Excessive antimicrobial usage and deficiencies in hygiene in meat production systems may result in undesirable human health hazards, such as the presence of antimicrobial drug residues and ...non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS), including antimicrobial resistant (AMR) NTS. Recently, Vietnam has witnessed the emergence of integrated intensive animal production systems, coexisting with more traditional, locally-sourced wet markets. To date no systematic studies have been carried out to compare health hazards in beef, pork and chicken in different production systems. We aimed to: (1) estimate the prevalence of antimicrobial residues in beef, pork and chicken meat; (2) investigate the prevalence and levels of NTS contamination; and (3) investigate serovar distribution and AMR against critically important antimicrobials by animal species and type of retail (wet market vs. supermarket) in Vietnam. Fresh pork, beef and chicken meat samples (N=357) sourced from wet markets and supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Hanoi and Dong Thap were screened for antimicrobial residues by PremiTest, and were further investigated by Charm II. Samples from HCMC (N=113) were cultured using ISO 6579:2002/Amd 1:2007. NTS bacteria were quantified using a minimum probable number (MPN) technique. NTS isolates were assigned to serovar by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST), and were investigated for their phenotypic susceptibility against 32 antimicrobials. A total of 26 (7.3%) samples tested positive by PremiTest (9.5% beef, 4.1% pork and 8.4% chicken meat). Sulfonamides, tetracyclines and macrolides were detected by Charm in 3.1%, 2.8% and 2.0% samples, respectively. Overall, meat samples from wet markets had a higher prevalence of residues than those from supermarkets (9.6% vs. 2.6%) (p=0.016). NTS were isolated from 68.4% samples from HCMC. Chicken samples from wet markets had by far the highest NTS counts (median 3.2 logMPN/g). NTS isolates displayed high levels of resistance against quinolones (52.2%) and β-lactams (49.6%), but low levels against 3rd generation cephalosporins (4.4%) and aminoglycosides (0.8%). The highest adjusted prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) corresponded to isolates from chicken meat and pork (OR 8.3 and 1.8, respectively) (baseline=beef). S. Kentucky was the most common serovar identified (11 from chicken, 1 from beef) and 91.7% isolates was MDR. 11/12 isolates corresponded to ST198, a worldwide-disseminated multi-resistant NTS clone. We recommend stepping up policy measures to promote responsible antimicrobial use in animal production, as well as awareness about withdrawal periods to limit the hazard of residues in animal products, and improving slaughtering/hygiene procedures to limit cross-contamination with NTS, particularly in poultry wet markets.
•Antimicrobial residues were found in 7.3% meat samples (9.6% in meat from wet markets and 2.6% in meat from supermarkets).•Over two thirds (68.4%) of meat samples were contaminated with non-typhoidal Salmonella; 52.2% of isolates were multidrug resistant.•Chicken meat from wet markets had the highest loads of contamination with non-typhoidal Salmonella (median 3.2logMPN/g in positive samples).•Multidrug resistance was highest in Salmonella from chicken meat, and lowest in beef; the type of retail was not linked to increased resistance.•The most commonly identified serovar was multidrug resistant Salmonella Kentucky ST198, with high levels resistance against β-lactams and quinolones.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as the apical matrix for the placement of MTA in nonsurgical endodontic therapy for teeth with periapical ...lesions and open apices.
Twelve teeth from eleven patients with periapical periodontitis and open apices were enrolled in the study. Nonsurgical endodontic therapy was performed with the PRF used as an apical barrier and the MTA manipulated as an apical plug for further thermoplasticized gutta percha in the remaining part of the root canal. Clinical signs and periapical digital radiographs were recorded and analyzed to evaluate the curing progress after periodical follow-ups of 1, 3, and 6 months. The horizontal dimension of the periapical lesion was determined, and the changes in the dimensions were recorded each time. The Friedman test was used for statistical analysis, with P < .05 serving as the threshold for determining statistical significance.
All patients had no clinical symptoms after the first month of treatment, with a significant reduction in the periapical lesion after periodical appointments.
PRF is an effective barrier when combined with MTA for the treatment of teeth with periapical periodontitis and open apices.
The aim of the present pilot study was to assess the effectiveness of the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) apical barrier for the placement of MTA for the treatment of teeth with periapical lesions and ...open apices.
