The asymptotic-giant-branch star R Sculptoris is surrounded by a detached shell of dust and gas. The shell originates from a thermal pulse during which the star underwent a brief period of increased ...mass loss. It has hitherto been impossible to constrain observationally the timescales and mass-loss properties during and after a thermal pulse--parameters that determine the lifetime of the asymptotic giant branch and the amount of elements returned by the star. Here we report observations of CO emission from the circumstellar envelope and shell around R Sculptoris with an angular resolution of 1.3″. What was previously thought to be only a thin, spherical shell with a clumpy structure is revealed to also contain a spiral structure. Spiral structures associated with circumstellar envelopes have been previously seen, leading to the conclusion that the systems must be binaries. Combining the observational data with hydrodynamic simulations, we conclude that R Sculptoris is a binary system that underwent a thermal pulse about 1,800 years ago, lasting approximately 200 years. About 3 × 10(-3) solar masses of material were ejected at a velocity of 14.3 km s(-1) and at a rate around 30 times higher than the pre-pulse mass-loss rate. This shows that about three times more mass was returned to the interstellar medium during and immediately after the pulse than previously thought.
GRAVITY is a new instrument to coherently combine the light of the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope Interferometer to form a telescope with an equivalent 130 m diameter angular ...resolution and a collecting area of 200 m2. The instrument comprises fiber fed integrated optics beam combination, high resolution spectroscopy, built-in beam analysis and control, near-infrared wavefront sensing, phase-tracking, dual-beam operation, and laser metrology. GRAVITY opens up to optical/infrared interferometry the techniques of phase referenced imaging and narrow angle astrometry, in many aspects following the concepts of radio interferometry. This article gives an overview of GRAVITY and reports on the performance and the first astronomical observations during commissioning in 2015/16. We demonstrate phase-tracking on stars as faint as mK ≈ 10 mag, phase-referenced interferometry of objects fainter than mK ≈ 15 mag with a limiting magnitude of mK ≈ 17 mag, minute long coherent integrations, a visibility accuracy of better than 0.25%, and spectro-differential phase and closure phase accuracy better than 0.5°, corresponding to a differential astrometric precision of better than ten microarcseconds (μas). The dual-beam astrometry, measuring the phase difference of two objects with laser metrology, is still under commissioning. First observations show residuals as low as 50 μas when following objects over several months. We illustrate the instrument performance with the observations of archetypical objects for the different instrument modes. Examples include the Galactic center supermassive black hole and its fast orbiting star S2 for phase referenced dual-beam observations and infrared wavefront sensing, the high mass X-ray binary BP Cru and the active galactic nucleus of PDS 456 for a few μas spectro-differential astrometry, the T Tauri star S CrA for a spectro-differential visibility analysis, ξ Tel and 24 Cap for high accuracy visibility observations, and η Car for interferometric imaging with GRAVITY.
