Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is featured with inflammation and extensive lung remodeling caused by overloaded deposition of extracellular matrix. Scutellarin is the major effective ingredient ...of breviscapine and its anti-inflammation efficacy has been reported before. Nevertheless, the impact of scutellarin on IPF and the downstream molecular mechanism remain unclear. In this study, scutellarin suppressed BLM-induced inflammation via NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway both in vivo and in vitro. BLM significantly elevated p-p65/p65 ratio, IκBα degradation, and levels of NLRP3, caspase-1, caspase-11, ASC, GSDMD
, IL-1β, and IL-18, while scutellarin reversed the above alterations except for that of caspase-11. Scutellarin inhibited BLM-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process in vivo and in vitro. The expression levels of EMT-related markers, including fibronectin, vimentin, N-cadherin, matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9, were increased in BLM group, and suppressed by scutellarin. The expression level of E-cadherin showed the opposite changes. However, overexpression of NLRP3 eliminated the anti-inflammation and anti-EMT functions of scutellarin in vitro. In conclusion, scutellarin suppressed inflammation and EMT in BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis through NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling.

While infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is known to be an essential risk factor for the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), other co-factors including genetic factors are thought to ...play an important role. In this review, we summarize association studies conducted over the past decade to evaluate the role of genetic polymorphisms in NPC development. A review of the literature identified close to 100 studies, including 3 genome-wide association studies (GWAS), since 2000 that evaluated genetic polymorphisms and NPC risk in at least 100 NPC cases and 100 controls. Consistent evidence for associations were reported for a handful of genes, including immune-related HLA Class I genes, DNA repair gene RAD51L1, cell cycle control genes MDM2 and TP53, and cell adhesion/migration gene MMP2. However, for most of the genes evaluated, there was no effort to replicate findings and studies were largely modest in size, typically consisting of no more than a few hundred cases and controls. The small size of most studies, and the lack of attempts at replication have limited progress in understanding the genetics of NPC. Moving forward, if we are to advance our understanding of genetic factors involved in the development of NPC, and of the impact of gene-gene and gene-environment interations in the development of this disease, consortial efforts that pool across multiple, well-designed and coordinated efforts will most likely be required.
Increasing evidence has suggested that the presence of remnant lipoproteins is a significant risk factor for atherosclerosis. Remnant lipoproteins are lipoproteins that are rich in triglycerides ...(TGs), and the main components include very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in the fasting state. Diabetic patients often have hypertriglyceridemia with elevated levels of VLDL cholesterol but normal levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The aim of the present study was to elucidate the potential role of remnant lipoproteins-induced atherosclerosis in the occurrence and development of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in diabetic patients with coronary artery disease.
The present study enrolled 2312 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention from January 2013 to December 2014 and who were followed up by angiography. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of ISR, and multivariate Cox's proportional hazards regression modelling showed that remnant-like particle cholesterol (RLP-C) was an independent risk factor for ISR. According to the receiver operating characteristic curve, the optimal cutoff point of the RLP-C was identified, and the patients were further divided into 2 groups. Propensity score matching analysis was performed, and 762 pairs were successfully matched. Log-rank tests were used to compare Kaplan-Meier curves for overall follow-up to assess ISR.
The multivariate Cox's proportional hazards regression analysis showed that RLP-C was independently associated with ISR, and the baseline RLP-C level at 0.505 mmol/L was identified as the optimal cutoff point to predict ISR. Patients were divided into 2 groups by RLP levels. After propensity score matching analysis, a total of 762 pairs matched patients were generated. Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the estimated cumulative rate of ISR was significantly higher in patients with RLP-C levels ≥ 0.505 mmol/L (log-rank P < 0.001; HR equal to 4.175, 95% CI = 3.045-5.723, P < 0.001) compared to patients with RLP-C levels < 0.505 mmol/L.
The present study emphasized the importance of remnant-like particle cholesterol in cardiovascular pathology in diabetic patients. Physicians should take measures to control RLP-C below the level of 0.505 mmol/L to better prevent of in-stent restenosis in diabetic patients.

•An in situ growth method to prepare ZIF-67/PAN filter.•The ZIF-67/PAN filter demonstrates a high efficiency for organic pollutants removal by activation PMS.•The catalytic device ...shows the great potential of ZIF-67/PAN filter for water purification in practical.
