The paper traces a three-century-long tradition of a mistaken attribution of the Defence of Eunuchs by Theophylact of Ohrid. Since Peter Lambeck, chief librarian of the Hofbibliothek in Vienna, ...identified in 1671 the author of the treatise as Theodore Pedagogue, a poorly known tutor to the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, the incorrect attribution was readily adopted and further disseminated by a series of scholars of the next generations. Although the issue of the authorship was successfully resolved as early as 1768 by Angelo Bandini, head of the Laurentian Library in Florence, the information remained unfamiliar to writers of the following centuries, leaving the entrenched error to persist until the late 1970s, on the eve of the first critical editions of the Defence (Gautier 1980, Spadaro 1981). The article follows the tangled history of the erroneous attribution, attempting to establish a kind of stemmatic regularity between several branches of the abortive tradition.
Standard versions of blood separators typically use medium-price color sensors for a detection of a boundary level between red blood cells and plasma, at the last gate – at hose clamps. Discrete ...number of sensors is related to a number of significant levels to be detected thus making blood separation potentially faulty and unreliable. Our target was to make flexible, low cost replacement for level detection system that can be easily integrated into the existing product. We came up with an image processing solution that uses USB web-camera, ARM based off-the-shelf board – BeagleBone black and free OpenCV library. Flexibility is held in much higher, selectable number of levels, freely positioned USB camera and brand-free independent processing platform, as well as semi-automatic calibration system. By adding minimum additional electronics, we managed to integrate our solution into existing Blood processing machine. In conclusion, we added a new value to the machine at lower cost in production, increasing measurement frequency and resolution needed for improvement of blood separation process. Next step is to try to use two USB cameras on a custom-made board, for simultaneous level detection on two-channel blood separator, bringing the system integration to the higher level.
Bearing in mind that every element of the linguistic system can be subordinated to the communicative function of language, the authors of this paper seek to provide a contrastive structural and ...semantic analysis of a particular lexico-semantic group of somatic idioms or phraseologisms (phraseological units containing the names of bodily organs) found in the Modern Greek and Serbian languages. This brief analysis, based on a corpus gathered from dictionaries and translated books, is a pioneer work in its field either in Greek or in Serbian literature on phraseology. Since somatic phraseologisms diverge in their structure and semantic features, the authors attempt to find parallels between the two languages in their use of concrete concept forms, with the ultimate aim of explaining and expressing their metaphorical meanings. This entails focusing on a selection of somatic phraseologisms which belong to separate phraseological inventories of the two languages.

When in 1976 the new Serbian translation of Petronius’ Satyricon by Radmila Šalabalić (1927-2011) came to light, it marked a turning point in the practices of our translators of classical authors. By ...taking an entirely new stylistic direction, basically oriented to the works and authors of the satirical and realistic genres of classical literature, Prof. Šalabalić made a decisive impact on the younger generation of translators. The distinctive feature of this new poetics is primarily associated with the entirely original and innovative use of the Serbian language and its different literary and colloquial variants and local idioms as the most powerful stylistic device for conveying parodistic and humorous potential of the original text. Regarding the narrative of the Latin prototype as historically conditioned, deeply idiosyncratic and thus ‘alienated’ from the contemporary reader, i.e. incomprehensible in many ways (different civilization, different habits, different national and historical mentalities etc.), Radmila Šalabalić succeeds in applying the Serbian linguistic element of the translation as an effective means of text ‘de-alienation’, thus bringing the reader closer to the realistic, satirical and parodistic aspects of the meaning inherent in the original.
The first part of this paper analyzes a text by Theophylact of Ohrid known as In Defense of Eunuchs. In terms of its genre and topic, this work stands alone in Byzantine literature. Through a ...dialogue between the two interlocutors – a monk and a eunuch, Theophylact challenges the traditional representation of eunuchs. He particularly focuses on the condemnation of castration in Ecclesiastical Canons and secular legislation (of the late Roman Empire and Byzantium). Theophylact highlights the ambivalence of the views on eunuchs in Byzantine society, demonstrating that castration as such did not necessarily lead to the marginalization of the castrated individual. The most important part of Theophylact’s Defense offers a comparison between “the bearded” and eunuchs in monastic orders. Also, the affirmation of freedom of choice between good and evil and insisting that an individual should be judged according to his own deeds is the guiding idea of Theophylact’s Defense. The second part of the paper contains a Serbian translation of Theophylact’s text with a commentary. Besides the French translation by the editor of the critical edition P. Gautier, this is the second complete translation of the Greek original. It deviates from Gautier’s version in several places, offering alternative readings of ambiguous places.

This paper presents a mechatronics setup based on a reaction wheel inverted pendulum (RWIP). The novelty of this setup is the use of visual feedback (VF) to control a RWIP while the use of a low-cost ...camera to achieve control was the main motivating factor. The physical parameters that affect the bandwidth were identified from a mathematical model. In turn, relationships between the system bandwidth and the frames per second (FPS), image resolution, static and dynamic position accuracy and velocity estimation accuracy were then developed. These relationships were tested on the physical setup after a thorough parameter estimation exercise and the FPS and resolution that matched best the mechanical bandwidth were selected. Control parameters were optimized on the simulation model and transferred to the real physical system. A good level of control was achieved both during swing-up and stabilization at the inverted position. The development of the relationship between the limitations of the VF sensor and the mechanical parameters which influence the bandwidth is the main contribution of this paper. The total cost of the hardware was kept low by using off-the-shelf parts.