Context. Mass loss plays a crucial role in the lives of massive stars, especially as the star leaves the main sequence and evolves to the red supergiant (RSG) phase. Despite its importance, the ...physical processes that trigger mass-loss events in RSGs are still not well understood. Recently, we showed that adding a semi-empirical wind to atmosphere models can accurately reproduce observed extensions in the atmospheres of RSGs, where the mass-loss events are taking place, particularly in the CO and water lines. Aims. By adding a static wind to a MARCS atmospheric model, we computed synthetic observables that match new interferometric data of the RSGs AH Sco, KW Sgr, V602 Car, CK Car, and V460 Car obtained with the VLTI/MATISSE and VLTI/GRAVITY instruments between August 2022 and February 2023. We also used archival VLTI/AMBER data of KW Sgr and VLTI/GRAVITY data of AH Sco. The MATISSE wavelength range includes the SiO molecule at 4.0 μ m with a spectral resolution of R ~ 500. Methods. The model intensities with respect to the line-of-sight angle ( μ ) as well as the spectra and visibilities were computed using the stellar radiative transfer code T URBOSPECTRUM . We found the best-fit model, mass-loss rate, and best-fit angular Rosseland diameter for the observations. We simultaneously matched our model to the data, covering a wavelength range of 1.8–5.0 μm, which corresponds to the K, L , and M bands. Results. Our models reproduce the spectro-interferometric data over this wide wavelength range, including extended atmospheric layers of CO, H 2 O, and SiO. We obtain a range of Rosseland angular diameters between 3.0 < θ Ross < 5.5 mas and a range of mass-loss rates of −6.5 < log Ṁ / M ⊙ yr −1 < −4 for our five targets. In our best-fit models, the partial pressure of SiO relative to the gas pressure, P SiO / P g , and the SiO 4.0 μm line intensity increase between 2 and 3 stellar radii. The relative intensity depends on the luminosity used for our models, since the more luminous models have a higher mass-loss rate. Conclusions. This work further demonstrates that our MARCS+wind model can reproduce the observed physical extension of RSG atmospheres for several spectral diagnostics spanning a broad wavelength range. We reproduce both spectra and visibilities of newly obtained data as well as provide temperature and density stratifications that are consistent with the observations. With the MATISSE data, we newly include the extension of SiO layers as a precursor of silicate dust.
Context. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are one of the major sources of dust in the universe. The formation of molecules and dust grains and their subsequent expulsion into the interstellar ...medium via strong stellar winds is under intense investigation. This is in particular true for oxygen-rich stars, for which the path of dust formation has remained unclear. Aims. We conducted spatially and spectrally resolved mid-infrared multi-epoch interferometric observations to investigate the dust formation process in the extended atmospheres of oxygen-rich AGB stars. Methods. We observed the Mira variable AGB stars S Ori, GX Mon, and R Cnc between February 2006 and March 2009 with the MIDI instrument at the VLT interferometer. We compared the data to radiative transfer models of the dust shells, where the central stellar intensity profiles were described by dust-free dynamic model atmospheres. We used Al2O3 and warm silicate grains, following earlier studies in the literature. Results. Our S Ori and R Cnc data could be well described by an Al2O3 dust shell alone, and our GX Mon data by a mix of an Al2O3 and a silicate shell. The best-fit parameters for S Ori and R Cnc included photospheric angular diameters ΘPhot of 9.7 ± 1.0 mas and 12.3 ± 1.0 mas, optical depths τV(Al2O3) of 1.5 ± 0.5 and 1.35 ± 0.2, and inner radii Rin of 1.9 ± 0.3 RPhot and 2.2 ± 0.3 RPhot, respectively. Best-fit parameters for GX Mon were ΘPhot = 8.7 ± 1.3 mas, τV(Al2O3) = 1.9 ± 0.6, Rin(Al2O3) = 2.1 ± 0.3 RPhot, τV(silicate)= 3.2 ± 0.5, and Rin(silicate)= 4.6 ± 0.2 RPhot. Our data did not show evidence of intra-cycle and cycle-to-cycle variability or of asymmetries within the error-bars and within the limits of our baseline and phase coverage. Conclusions. Our model fits constrain the chemical composition and the inner boundary radii of the dust shells, as well as the photospheric angular diameters. Our interferometric results are consistent with Al2O3 grains condensing close to the stellar surface at about 2 stellar radii, co-located with the extended atmosphere and SiO maser emission, and warm silicate grains at larger distances of about 4–5 stellar radii. We verified that the number densities of aluminum can match that of the best-fit Al2O3 dust shell near the inner dust radius in sufficiently extended atmospheres, confirming that Al2O3 grains can be seed particles for the further dust condensation. Together with literature data of the mass-loss rates, our sample is consistent with a hypothesis that stars with low mass-loss rates form primarily dust that preserves the spectral properties of Al2O3, and stars with higher mass-loss rate form dust with properties of warm silicates.