Sulfate radical (SO4•−)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) hold great promise for water purification due to their strong oxidizing and high selectivity. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to generate SO4•− have shown a bright future. However, the intrinsic nature of powder MOF nanocrystals, such as brittleness and poor processability, largely disturb their large-scale applications in practical. Herein, we develop an in situ growth method to prepare MOF filters. ZIF-67 in situ growth on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers lead to the ZIF-67/PAN composite fibers with high loading (up to 50 wt %). The loading ZIF-67 can retain their morphology and structure, which is comparable with that of pristine ZIF-67 powder. The ZIF-67/PAN filter demonstrates a high efficiency for organic pollutants removal by PMS activation. Furthermore, through the fabrication of filtration device, the dynamic catalysis results show the ZIF-67/PAN filter is a promising material for water purification. This work provides a new method for applying MOFs-based functional materials to practical water remediation and other separation applications.
Background
The survival outcomes of different salvage treatments for patients with recurrent oral cancer remain unclear.
Methods
A total of 556 patients with recurrent oral cancer between 2010 and ...2015 were reviewed. Clinical/pathological risk factors and different salvage treatments were analyzed.
Results
The 2‐year disease‐free survival rates after recurrence in patients not receiving salvage operation (305 patients), receiving salvage operation with (121 patients), and without (130 patients) major pathological risk factors (margin or extranodal extension) were 5.3%, 32.4%, and 77.2%, respectively (p < 0.001). The 2‐year overall survival rates were 20.3%, 58.4%, and 89.2%, respectively (p < 0.001). A late‐onset recurrence, salvage radiation, and salvage operation were independent factors for good disease‐free and overall survival. Salvage radiation showed survival benefits among patients not indicated for salvage operations.
Conclusions
Salvage operation was the first choice for recurrent oral cancer. Patients who received the salvage operation without major risk factors had the best survival.
A two-dimensional nanoscale structure which consists of two metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides coupled to each other by a ring resonator is designed. The transmission characteristics of surface ...plasmon polaritons are studied in this structure. There are several types of modes in the transmission spectrum. These modes exhibit red shift when the radius of the ring increases. The transmission properties of such structure are simulated by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method, and the eignwavelengths of the ring resonator are calculated theoretically. Results obtained by the theory of the ring resonator are consistent with those from the FDTD simulations.
Abstract
Context
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) is overexpressed in thyroid cancer and certain malignancies. Furthermore, DPP4 has been identified as a discriminatory marker for thyroid cancer. ...However, it remains unclear whether DPP4 expression plays a prognostic role.
Objective
The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and function of DPP4 in thyroid cancer and the mechanisms involved.
Design
We determined the expression of DPP4 by immunohistochemistry in tissue microarrays of thyroid tumors. In vitro functional studies were performed after genetic and pharmacological inhibition of DPP4. Gene expression and pathway analyses were used to identify downstream targets. The therapeutic potential of DPP4 inhibition was evaluated in a mouse xenograft model.
Results
High DPP4 expression was associated with extrathyroidal extension (P < 0.001), BRAF mutation (P < 0.001), and advanced tumor stage (P = 0.007) in papillary thyroid cancer. Patients in the high–DPP4 expression group were less likely to be classified as having no evidence of disease at final follow-up (P = 0.042). DPP4 silencing or treatment with DPP4 inhibitors significantly suppressed colony formation, cell migration, and invasion. Analysis of differentially expressed genes after DPP4 knockdown suggested that the transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway is involved. In vivo experiments revealed that sitagliptin treatment reduced tumor growth and xenograft transforming growth factor-β receptor I expression.
Conclusions
Increased DPP4 expression is associated with cellular invasion and more aggressive disease in papillary thyroid cancer. Targeting DPP4 may be a therapeutic strategy for DPP4-expressing thyroid cancer.
We studied DPP4 expression in thyroid tumors and found that DPP4 upregulation is associated with more advanced papillary thyroid cancer and may be a prognostic marker and therapeutic target.
Background
Oral cancer causes significant morbidity and mortality. Chemoprevention utilizes medication or natural compounds to reverse oral premalignant lesions and to prevent second primary tumors.
...Methods
A comprehensive PubMed database and Cochrane Library search from 1980 to 2021 was performed using the keywords “leukoplakia,” “oral premalignant lesion,” and “chemoprevention.”
Results
Chemopreventive agents included retinoids, carotenoids, cyclooxygenase inhibitor, herbal extracts, bleomycin, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, metformin, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Although some agents demonstrated effect in reducing premalignant lesions and preventing second primary tumors, the results among different studies were highly variable.
Conclusions
The results of different trials, albeit inconsistent, provided substantial information for future studies. In the era of personalized medicine, future studies will focus on identifying specific biomarkers and molecular profile to monitor and to prevent malignant transformation. Larger trials are warranted to validate the effect of chemopreventive agents.
