Polymer nanocomposites possess promising high performances as engineering materials, if they are prepared and fabricated properly. Some work has been recently done on such polymer nanocomposites as ...dielectrics and electrical insulation. This was reviewed in 2004 based on the literatures published up to 2003. New significant findings have been added since then. Furthermore, a multi-core model with the far-distance effect, which is closely related to an "interaction zones", has been proposed from consideration of mesoscopic analysis of electrical and chemical structures of an existing interface with finite thickness. It is speculatively examined in the paper how the model works for various properties and phenomena already found in nanocomposites as dielectrics focusing on electrical characteristics, resistance to high voltage environment, and thermal properties.
We found that plasmonic Au particles on titanium(iv) oxide (TiO2) act as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for overall water splitting free from any additives. This is the first report showing ...that surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in a suspension system effectively induces overall water splitting. Modification with various types of metal nanoparticles as co-catalysts enhanced the evolution of H2 and O2. Among these, Ni-modified Au/TiO2 exhibited 5-times higher rates of H2 and O2 evolution than those of Ni-free Au/TiO2. We succeeded in designing a novel solar energy conversion system including three elemental technologies, charge separation with light harvest and an active site for O2 evolution (plasmonic Au particles), charge transfer from Au to the active site for H2 production (TiO2), and an active site for H2 production (Ni cocatalyst), by taking advantage of a technique for fabricating size-controlled Au and Ni nanoparticles. Water splitting occurred in aqueous suspensions of Ni-modified Au/TiO2 even under irradiation of light through an R-62 filter.
The efficacy of programmed death-1 blockade in epidermal growth factor receptor gene (EGFR) mutation-positive non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with different mechanisms of acquired ...resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is unknown. We retrospectively evaluated nivolumab efficacy and immune-related factors in such patients according to their status for the T790M resistance mutation of EGFR.
We identified 25 patients with EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC who were treated with nivolumab after disease progression during EGFR-TKI treatment (cohort A). Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density in tumor specimens obtained after acquisition of EGFR-TKI resistance were determined by immunohistochemistry. Whole-exome sequencing of tumor DNA was carried out to identify gene alterations. The relation of T790M status to PD-L1 expression or TIL density was also examined in an independent cohort of 60 patients (cohort B).
In cohort A, median progression-free survival (PFS) was 2.1 and 1.3months for T790M-negative and T790M-positive patients, respectively (P=0.099; hazard ratio of 0.48 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.20–1.24). Median PFS was 2.1 and 1.3months for patients with a PD-L1 expression level of≥1% or<1%, respectively (P=0.084; hazard ratio of 0.37, 95% confidence interval of 0.10–1.21). PFS tended to increase as the PD-L1 expression level increased with cutoff values of≥10% and≥50%. The proportion of tumors with a PD-L1 level of≥10% or≥50% was higher among T790M-negative patients than among T790M-positive patients of both cohorts A and B. Nivolumab responders had a significantly higher CD8+ TIL density and nonsynonymous mutation burden.
T790M-negative patients with EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC are more likely to benefit from nivolumab after EGFR-TKI treatment, possibly as a result of a higher PD-L1 expression level, than are T790M-positive patients.
We present a theory, based on statistical mechanics, to evaluate analytically the performance of uncoded, fully synchronous, randomly spread code-division multiple-access (CDMA) multiuser detectors ...with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, under perfect power control, and in the large-system limit. Application of the replica method, a tool developed in the literature of statistical mechanics, allows us to derive analytical expressions for the bit-error rate, as well as the multiuser efficiency, of the individually optimum (IO) and jointly optimum (JO) multiuser detectors over the whole range of noise levels. The information-theoretic capacity of the randomly spread CDMA channel and the performance of decorrelating and linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detectors are also derived in the same replica formulation, thereby demonstrating validity of the statistical-mechanical approach.

d increases, suggesting the use of smaller particles to provide a more uniform tissue distribution. However, discoidal particles have been observed to accumulate more than others in most of the organs but the liver, where cylindrical particles are deposited at a larger extent. These preliminary results support the notion of using sub-micrometer discoidal particles as intravascular carriers to maximize accumulation in the target organ whilst reducing sequestration by the liver.

