The article examines the activity of the Athenian institutions in the years between the city’s involvement in the events of the First Mithridatic war (88-86 BCE) and the visits of Antony to the city ...(42-38 BCE). It deals particularly with the changes occurred in the forms of expression of the traditional political vitality of the city. A focus to the increased care for public honours – especially for honours bestowed on Roman men and women – is the occasion to analyse the renovated aspects of the Agora and the Acropolis, where new monuments were set up and old or damaged buildings underwent restorations. Epigraphic evidences about the works undertaken in the precinct of the Asklepieion - on the southern slopes of the Acropolis - give information about the efforts made by wealthy private citizens and priests to revitalize the ritual activities in the site decades before the extensive restorations of the Augustan age. Texts dealing with political constitutions and judicial regulations will also be discussed in order to evaluate the possible existence of new lawcourts’ districts in the city.

Ne emerge un quadro variegato, all’interno del quale l’incontro tra il linguaggio diplomatico greco, che i mittenti delle epistole tentano in parte di riprodurre, e il lessico politico romano dà vita in quei testi ad un nuovo e ricco idioma - greco nella forma, romano nella sostanza - in grado di esprimere le diverse sfumature assunte dal potere romano in Oriente nella tarda età repubblicana. Nell’epistola romana in lingua greca si dovrà dunque riconoscere tanto uno strumento di imposizione dell’autorità del Senato e dei suoi rappresentanti sulle province orientali quanto un mezzo di espressione della benevolenza romana in Oriente o anche semplicemente un veicolo per comunicare soluzioni amministrative alle comunità interessate. This paper provides an in-depth study on the resort to letter-writing by the Romans in the diplomatic intercourses with the Greek communities from the exploits of Flamininus in Greece until the age of Caesar. Through the exam of very meaningful texts, it will be particularly tested the ability of Roman letter-writers to adopt and reinterpret the Hellenistic models of royal communication to the Greek cities and peoples, on each occasion accommodating those models for their own specific purposes. The result is a multi-coloured picture in which the contact between the Greek diplomatic language, that the Roman letter-writers tried partially to reproduce, and the Roman political lexicon generates a new and rich idiom – Greek in form, Roman in spirit (Sherk) – that suitably portrays the variable forms taken up by the Roman authority in the East during Late Republic. In the Roman epistle in Greek we should then recognize a tool for imposing the power of the Senate and its deputies on the Eastern provinces as well as a way of expressing Roman benevolence towards the Greeks or sometimes just a vehicle for the communication of administrative arrangements.
L’articolo intende fornire uno studio approfondito sull’utilizzo del mezzo epistolare da parte dei Romani nei rapporti con le compagini elleniche dall’intervento di Flaminino in Grecia all’età di ...Cesare. The marmor stele from Delos adorned the monument offered to Apollo by Antigonus Doson, the Macedonians and their allies in order to commemorate the great victory of Sellasia over the Spartans (summer ...222 BC). The text suggests that the money gained from a partial selling of the booty were allocated for the erection of the statue and the inscription. The dedication bears testimony to one of the last public act performed by Doson at the same time as the Greek cities celebrated him as benefactor and saviour and granted him divine honours just before his death in 221 BC.
The two case studies here collected provide the occasion for presenting the research work carried out by The Epigraphic Landscape of Athens Project, focused on the relationship between public ...epigraphy and urban spaces in ancient Athens. The first part, by Chiara Lasagni, focuses on the honorary decrees and statues voted by the Athenian Demos in the years 287-262, and attempts to outline some key coordinates about the epigraphic and ideological landscape produced after the revolt from Demetrius. The second part, by Stefano Tropea, deals with the evolution of the epigraphical landscape of the Athenian asty in the decades from the battle of Pydna of 168 to the second half of the I c. BC.
