The colonial roots of the global news system have received relatively limited academic scrutiny, especially from a global South perspective. This article discusses the colonial nature of global news ...media by examining how the US-UK "news duopoly" has deep colonial connections: the news agency Reuters was described as "an empire within the British empire". It then examines the 1970s debates during the Cold War within UNESCO for a New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), the demand to redress the imbalances in global media systems and flow of news between the West and its erstwhile colonies championed by what was then called the Third World. The article then argues that, in the post-Cold War world of globalized communication, a new kind of neo-colonialism in news media emerged, as Western-owned satellite and cable networks extended their footprints across the world, supplemented by the digital empires of the new millennium.
The explosion of transnational information flows, made possible by new technologies and institutional changes (economic, political and legal) has profoundly affected the study of global media. At the ...same time, the globalization of media combined with the globalization of higher education means that the research and teaching of the subject faces immediate and profound challenges, not only as the subject of enquiry but also as the means by which researchers and students undertake their studies.

Among BRICS nations, India has the most developed and globalised film industry, and the Indian government as well as corporations are increasingly deploying the power of Bollywood in their ...international interactions. India's soft power, arising from its cultural and civilizational influence outside its territorial boundaries, has a long history. Focusing on contemporary India's thriving Hindi film industry, this article suggests that the globalisation of the country's popular cinema, aided by a large diaspora, has created possibilities of promoting India's public diplomacy. It examines the global imprint of this cinema as an instrument of soft power.
The MacBride Commission Report was arguably one of the most significant multilateral interventions in the history of international communication. This article charts its emergence at the time of ...deeply contested Cold War politics, coinciding with the rise of the southern voices in the global arena, led by the non-aligned nations. Thirty-five years after the report's publication, has the global media evolved into a more democratic system, demonstrating greater diversity of views and viewpoints? Despite the still formidable power of US-led western media, the article suggests that the globalisation and digitisation of communication has contributed to a multi-layered and more complex global media scene, demonstrating the "rise of the rest".
The media world has changed profoundly in the past two decades, reflecting the cumulative impact of liberalization, privatization and deregulation of the media and communication sector, together with ...the digitization of content, enabling global and instantaneous circulation of cultural products from across the continents. Nevertheless, the imbalance in the flow of media products -- from the media-rich North (and within it a US-UK core) to the South -- continues to define global communication. Yet in an era of multi-vocal, multi-layered and multi-directional flows, the traditional domination of western, or specifically American, media is diminishing, and, more importantly and arguably, being challenged. With robust annual economic growth over the past decade, India is increasingly viewed internationally as an emerging economic and political power. On the basis of purchasing-power parity, it was the fourth largest economy in 2011 behind Japan, China and the US. With this economic growth has come a stream of foreign direct investment in various sectors of the Indian economy, including media and communication, which have demonstrated impressive growth in recent decades. India has become an important source of media products, both nationally produced as well as a production base for transnational -- largely US-based -- media conglomerates, including for Disney and News Corporation. Such corporate synergies have been made possible partly because of a closer economic and strategic relationship between the US and India. In the media and cultural sphere, this has led to greater visibility globally of Indian cultural products, from Bollywood cinema to Bhangra music. Auckland: Little Island Press in association with the Pacific Media ...Centre. 2014, 362 pp. ISBN 978-1877484-25-4Most journalists work to earn a decent living. Some join the profession to rub shoulders with the rich and famous, benefitting from close proximity to the powers that be. David Robie, the doyen of journalism in the South Pacific region, has pursued a different type of journalism, as this book attests. An exceptional individual, apart from being an award-winning journalist, a prolific author and a committed journalism educator, Robie has set new standards of journalism practice and politics in a part of the globe which receives scant coverage in the international media. During the early 1990s, as associate editor of the London-based and now defunct Gemini News Service, a ‘Third World-oriented’ news features service, this reviewer had the privilege to work with Robie, who regularly contributed thoughtful, well-researched but never preachy articles and commentaries from the South Pacific region, which were circulated among the agency’s more than 100 newspapers around the world.

The creation of a global market has not only contributed to the globalisation of Western and, more specifi cally, American media around the world, but also opened up the media and communication ...sectors in large and hitherto highly regulated countries such as China and India. The resultant flow of media products from such countries has created more complex global information, infotainment and entertainment spheres. This article examines the increasing importance of China and India in global communication and media discourses and the challenge that the rise of "Chindia" poses for the study of media and communication. It argues that the globalisation of media industries and audiences, combined with the internationalisation of higher education - reflected in the changing profile of both faculty and students - requires a new approach for research and the teaching of media and communication. While global media and their study remain firmly embedded in a Western or, more accurately, American discourse, the new realities of the post-2008 world warrant a re-evaluation of how we define the global. The article concludes by considering what "Chindia" might mean in a de-Americanised media world.
Global media magnate Rupert Murdoch has been a key player in the exponential growth of the Indian television market, attracted by the large and increasingly affluent urban middle classes. The success ...of his Star network in India reflects marketdriven strategies, which include the skilful localization of content. This article examines the case of Star News as exemplifying the trend in television news towards infotainment in the context of a more general ‘Murdochization’ of the media in India. It then goes on to analyse its impact on the quality of public discourse in television news. This, the article argues, has implications for the role of the media in a developing country where one-third of the population is illiterate.
