Metal–organic frameworks with unsaturated metal centers in their crystal structures, such as Ni/DOBDC and Mg/DOBDC, are promising adsorbents for carbon dioxide capture from flue gas due to their high ...CO2 capacities at subatmospheric pressures. However, stability is a critical issue for their application. In this paper, the stabilities of Ni/DOBDC and Mg/DOBDC are investigated. Effects of steam conditioning, simulated flue gas conditioning, and long-term storage on CO2 adsorption capacities are considered. Results show that Ni/DOBDC can maintain its CO2 capacity after steam conditioning and long-term storage, whereas Mg/DOBDC does not. Nitrogen isotherms for Mg/DOBDC show a drop in surface area after steaming, corresponding to the decrease in CO2 adsorption, which may be caused by a reduction of unsaturated metal centers in its structure. Conditioning with dry simulated flue gas at room temperature only slightly affects CO2 adsorption in Ni/DOBDC. However, introducing water vapor into the simulated flue gas further reduces the CO2 capacity of Ni/DOBDC.
Psychosocial and behavioral outcomes of genetic testing in oncology are well known, however, it is unclear how these findings will generalize to more complex genomic testing. The aim of this ...systematic review was to assess the psychosocial and behavioral outcomes of cancer genomic testing. Studies were selected for inclusion if they were published from January 2003 to January 2017 and addressed psychological and behavioral outcomes of cancer genomic testing in adults. A review of four databases identified 9620 abstracts, with 22 publications meeting the inclusion criteria. Of the included articles, 11 studies reported on outcomes of germline testing, with three articles assessing panel testing and eight SNP testing. No studies assessed the outcomes of WGS or WES. Eleven articles assessed the outcomes of somatic testing, including testing for cancer prognosis and for personalized therapies. Studies were biased toward breast cancer and Caucasian women with high education and socioeconomic status. While studies demonstrated limited adverse psychological outcomes associated with genomic testing, a lack of consistency in psychosocial measures precluded any meta-analysis. Changes in health behavior following positive results were limited, and in some cases risk perception was not altered following genomic testing. There is limited evidence of adverse psychosocial outcomes and changes in health behavior following genomic testing to assess cancer risk. Findings from this review highlight the need for longitudinal research with superior methodological and theoretical design.
Researchers and research participants increasingly support returning clinically actionable genetic research findings to participants, but researchers may lack the skills and resources to do so. In ...response, a genetic counsellor-led program to facilitate the return of clinically actionable findings to research participants was developed to fill the identified gap in research practice and meet Australian research guidelines. A steering committee of experts reviewed relevant published literature and liaised with researchers, research participants and clinicians to determine the scope of the program, as well as the structure, protocols and infrastructure. A program called My Research Results (MyRR) was developed, staffed by genetic counsellors with input from the steering committee, infrastructure services and a genomic advisory committee. MyRR is available to Human Research Ethics Committee approved studies Australia-wide and comprises genetic counselling services to notify research participants of clinically actionable research findings, support for researchers with developing an ethical strategy for managing research findings and an online information platform. The results notification strategy is an evidence-based two-step model, which has been successfully used in other Australian studies. MyRR is a translational program supporting researchers and research participants to access clinically actionable research findings.
The search for signs of life on extraterrestrial planetary bodies is among NASA's top priorities in Solar System exploration. The associated pursuit of organics and biomolecules as evidence of past ...or present life demands in situ investigations of planetary bodies for which sample return missions are neither practical nor affordable. These in situ studies require instrumentation capable of sensitive chemical analyses of complex mixtures including a broad range of organic molecules. Instrumentation must also be capable of autonomous operation aboard a robotically controlled vehicle that collects data and transmits it back to Earth. Microchip capillary electrophoresis (μCE) coupled to laser‐induced fluorescence (LIF) detection provides this required sensitivity and targets a wide range of relevant organics while offering low mass, volume, and power requirements. Thus, this technology would be ideally suited for in situ studies of astrobiology targets, such as Mars, Europa, Enceladus, and Titan. In this review, we introduce the characteristics of these planetary bodies that make them compelling destinations for extraterrestrial astrobiological studies, and the principal groups of organics of interest associated with each. And although the technology we describe here was first developed specifically for proposed studies of Mars, by summarizing its evolution over the past decade, we demonstrate how μCE‐LIF instrumentation has become an ideal candidate for missions of exploration to all of these nearby worlds in our Solar System.
Despite multiple orbiter and landed missions to extraterrestrial bodies in the solar system, including Mars and Titan, we still know relatively little about the detailed chemical composition and ...quantity of organics and biomolecules in those bodies. For chemical analysis on astrobiologically relevant targets such as Mars, Europa, Titan, and Enceladus, instrumentation should be extremely sensitive and capable of analyzing a broad range of organic molecules. Microchip capillary electrophoresis (μCE) with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection provides this required sensitivity and targets a wide range of relevant markers but, to date, has lacked the necessary degree of automation for spaceflight applications. Here we describe a fully integrated microfluidic device capable of performing automated end-to-end analyses of amino acids by μCE with LIF detection. The device integrates an array of pneumatically actuated valves and pumps for autonomous fluidic routing with an electrophoretic channel. Operation of the device, including manipulation of liquids for sample pretreatment and electrophoretic analysis, was performed exclusively via computer control. The device was validated by mixing of laboratory standards and labeling of amino acids with Pacific Blue succinimidyl ester followed by electrophoretic analysis. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of completely automated end-to-end μCE analyses on a single, fully integrated microfluidic device.
