Despite the fact that high order harmonic generation (HHG) aims at serving as a table-top light source for imaging applications with extremely high spatial resolution, a general lack of accurate ...conversion efficiency measurements exists in the field. Here, we present such a measurement for a HHG setup with a semi-infinite gas cell. By combining measurements with a calibrated photodiode sensitive in the extreme ultra-violet (XUV) and spatially resolved spectral measurements of HHG spectra, we are able to determine conversion efficiencies of the HHG process as well as brilliance values for individual harmonics. The method is explained in detail and applicable to any target geometry.
The present study investigates a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) spelling procedure based on the P300 evoked potential. It uses a small matrix of words arranged in a tree-shaped organization ...("multimenu"), and allows the user to build phrases one word at a time, instead of letter by letter. Experiments were performed in two sessions on a group of seven healthy volunteers. In the former, the "multimenu" was tested with a total of 60 choices: 30 "externally-imposed" selections and 30 "free-choice" selections. In the latter, 3 × 3 matrices were compared with 6 × 6 matrices. Each matrix was composed of letters or words, for a total of four matrices. Differences in classifier accuracy, bit rate and amplitude of the evoked P300 were evaluated. Average accuracy in all subjects was 87% with no differences between the selection methods. The 3 × 3 "multimenu" obtained the same level of classifier accuracy as the 6 × 6 matrices, even with a significantly lower amplitude of the P300. Bit rate was increased when using the 3 × 3 matrices compared to the 6 × 6 ones. The "multimenu" system was equally effective, but faster than conventional, letter-based matrices. By improving the speed of communication, this method can be of help to patients with severe difficulties in communication.
In a semiconductor laser with saturable absorber, solitons may spontaneously drift and/or oscillate. We study three different regimes characterized by strong intensity oscillations, both periodic and ...chaotic. We show that (i) soliton dynamics may be similar to that of passively Q-switched lasers, (ii) solitons may drift and oscillate simultaneously, and (iii) chaotic solitons may coexist with stationary ones and with the laser off solution.

1,1,4,7,10,10-Hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTTA) emerged from a limited parallel screening of selected polyamines as the most appropriate additive for an especially problematic Koenigs-Knorr ...glucuronidation. This initial finding rapidly evolved into a reliable and high-yielding procedure through the use of two sets of experimental designs. The detailed effect of the stoichiometry of reagents and the amount of amine additive on reaction yield was elucidated. The complexity of the response surface for product yield, described by a third-order polynomial equation, together with ancillary kinetic experiments evidenced the multiple role of HMTTA in the present glucuronidation process.
Three chemical classes of serotonin 5-HT4 receptor agonists have been identified so far: 5-substituted indoles (e.g. 5-HT), benzamides (e.g. renzapride) and benzimidazolones (e.g. BIMU 8). In a ...search for 5-HT4 receptor antagonists, we have discovered that the benzimidazolone derivative DAU 6285 (for structure see text), is 3-5 times more potent than tropisetron in blocking 5-HT, renzapride and BIMU 8 induced stimulation of adenylate cyclase activity in mouse embryo colliculi neurons. Schild plot analysis yielded Ki values of 220, 181 and 255 nmol/l, respectively. In addition, DAU 6285 showed poor activity as a 5-HT3 receptor ligand with respect to tropisetron, as demonstrated by in vitro binding studies (Ki, 322 vs 2.8 nmol/l) and by its antagonistic activity in the Bezold-Jarisch reflex test (ID50, 231 vs 0.5 micrograms/kg, i.v.). No significant binding (Ki greater than 10 mumol/l) of DAU 6285 to serotonergic 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1C, 5-HT1D, and 5-HT2 receptors as well as to adrenergic alpha 1, alpha 2, dopaminergic D1, D2 or muscarinic M1-M3 receptor subtypes was found. The data indicate that DAU 6285 has a somewhat higher affinity than tropisetron for 5-HT4 receptors, a property confirmed in functional tests, and much lower affinity than tropisetron for 5-HT3 receptors. The compound represents a new interesting tool for investigating the pharmacological and physiological properties of 5-HT4 receptors.
The muscarinic receptors responsible for two effects elicited by McN‐A‐343, i.e. the relaxation of the rat duodenum and the inhibition of the twitch contraction of rabbit vas deferens, were ...investigated by use of derivatives of 4‐diphenyl acetoxy‐N‐methyl piperidine methobromide (4‐DAMP). Both receptors had been previously identified as M1 on the basis of the high affinity shown towards pirenzepine. Schild analysis of antagonism revealed that the affinities of 4‐DAMP and three of its analogues in the rat duodenum were significantly different from those estimated in rabbit vas deferens. These data indicate that distinct receptor subtypes mediate duodenal relaxation and vas deferens inhibition of twitch contraction and suggest that receptors classified as M1 by means of pirenzepine affinity constitute a heterogeneous population.
Abstract The presence of nonprogressive cognitive impairment is recognized as a common feature in a substantial proportion of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. To investigate the possible ...role of mutations along the dystrophin gene affecting different brain dystrophin isoforms and specific cognitive profiles, 42 school-age children affected with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, subdivided according to sites of mutations along the dystrophin gene, underwent a battery of tests tapping a wide range of intellectual, linguistic, and neuropsychologic functions. Full-scale intelligence quotient was approximately 1 S.D. below the population average in the whole group of dystrophic children. Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mutations located in the distal portion of the dystrophin gene (involving the 140-kDa brain protein isoform, called Dp140) were generally more severely affected and expressed different patterns of strengths and impairments, compared with patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mutations located in the proximal portion of the dystrophin gene (not involving Dp140). Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and distal mutations demonstrated specific impairments in visuospatial functions and visual memory (which seemed intact in proximally mutated patients) and greater impairment in syntactic processing.