-an event referred to as Betelgeuse's Great Dimming. Here we report high-angular-resolution observations showing that the southern hemisphere of Betelgeuse was ten times darker than usual in the visible spectrum during its Great Dimming. Observations and modelling support a scenario in which a dust clump formed recently in the vicinity of the star, owing to a local temperature decrease in a cool patch that appeared on the photosphere. The directly imaged brightness variations of Betelgeuse evolved on a timescale of weeks. Our findings suggest that a component of mass loss from red supergiants
is inhomogeneous, linked to a very contrasted and rapidly changing photosphere.
We find that CD11c+cells with many markers of dendritic cells (DCs) are a major cell type in the skin lesions of psoriasis. These CD11c+cells, which are evident in both epidermis and dermis, are the ...sites for the expression of two mediators of inflammation, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and$TNF-\alpha$in diseased skin. These cells express HLA-DR, CD40, and CD86, lack the Langerin and CD14 markers of Langerhans cells and monocytes, respectively, and to a significant extent express the DC maturation markers DC-LAMP and CD83. Treatment of psoriasis with efalizumab (anti-CD11a, Raptiva) strongly reduces infiltration by these DCs in patients responding to this agent. Disease activity after therapy was more related to DC infiltrates and iNOS mRNA levels than T cell infiltrates, and CD11c+cells responded more quickly to therapy than epidermal keratinocytes. Our results suggest that a type of DC, which resembles murine "Tip-DCs" that can accumulate during infection, has proinflammatory effects in psoriasis through nitric oxide and$TNF-\alpha$production, and can be an important target for suppressive therapies.
Aims. We present the atmospheric structure and the fundamental properties of the red supergiants (RSGs) AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr based on VLTI/AMBER observations. Methods. We carried out ...spectro-interferometric observations of AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr in the near-infrared K band (1.92–2.47 μm) with the VLTI/AMBER instrument with spatial and spectral resolutions of 3 milliarcsec and 1500, respectively, and compared the data to a new grid of hydrostatic PHOENIX model atmospheres. Results. In our visibility data, we observe molecular layers of water and CO in extended atmospheres. For a uniform disk modeling, we observe size increases at the water band centered at 1.9 μm of 10% to 25% and at the CO bandheads at 2.3–2.5 μm of 20%–35% with respect to the near-continuum bandpass at around 2.20 μm. Our near-infrared spectra of AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr are well reproduced by the PHOENIX model atmospheres. The continuum visibility values are consistent with a limb-darkened disk as predicted by the PHOENIX models. However, the model visibilities do not predict the large observed extensions of the molecular layers. Comparing the continuum visibility values to PHOENIX models, we estimate the Rosseland-mean photospheric angular diameters of AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr to be 5.81 ± 0.15 mas, 5.48 ± 0.10 mas, and 3.91 ± 0.25 mas, respectively. Together with the distance and the spectro-photometry, we calculate radii of 1411 ± 124 R⊙ for AH Sco, 1708 ± 192 R⊙ for UY Sct, and 1009 ± 142 R⊙ for KW Sgr and effective temperatures of 3682 ± 190 K for AH Sco, 3365 ± 134 K for UY Sct, and 3720 ± 183 K for KW Sgr. Conclusions. AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr exhibit extended atmospheric layers of H2O and CO. The PHOENIX atmosphere models predict the spectra and the continuum visibility values, but cannot reproduce the large extensions of the molecular layers. This indicates that the opacities of the molecular bands are included, but that the model atmospheres are too compact compared to the observations. The observed extended layers may be levitated by processes such as pulsation or convection, which are not included in the hydrostatic atmospheric models. The location of the targets in the HR-diagram is confirmed to be close to, and possibly slightly to the right of, the Hayashi limit of recent evolutionary tracks corresponding to masses between about 20 M⊙ and 40 M⊙.
