed light on when and how an NS in a UCXB turns into a radio pulsar.

Summary
Background The diagnosis of gastro‐oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is based on reflux symptoms. Although metabolic syndrome has been linked to ...erosive oesophagitis (EO), the impact of insulin resistance, the core of the metabolic syndrome, on reflux symptoms remains to be elucidated.
Aim To assess the effects of insulin resistance on GERD, including both endoscopic findings and symptoms.
Methods A total of 743 sonographic noncirrhotic adult subjects, who underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination, completed a gastro‐oesophageal reflux questionnaire and had available fasting insulin data were included. Endoscopic findings were classified according to the Los Angeles classification. Homeostatic model assessment‐insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) index was used to evaluate the status of insulin resistance. Univariate and multivariate approaches were used to evaluate the associations between insulin resistance and GERD.
Results Older age, male gender, smoking and alcohol consumption increased the prevalence of EO, but not GERD symptoms. A large waist circumference, high fasting blood glucose levels and high number of metabolic syndrome components were associated with increased prevalence of both EO and GERD symptoms, while high blood pressure was associated with increased prevalence of EO only. Moreover, higher scores in the gastro‐oesophageal reflux questionnaire were associated with higher HOMA‐IR index, and higher HOMA‐IR index was associated with increased prevalence of EO (adjusted odds ratio 1.14, 95% CI 1.03–1.26, P = 0.012).
Conclusions Our findings demonstrate clear associations between insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and GERD. Whether reducing insulin resistance may improve GERD symptoms or EO deserves prospective study.
ZNF322A encoding a classical Cys2His2 zinc finger transcription factor was previously revealed as a potential oncogene in lung cancer patients. However, the oncogenic role of ZNF322A and its ...underlying mechanism in lung tumorigenesis remain elusive. Here we show ZNF322A protein overexpression in 123 Asian and 74 Caucasian lung cancer patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that ZNF322A was an independent risk factor for a poor outcome in lung cancer, corroborating the Kaplan-Meier results that patients with ZNF322A protein overexpression had significantly poorer overall survival than other patients. Overexpression of ZNF322A promoted cell proliferation and soft agar growth by prolonging cell cycle in S phase in multiple lung cell lines, including the immortalized lung cell BEAS-2B. In addition, ZNF322A overexpression enhanced cell migration and invasion, whereas knockdown of ZNF322A reduced cell growth, invasion and metastasis abilities in vitro and in vivo. Quantitative proteomic analysis revealed potential ZNF322A-regulated downstream targets, including alpha-adducin (ADD1), cyclin D1 (CCND1), and p53. Using luciferase promoter activity assay combined with site-directed mutagenesis and sequential chromatin immunoprecipitation-PCR assay, we found that ZNF322A could form a complex with c-Jun and cooperatively activate ADD1 and CCND1 but repress p53 gene transcription by recruiting differential chromatin modifiers, such as histone deacetylase 3, in an AP-1 element dependent manner. Reconstitution experiments indicated that CCND1 and p53 were important to ZNF322A-mediated promotion of cell proliferation, whereas ADD1 was necessary for ZNF322A-mediated cell migration and invasion. Our results provide compelling evidence that ZNF322A overexpression transcriptionally dysregulates genes involved in cell growth and motility therefore contributes to lung tumorigenesis and poor prognosis.
