Callicarpa candicans (Burm. f.) Hochr. (Callicarpa cana L.) is a medicinal plant that is distributed mainly in the tropics and subtropics of Asia and finds a wide range of uses in traditional ...medicine. In this study, we attempted and optimized the microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD) process to obtain essential oil from the leaves of C. candicans. In addition, the obtained oil was analyzed for volatile composition by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and assayed for bioactivity against several bacteria and cancer cell lines. To optimize the extraction process, response surface methodology (RSM) in combination with central composite design (CCD) was adopted. Experimental design and optimization were carried out with respect to three experimental factors including the ratio of water to raw material, extraction time, and microwave power. The optimal extraction conditions were obtained as follows: water to raw material ratio of 6/1 (v/w), extraction time 42 min, and microwave power 440 W. Composition determination of the obtained C. candicans essential oil indicated the presence of predominant components including caryophyllene (10.45%), cadinene (10.28%), gurjunene (8.95%), muurolene (8.92%), selinene (7.06%), selinene (5.59%), and copaene (5.40%). In comparison with the essential oils obtained via traditional hydro-distillation method, the essential oil extracted by MAHD exhibited superior anti-proliferative activity on all tested cancer cell lines. Current results imply that the MAHD is capable of recovering biologically-active natural products of greater quantity than that recovered by the conventional distillation.
Dendritic cells (DC) are professional antigen-presenting cells that activate T cells to kill cancer cells. The extracellular products of DCs have also been reported to perform the same function. In ...this study, we examined the in vitro differentiation of umbilical cord blood monocytes into DCs in the presence of GM-CSF, and interferon (IFN)-α. The resulting DC population (called IFN-DCs) were then matured in the presence of TNF-α, and pulsed with total protein extracted from A549 cancer cell line. The pulsed DCs and their conditioned medium were then used to stimulate allogeneic lymphocytes (alloLym). The proliferation and cytotoxicity of alloLym were then determined. The results showed that after 5 days of differentiation, the stimulated monocytes had the typical morphology and characteristic surface markers of DCs. Both unpulsed and pulsed IFN-DCs can induce the proliferation of alloLym, especially Vγ9γδ T cells. The conditioned medium from pulsed and unpulsed IFN-DCs culture also prompted the growth of Vγ9γδ T cells. Moreover, alloLym stimulated with pulsed DCs and their conditioned medium had a greater cytotoxic effect on A549 cells than the ones that were not stimulated. Our results indicated that IFN-DCs and their conditioned medium could induce the anti-tumor immunity in vitro, providing evidence for application of cord blood monocytes-derived, interferon-α- stimulated dendritic cells and their extracellular products in anti-cancer therapy.
This study examines the association between corporate attributes and human resource accounting disclosures of non-financial companies listed on the Vietnam Stock Exchange. Data were obtained from the ...annual reports of 80 selected companies for the period 2016-2018. Content analysis was also applied to analyze the extent of human resource disclosures. To determine the level of voluntary disclosures of Vietnamese listed companies, the human resource disclosure index consisting of 32 items was developed. For hypothesis testing, we used panel regression, employing techniques like the pooled-ordinary least squares, fixed effects model, and random effects model to analyze the data. The findings reveal a significant positive relationship among firm size, foreign ownership, and human resource accounting disclosures. However, other variables, including listing age, leverage, and profitability, exhibit no relationship with human resource accounting disclosures. In addition, based on the content analysis results, it can be concluded that human resource accounting disclosures by Vietnamese listed companies are quite low, and there is room for improvement. The study contributes to the limited research on this field in Vietnam. Moreover, the disclosure index constructed in this study may be utilized by local companies as a benchmark to enhance their human resource disclosures in the future.
Polymer-based micro-optical components are very important for applications in optical communication. In this study, we theoretically investigated the coupling of polymeric waveguide and microring ...structures and experimentally demonstrated an efficient fabrication method to realize these structures on demand. First, the structures were designed and simulated using the FDTD method. The optical mode and loss in the coupling structures were calculated, thereby giving the optimal distance for optical mode coupling between two rib waveguide structures or for optical mode coupling in a microring resonance structure. Simulations results then guided us in the fabrication of the desired ring resonance microstructures using a robust and flexible direct laser writing technique. The entire optical system was thus designed and manufactured on a flat base plate so that it could be easily integrated in optical circuits.

Proteoglycan (PG) is a type of glycoprotein which forms an extracellular matrix with collagen and hyaluronic acid to maintain articular cartilage, synovial membrane, and synovial fluid. This study ...aimed to evaluate the antiosteoarthritis effects of salmon nasal cartilage-derived PG in alleviating knee osteoarthritis in an osteoarthritis rat model. Knee osteoarthritis was induced in rats by intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA), 3 mg/knee, to the right knee. Animals were then administered either diclofenac (3 mg/kg body weight b.w/day) or proteoglycan F (PGF; 40 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg b.w/day) by oral gavage for 6 consecutive weeks. Knee diameters were measured throughout the experimental period; serum interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels, and histological analysis of the ligament were carried out at the end of the experiment. Salmon cartilage PG considerably alleviated the osteoarthritis symptoms in the model and lowered the serum concentrations of interleukin-1β and TNF-α. Diclofenac 3 mg/kg/day and PGF at doses of 40 mg/kg/day and 120 mg/kg/day also improved articular cartilage structure on further histological studies. This study demonstrated the in vivo effect of salmon cartilage PG in attenuating symptoms in an MIA-induced rat model, including reduction of inflammatory markers and histological improvement of cartilage tissue.
