A fresh approach for leaders to achieve meaningful and impactful change For many leaders, achieving success in their diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) has been challenging. A Harvard ...Business Review study featured in March 2023 showed a stark disconnect: while 97% of HR leaders respondents said that they were making great improvements and strides in their DEIB programs, only 37% of employee respondents felt that those efforts improved DEI. To learn more and to see real-world examples of how companies have used innovation principles in their own DEIB efforts, read Innovating for Diversity: Lessons from Top Companies Achieving Business Success through Inclusivity.
Devoting oneself to volunteerism and community service can be one of the most rewarding experiences that women in technical careers can have. Their contribution can just be simple, deliberate actions ...that they can take through the course of a day. One of the good ways to give back is to find interests that women in technical careers are passionate about and find out how they can contribute. Sites like VolunteerMatch offer no shortage of opportunities that help different communities and allow the tech to utilize a variety of skills. Another way is to make a direct money donation, if the resources permit. The chapter presents a few examples of other ways of giving back such as sharing information on jobs, free classes, and professional events; helping friends with their resume, with interviewing, or with another project they are working on; donating old gadgets; and using portals to donate to charitable organizations.
There is almost no industry or domain that has not been impacted and revolutionized by tech, and all of them need tech professionals, like, yesterday. This chapter explains the technologies that are poised to impact the way that we work in the future—and perhaps even sooner than we think. An emerging technology is one that exists but we have yet to ...fully use or experience its true potential. Many research organizations and studies have pointed out that the adoption and improvement of emerging technologies will cause structural unemployment, or people losing their jobs because their skills have become out of date. The chapter discusses artificial intelligence (AI), augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, blockchain, cloud computing, Internet of Things, and 3D Printing. AI is the ability of computers or programs to think and learn like a human being would. People may use the terms AI, machine learning, and deep learning as synonyms for each other. But each term has a specific definition and can be considered different subsets of one another.

Women in technical careers can do a skills gap analysis by comparing their skills to the current job market. While there are free courses, events, training programs, and certifications available, women in technical careers may need to pay for many of these opportunities. The chapter reviews a few ways the tech can go about this such as applying for loans and scholarships or obtaining tuition reimbursement.
This chapter discusses the many ways women in technical careers can document their skill depth and experience, ranging from traditional means like resume, online platforms like LinkedIn, and other ...more creative means, like writing, public speaking, or building personal website. Book Chapter
Aside from family and friends, a technical professional's network can comprise coworkers, mentors, sponsors, professors, teachers, coaches, counselors, and loved ones. In the traditional ...interpretation, mentoring describes a relationship between a less experienced person and a more experienced person, with the goal of sharing knowledge, expertise, and personal/professional growth for both parties, not just the mentee. Mentoring requires a tremendous amount of effort and energy, from both the mentor and the mentee. A mentor can provide advice and general guidance. A sponsor can provide those things as well but can be seen more as career champion. Social anxiety is the fear of any type of interaction with other people. People who have social anxiety are concerned—or downright worried—that they will be looked upon negatively by other people.