A total of thirty teeth on twenty-eight patients with open apices and periapical periodontitis were enrolled and divided into two groups in the present pilot study. In the PRF group (fourteen teeth in thirteen patients), nonsurgical endodontic treatment was performed using PRF as an apical matrix, after which the apical plug of the MTA was created. For the non-PRF group (fourteen teeth in fourteen patients), nonsurgical endodontic therapy was performed using only the MTA for an apical plug with no further periapical intervention. Clinical findings and periapical digital radiographs were used for evaluating the healing progress after periodic follow-ups of 1, 3, 6, and 9 months. The horizontal dimension of the periapical lesion was gauged, and the changes in the dimensions were recorded each time. The Friedman test, Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc correction, and Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis, with P < 0.05 serving as the threshold for determining statistical significance.
All patients in both groups in the present pilot study had no clinical symptoms after 1 month, with a significant reduction in the periapical lesion after periodic appointments. The lesion width of the PRF group was significantly smaller than that of the non-PRF group in the sixth and ninth month after treatment.
PRF is a promising apical barrier matrix when combined with MTA for the treatment of teeth with open apices and periapical periodontitis. Small number of study subjects and the short time of follow-up period limit the generalizability of these results.

Evaluation of liver fibrosis is necessary to make the therapeutic decision and assess the prognosis of CHB patients. The current study aimed to describe the progression and identify some influencing ...factors in patients with chronic hepatitis B at a General Hospital in Northern Vietnam. The longitudinal study included 55 eligible subjects diagnosed Hepatitis-B-virus. Dependent variable was the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index and we collected some demographic variables and disease related and behaviour variables. Bayesian Model Averaging was used to select variables into model. Mixed-effect linear models were used to evaluate the change of the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index over time and identify related factors. the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index differences between examinations, age of participants, working status were statistically significant. This pattern indicated that the average the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index of the population decreased by 0.005 (95% CI=-0.009; -0.001) after each patient's visit, and increased by 0.013 if the patient's age increased by 1 year (95% CI=0.005; 0.0219). For non-working patients, the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index was lower, coefficient was -0.054 (95% CI=-0.108; 0.001). Other variables such as gender, education level, time for disease detection, drinking tea, alcohol consumption, forgetting to take medicine and the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index were not significantly different. The study showed that the majority of study subjects had average the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index, and were relatively well controlled and treated during the study. Age and working status are factors that influence the the aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index.
Purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) can potentially improve rice growth, grain yield and soil fertility in acid sulfate soils (ASS) by acting as biofertilizers and bioremediators. Six strains of acid ...resistant PNSB (Rhodopseudomonas palustris; TLS12, VNS19, VNS32, VNS62 and VNW95, and Rhodopseudomonas harwoodiae TLW42) were evaluated, as single cultures and a mixed culture of the six strains, for their effects on rice growth and soil fertility in ASS with high Mn concentrations sampled at three sites in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. In pot experiments, all single PNSB strains in the liquid biofertilizer, especially strain VNS32, significantly improved most plant growth parameters, rice yield, and soil fertility. They increased NH4+ and available phosphorus (Pavail) but reduced Mn2+ compared with the controls in all three soils. In pot experiments, the solid PNSB biofertilizers significantly improved rice growth and grain yield, reduced accumulated Mn and increased soil fertility. The solid formula of six mixed strains was the most effective, followed by VNS32 singly, and lastly the carrier control with no added PNSB. In the field trials, the solid mixed PNSB biofertilizer combined with 75% NP fertilizer significantly enhanced rice growth, producing the same grain yields as 100% NP fertilizer at two of the sites, and a higher yield at one of the sites. In acidic paddy fields, acid resistant PNSB can act as biofertilizers and bioremediators to produce improvements in soil fertility and healthier rice crops.
•Six Rhodopseudomonas spp. were effectively applied in 3 acid sulfate soils (ASS).•R. palustris VNS32 was the most effective strain for rice growth and grain yield.•A solid biofertilizer of 6 mixed strains reduced Mn by 36% in rice grain in pots.•Big increases in available P, NH4+ and pH were key to increased rice yields.•A solid 6 mixed strain biofertilizer reduced fertilizer use by 25% in 3 ASS-paddy.