The analysis of patient blood transcriptional profiles offers a means to investigate the immunological mechanisms relevant to human diseases on a genome-wide scale. In addition, such studies ...provide a basis for the discovery of clinically relevant biomarker signatures. We designed a strategy for microarray analysis that is based on the identification of transcriptional modules formed by genes coordinately expressed in multiple disease data sets. Mapping changes in gene expression at the module level generated disease-specific transcriptional fingerprints that provide a stable framework for the visualization and functional interpretation of microarray data. These transcriptional modules were used as a basis for the selection of biomarkers and the development of a multivariate transcriptional indicator of disease progression in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Thus, this work describes the implementation and application of a methodology designed to support systems-scale analysis of the human immune system in translational research settings.
Most breast cancer deaths are caused by metastasis and treatment options beyond radiation and cytotoxic drugs, which have severe side effects, and hormonal treatments, which are or become ineffective ...for many patients, are urgently needed. This study reanalyzed existing data from three genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using a novel computational biostatistics approach (muGWAS), which had been validated in studies of 600-2000 subjects in epilepsy and autism. MuGWAS jointly analyzes several neighboring single nucleotide polymorphisms while incorporating knowledge about genetics of heritable diseases into the statistical method and about GWAS into the rules for determining adaptive genome-wide significance. Results from three independent GWAS of 1000-2000 subjects each, which were made available under the National Institute of Health's "Up For A Challenge" (U4C) project, not only confirmed cell-cycle control and receptor/AKT signaling, but, for the first time in breast cancer GWAS, also consistently identified many genes involved in endo-/exocytosis (EEC), most of which had already been observed in functional and expression studies of breast cancer. In particular, the findings include genes that translocate (ATP8A1, ATP8B1, ANO4, ABCA1) and metabolize (AGPAT3, AGPAT4, DGKQ, LPPR1) phospholipids entering the phosphatidylinositol cycle, which controls EEC. These novel findings suggest scavenging phospholipids as a novel intervention to control local spread of cancer, packaging of exosomes (which prepare distant microenvironment for organ-specific metastases), and endocytosis of β1 integrins (which are required for spread of metastatic phenotype and mesenchymal migration of tumor cells). Beta-cyclodextrins (βCD) have already been shown to be effective in in vitro and animal studies of breast cancer, but exhibits cholesterol-related ototoxicity. The smaller alpha-cyclodextrins (αCD) also scavenges phospholipids, but cannot fit cholesterol. An in-vitro study presented here confirms hydroxypropyl (HP)-αCD to be twice as effective as HPβCD against migration of human cells of both receptor negative and estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer. If the previous successful animal studies with βCDs are replicated with the safer and more effective αCDs, clinical trials of adjuvant treatment with αCDs are warranted. Ultimately, all breast cancer are expected to benefit from treatment with HPαCD, but women with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) will benefit most, because they have fewer treatment options and their cancer advances more aggressively.
This research has two main goals. First, we present the atmospheric structure and the fundamental parameters of three red super-giants (RSGs), increasing the sample of RSGs observed by near-infrared ...spectro-interferometry. We carried out spectro-interferometric observations of the RSGs V602 Car, HD 95687, and HD 183589 in the near-infrared K-band (1.92-2.47 mum) with the VLTI/AMBER instrument at medium spectral resolution (R ~ 1500). To categorize and comprehend the extended atmospheres, we compared our observational results to predictions by available hydrostatic PHOENIX, available 3D convection, and new 1D self-excited pulsation models of RSGs. The location of our RSG sources in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is confirmed to be consistent with the red limits of recent evolutionary tracks. The observed extensions of the atmospheric layers of our sample of RSGs are comparable to those of Mira stars. This confirms that neither convection nor pulsation alone can levitate the molecular atmospheres of RSGs. Our observed correlation of atmospheric extension with luminosity supports a scenario of radiative acceleration on Doppler-shifted molecular lines.