This study aimed to develop an online educational program for using polygenic risk score (PRS) for breast and ovarian cancer risk assessments and to evaluate the impact on the attitudes, confidence, ...knowledge, and preparedness of genetic health care providers (GHPs).
The educational program comprises an online module that covers the theoretical aspects of PRS and a facilitated virtual workshop with prerecorded role-plays and case discussions. Data were collected in pre- and posteducation surveys. Eligible participants were GHPs working in Australian familial cancer clinics registered to recruit patients for a breast and ovarian cancer PRS clinical trial (n = 12).
A total of 124 GHPs completed the PRS education, of whom 80 (64%) and 67 (41%) completed the pre- and posteducation surveys, respectively. Before education, GHPs reported limited experience, confidence, and preparedness using PRS, but they recognized its potential benefits. After education, GHPs indicated improved attitudes (P ≤ .001), confidence (P ≤ .001), knowledge (P ≤ .001), and preparedness (P ≤ .001) to use PRS. Most GHPs thought that the program entirely met their learning needs (73%) and was completely relevant to their clinical practice (88%). GHPs identified PRS implementation barriers, including limited funding models, diversity issues, and need for clinical guidelines.
Our education program improved GHP attitudes, confidence, knowledge, and preparedness for using PRS/personalized risk and provides a framework for the development of future programs.

Radon exposure can cause oxidative stress, leading to pulmonary ...inflammation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pro-carcinogenic inflammatory cytokine that plays a pivotal role in lung cancer development.
We assessed whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL6 promoter are associated with lung cancer in former uranium miners with high occupational exposure to radon gas.
Genetic associations were assessed in a case-control study of former uranium miners (242 cases and 336 controls). A replication study was performed using data from the Gene Environment Association Studies (GENEVA) Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) of Lung Cancer and Smoking. Functional relevance of the SNPs was characterized using in vitro approaches.
We found that rs1800797 was associated with squamous cell carcinoma in miners and with a shorter time between the midpoint of the period of substantial exposure and diagnosis among the cases. Furthermore, rs1800797 was also associated with lung cancer among never smokers in the GENEVA dataset. Functional studies identified that the risk allele was associated with increased basal IL-6 mRNA level and greater promoter activity. Furthermore, fibroblasts with the risk allele showed greater induction of IL-6 secretion by hydrogen peroxide or benzoapyrene diolepoxide treatments.
An IL6 promoter variant was associated with lung cancer in uranium miners and never smokers in two external study populations. The associations are strongly supported by the functional relevance that the IL6 promoter SNP affects basal expression and carcinogen-induced IL-6 secretion.

Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife can threaten vulnerable host populations. Actions targeting habitat improvements to aid population resilience and recovery may be beneficial long‐term ...strategies, yet testing the efficacy of such strategies before major conservation investments are made can be challenging.
The disease white‐nose syndrome (WNS) has caused severe declines in several species of North American hibernating bats. We tested a novel conservation approach targeted at improving foraging conditions near bat hibernacula by experimentally manipulating insect density in the pre‐hibernation fattening period and spring emergence recovery period. We measured foraging (feeding buzzes) and echolocation activity of little brown bats Myotis lucifugus at ultraviolet (UV) light lures to determine behavioural response to augmented foraging conditions and characterized insect availability at UV light lures.
In the fall, bat foraging activity was three times greater (95% CI: 1.5–5.8; p = 0.002) when UV lights were on, but there was no statistical support for differences in echolocation activity response when our experimental design alternated between nights with lights on and off. In the spring, we allowed UV light lures to run consistently each night and compared with a control location in similar habitat. Bat foraging activity was 8.5 times greater (95% CI: 4.5–16.0; p < 0.0001) and echolocation activity was 4.4 times higher (95% CI: 3.0–6.5; p < 0.0001) at UV light lures in the spring experiment. In both the fall and spring, UV light lures resulted in concentrated insect availability, attracting primarily moths (Order: Lepidoptera). In both seasons, nightly temperature had a strong influence on bat foraging, echolocation and insect activity.
We show that a bat species threatened by WNS used enhanced foraging habitats near hibernacula during the critical pre‐ and post‐hibernation phases of their annual cycle. While light lures are unlikely to be a long‐term management strategy, our experiment provides initial evidence that bats behaviourally respond with increased foraging activity in areas with augmented insect prey availability. Our experimental results support developing management strategies focused on habitat protection, including restoration and enhancement of foraging habitats, in the immediate vicinity of bat hibernacula.
Bat species threatened by the fungal disease white‐nose syndrome (WNS) used enhanced foraging habitats near their hibernacula during pre‐ and post‐hibernation phases of their annual cycle. Using ultraviolet light lures, we show that bats behaviourally respond by increasing foraging activity in areas with augmented insect prey availability. Management strategies to protect and enhance foraging habitats in the immediate vicinity of bat hibernacula may benefit hibernating bats vulnerable to WNS.
We demonstrate microchip nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis (μNACE) analysis of primary aliphatic amines (C1–C18) in ethanol down to −20 °C as a first step in adapting microfluidic protocols for in ...situ analysis on Titan. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a nonaqueous separation at −20 °C on-chip. Limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 1.0 nM to 2.6 nM, and we identified several primary amines ranging in length from C2 to C16 in Titan aerosol analogue (tholin) samples; new amines were also detected in a tholin sample exposed to oxygen and liquid water. This preliminary work validates the sensitivity and efficacy of microfluidic chemical analysis of complex organics with relevance to Titan aerosols and surface deposits.