Convection is the most fundamental process in understanding the structure of geospace and disturbances observed in the magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) system. In this paper, a self-consistent ...configuration of the global convection system is considered under the real topology as a compound system. Investigations are made based on the M-I coupling scheme by analyzing numerical results obtained from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations which guarantee the self-consistency in the whole system under the Bv (magnetic field and velocity) paradigm. It is emphasized in the M-I coupling scheme that convection and field-aligned current (FAC) are different aspects of same physical process characterizing the open magnetosphere. Special attention is given in this paper to the energy supplying (dynamo) process that drives the FAC system. In the convection system, the dynamo must be constructed from shear motion together with plasma population regimes to steadily drive the convection. Convection patterns observed in the ionosphere are also the manifestation of achievement in global self-consistency. A primary approach to apply these concepts to the study of geospace is to consider how the M-I system adjusts the relative motion between the compressible magnetosphere and the incompressible ionosphere when responding to given solar-wind conditions. The above principle is also applicable for the study of disturbance phenomena such as the substorm as well as for the study of apparently unique processes such as the flux transfer event (FTE), the sudden commencement (SC), and the theta aurora. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the substorm as the extension of enhanced convection under the southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) condition.
Precise comparisons of the fundamental properties of matter-antimatter conjugates provide sensitive tests of charge-parity-time (CPT) invariance, which is an important symmetry that rests on basic ...assumptions of the standard model of particle physics. Experiments on mesons, leptons and baryons have compared different properties of matter-antimatter conjugates with fractional uncertainties at the parts-per-billion level or better. One specific quantity, however, has so far only been known to a fractional uncertainty at the parts-per-million level: the magnetic moment of the antiproton, . The extraordinary difficulty in measuring with high precision is caused by its intrinsic smallness; for example, it is 660 times smaller than the magnetic moment of the positron. Here we report a high-precision measurement of in units of the nuclear magneton μ
with a fractional precision of 1.5 parts per billion (68% confidence level). We use a two-particle spectroscopy method in an advanced cryogenic multi-Penning trap system. Our result = -2.7928473441(42)μ
(where the number in parentheses represents the 68% confidence interval on the last digits of the value) improves the precision of the previous best measurement by a factor of approximately 350. The measured value is consistent with the proton magnetic moment, μ

To examine this possibility, we performed an epigenome-wide association study of methylation of cytosine-phosphate-guanine dinucleotide (CpG) sites in relation to alcohol intake in 13 population-based cohorts (n
=13 317; 54% women; mean age across cohorts 42-76 years) using whole blood (9643 European and 2423 African ancestries) or monocyte-derived DNA (588 European, 263 African and 400 Hispanic ancestry) samples. We performed meta-analysis and variable selection in whole-blood samples of people of European ancestry (n=6926) and identified 144 CpGs that provided substantial discrimination (area under the curve=0.90-0.99) for current heavy alcohol intake (⩾42 g per day in men and ⩾28 g per day in women) in four replication cohorts. The ancestry-stratified meta-analysis in whole blood identified 328 (9643 European ancestry samples) and 165 (2423 African ancestry samples) alcohol-related CpGs at Bonferroni-adjusted P<1 × 10
. Analysis of the monocyte-derived DNA (n=1251) identified 62 alcohol-related CpGs at P<1 × 10

In whole-blood samples of people of European ancestry, we detected differential methylation in two neurotransmitter receptor genes, the γ-Aminobutyric acid-A receptor delta and γ-aminobutyric acid B receptor subunit 1; their differential methylation was associated with expression levels of a number of genes involved in immune function. In conclusion, we have identified a robust alcohol-related DNA methylation signature and shown the potential utility of DNA methylation as a clinically useful diagnostic test to detect current heavy alcohol consumption.
Prediction of crop yield and quality is an essential component of successful implementation of precision agriculture. Given the recent commercialization of low-cost multispectral cameras mounted on ...unmanned aerial vehicles and advances in machine learning techniques, prediction systems for crop characteristics can be more precisely developed using machine learning techniques. Therefore, the model performances for predicting wheat grain yield and protein content between the machine learning algorithms based on spectral reflectance and plant height (e.g. random forest and artificial neural network) and the traditional linear regression based on vegetation indices were compared. Although the machine learning approaches based on reflectance could not improve the grain yield prediction accuracy, they have great potential for development in predicting protein content. The linear regression model based on a 2-band enhanced vegetation index was capable of predicting the yield with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 972 kg ha
−1
. The random forest model based on reflectance was capable of predicting the protein content with an RMSE of 1.07%. The reflectance may have been linearly correlated with total biomass; thus, it was also linearly correlated with grain yield. There was a nonlinear relationship between the grain yield and protein content, which may have resulted in the higher model performance of the machine learning approaches in predicting protein content. However, this relationship would be variable according to the environment and agronomic practice. Further, field-scale research is required to assess how this relationship can be varied and affect the model generality, particularly when predicting protein content.
