In a study aimed at identifying the items carrying information regarding the global severity of depression, the 6-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D6) was derived from the original 17-item ...version of the scale (HAM-D17). Since then, the HAM-D6 has been used in a wide range of clinical studies. We now provide a systematic review of the clinimetric properties of HAM-D6 in comparison with those of HAM-D17 and the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).
We conducted a systematic search of the literature in PubMed, PsycInfo, and EMBASE databases in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. Studies reporting data on the clinimetric validity of the HAM-D6 and either the HAM-D17 or MADRS in non-psychotic unipolar or bipolar depression were included in the synthesis.
The search identified 681 unique records, of which 51 articles met the inclusion criteria. According to the published literature, HAM-D6 has proven to be superior to both HAM-D17 and MADRS in terms of scalability (each item contains unique information regarding syndrome severity), transferability (scalability is constant over time and irrespective of sex, age, and depressive subtypes), and responsiveness (sensitivity to change in severity during treatment).
According to the published literature, the clinimetric properties of HAM-D6 are superior to those of both the HAM-D17 and MADRS. Since the validity of HAM-D6 has been demonstrated in both research and clinical practice, using the scale more consistently would facilitate translation of results from one setting to the other.

We used data from two previously published studies in which the patients had a MINI Neuropsychiatric Interview verified diagnosis of DSM-IV major depression. The conventional VAS scores for no, mild, moderate, and severe depression were used for the standardization of the MDI.
The inter-correlation for the MDI with the clinician ratings (VAS, MES, HAM-D17 and HAM-D6) increased over the rating weeks in terms of Pearson coefficients. After nine weeks of therapy the coefficient ranged from 0.74 to 0.83. Using the clinician-rated VAS depression severity scale, the conventional MDI cut-off scores for no or doubtful depression, and for mild, moderate and severe depression were confirmed.
Using the VAS as index of external, clinical validity, the standardization of the MDI as a measure of depression severity was accepted, with an MDI cut-off score of 21 for mild depression, 26 for moderate depression severity, and 31 for severe depression.

Introduction More than 80 % of patients experiencing their first depressive episode will have at least one new episode. Effective interventions to reduce the risk of relapse and recurrence are ...needed. Psychoeducation is a form of interactive education enhancing knowledge about patients’ illness, including its course, symptoms and treatment. Psychoeducational methods can also act as family intervention – already an evidence-based practice in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Only few studies have focused on the effect of psychoeducation, including family psychoeducation, in the prevention of new depressive episodes. Purpose Purpose is to evaluate whether an intervention of psychoeducation for family members, compared to a control intervention, is effective in reducing the risk of new depressive episodes among patients that have achieved remission or partial remission of depressive symptoms after the acute phase of antidepressive treatment. Method The project is based on a double-centre, randomized controlled trial where investigator and raters conducting psychometric assessments, will be blinded to treatment allocation. A total of 130 patients with unipolar depression in remission or partial remission will be included together with their closest relative. After baseline assessments, relatives will be randomized to either 4 sessions of a family psychoeducation program or 4 sessions in a social support group without any psychoeducational intervention. Patients will not participate in group sessions and they will continue their outpatient-treatment as usual. Outcome Primary outcome is evaluated after 9 months and include rates of relapse as measured by HAM-D17 and rates of recurrence according to DMS-VI-R and HAM-D17.