We investigated antimicrobial residues, non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS), Vibrio spp. and their associated antimicrobial resistance (AMR), in shrimps locally purchased in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). In ...addition, we investigated the relationship between AMR in NTS, Vibrio spp. and antimicrobial residue in the same sample. A total of 40 samples of shrimp heads/shells from different retail sources was cultured using ISO 6579–1:2017 (NTS) and ISO/TS 21872–1:2007 (Vibrio spp.). Phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility was investigated using Vitek (NTS, 34 antimicrobials) and disk diffusion (Vibrio spp., 12 antimicrobials). A total of 9 (22.5%) samples contained antimicrobial residue, including tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides and macrolides (in 7.5%, 7.5%, 2.5% and 2.5% of samples, respectively). Shrimp samples from supermarkets had a higher prevalence of antimicrobial residue than those purchased in street markets (50% vs. 13.3%) (p = 0.049). A total of 30 (75%) samples were contaminated with NTS. All samples contained Vibrio spp., with V. parahaemolyticus being most common (87.5% samples). A total of 58.9% NTS isolates were multidrug resistant. With regards to the highest priority, critically important antimicrobials, the highest resistance corresponded to quinolones (14.4–47.8%), followed by 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins (3.3–7.8%). Vibrio spp. isolates were characterised by their high resistance against ampicillin (82.7%) and 3rd generation cephalosporins (8.3–16.5%). Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) activity was detected in 28.1% V. parahaemolyticus isolates. Half of ESBL-positive V. parahaemolyticus strains harboured blaCTX-M1. We found an association between the presence of residues and the number of resistances for NTS (p = 0.075) and Vibrio spp. isolates (p = 0.093) from the same sample. These findings suggest that the presence of residues may contribute to the selection of AMR in foodborne pathogens in shrimps. Authorities should strengthen policies aiming at restricting inappropriate antimicrobial usage in shrimp farming, and step up monitoring of antimicrobial residues and food-borne pathogens at retail in Vietnam.
•Highest prevalence of antimicrobial residues found in shrimps from supermarkets.•75% samples were contaminated with non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS).•Isolates from samples with antimicrobial residues had highest prevalence of phenotypic resistance.•Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase activity detected in 28.1% V. parahaemolyticus isolates.
This study aimed to (i) evaluate purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) strains possessing the highest phosphorus (P) solubilizing capacity in field and (ii) determine the efficacy of PNSB biofertilizers ...in improving soil quality, P uptake, growth, and yield of pineapple cultivated in acid sulfate soil (ASS). A field experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with two factors, including the first factor as P fertilizer levels (0, 50, 75, and 100% P) based on recommended fertilizer formula (RFF) and the second factor as supplementation of biofertilizers containing P solubilizing PNSB (no inoculated PNSB, Rhodobacter sphaeroides W48, R. sphaeroides W42, and a mixture of R. sphaeroides W48 and W42). The results indicated that the supplementation of PNSB biofertilizers led to an increase of 25.3–33.9% in soluble P concentration in soil compared to control treatment. Among the selected PNSB strains, R. sphaeroides W42 and a mixture of the PNSB in biofertilizers solubilized all insoluble P fractions (Fe-P, Al-P, and Ca-P) and strain W48 in biofertilizers for Fe-P and Al-P. Furthermore, the supplementation of biofertilizers from R. sphaeroides W48 and W42 individually and their mixture raised plant height by 3.56–4.10% and available P concentration by 25.3–33.9%. Total P uptake in pineapple treatments with biofertilizers from mixed PNSB was 42.9% higher than that in the control treatment (p<0.05). Application of mixed PNSB strains can reduce 25% P of chemical fertilizer, but the pineapple yield rose over 12.1%. Both R. sphaeroides W48 and W42 are potent for use as crop yield enhancers to obtain the sustainable pineapple cultivation under acidic stress.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the causative agent of shrimp diseases, the most serious of which is acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). Bacteriophage is a virus of bacteria that can ...parasitize and destroy bacteria, so it is considered a potential alternative to antibiotics. The study was carried out to evaluate the treatment ability of bacteriophages on Litopenaeus vannamei after being infected by V. parahaemolyticus B4XOT2.2 isolated from the bottom mud of shrimp ponds infected with AHPND. The study used the histopathological survey method on shrimp at all three ages: postlarvae, adult shrimp at the ages of 30–45 days, and 55–60 days old, which were arranged into three treatments: healthy shrimp, diseased shrimp, and bacteriophage-treated shrimp. The results showed that: the concentration of Vibrio spp. in bacteriophage-treated treatment was decreased in all three groups (postlarvae, shrimp at the ages of 30–45 days, and 55–60 days old) from 3,7x103 CFU/mL to 2,2x102 CFU/mL after two days, from 4,6x104 CFU/mL to 3,3x102 CFU/mL after two days and from 4,6x104 CFU/mL to 5,6x103 CFU/mL after three days, respectively. The pathological signs and histological features of the infected shrimp samples were similar to those typical of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease and recovered in shrimp tissue after being treated with bacteriophages such as the hepatopancreas was also darker, the intestines gradually filled, no hematoma around the tubules were found, in the lumen of the tube reduced sloughing cells and blood cells, no melanization was observed.
