In the ‘Dialogue’ column, Slovenian poet Boris A. Novak talks with the titan of the Slovene intellectual and cultural scene, Taras Kermauner, on a whole set of issues including the cultural and ...political enterprise of former Yugoslavia, ideological conflicts on its political and cultural sphere, the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the emerging new, post-socialist states.
Literature and the theatre remain in the focus of Kermauner’s reflections, together with some intimate accounts of his own relationships with his family and, last but not least, dialectical shifts in his experience of God.
The production of cultural values is a manifold process. The basic division, however, exists between a production which satisfies new needs, visions, & opens new relationships, & one which grows from ...the demands of those defending the existing system. The old elite thus produces already known values & is constantly repressing & indoctrinating 'the misbehaved.' With the process of the destalinization of Yugoslav society, a more 'liberal' culture was taking root. At the present, a pluralism of different cultural productions may be observed. Several conflicts in the sphere of culture are identified: (1) the conflict between reactionaries who seek the old, Stalinist ways & the new pluralist conceptions; (2) nationalism is another source of potential conflicts, although less important in Slovenia at the present; (3) the most important conflict arises from basic disagreements about value standards that should be applied in evaluating literary & other artistic productions. On the one side we have the traditionalists, & on the other the 'avant-garde' which again is split into 2 poles: one which corresponds to the functionalism of the modern industrial system, & one which argues for the human needs for freedom, spontaneity & fantasy. Peter Jambrek.
