Experts in biomedical and health informatics (BMHI) are desperately sought throughout Europe. In Germany, for example, the shortage of young professionals is currently being drastically exacerbated ...by major government projects (Medical Informatics Initiative) and funding for the digitalization of medicine. To train the next generation, there are numerous study programs in Europe at bachelor, master and doctoral level, some of which have been compiled in a database by the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI); four new BMHI study programs in Austria, Montenegro, Portugal and the UK have been accredited by the EFMI1. In principle, the EU's Bologna regulations support the mobility of students across the EU, both to gain experience abroad and to take advantage of educational opportunities that are useful and necessary to achieve one's career goals. However, it is a challenge to find the programs that match the individual career and learning goals of (prospective) students in the Europe-wide offer of study programs and courses. Similar to the FAIR principles for data sharing, it is also necessary that educational offers are (F) findable, but also (A) accessible, (I) interoperable and (R) reusable. Own projects that use ontologies to ensure clear terminology in BMHI (SNIK2, HITO3) and can provide catalogues of learning objectives (HI-LONa4), activities of professional societies such as the German GMDS to define catalogues of learning objectives in all areas of BMHI5, international and Romanian projects for a Medical Informatics and Digital Health Multilingual Ontology (MIMO)6, the EU project HosmartAI7 in which EFMI promotes education and FAIRness, and the EFMI Accreditation and Certification Committee contribute in different ways to FAIRness in educational offerings. However, further efforts are needed to achieve real FAIRness in BMHI training provision, which EFMI is well placed to coordinate.

Um die Ziele der Medizininformatik-Initiative (MII) erreichen zu können, wird Personal mit Kompetenzen im Bereich der medizinischen Informatik und Datenwissenschaften benötigt. Um ...diese Kompetenzen zu fördern, wurden in jedem Konsortium Ausbildungsaktivitäten etabliert. Zudem wurden konsortiumübergreifende Aktivitäten etabliert. Dieser Artikel berichtet über die Konzepte, umgesetzte Programme und Erfahrungen. Es sind 51 neue Professuren und 10 neue Studienangebote eingerichtet worden: 1 Bachelor-, 6 konsekutive und 3 berufsbegleitende Masterstudiengänge. Die entwickelten Lern- und Fortbildungsangebote stehen standortübergreifend zur Verfügung. Darüber hinaus wurden Zertifizierungs- und Anerkennungsmöglichkeiten geschaffen.
Die Lehrangebote richten sich an Zielgruppen mit fachlichem Hintergrund in Informatik, Medizin, Pflege, Bioinformatik, Biologie, Natur- und Datenwissenschaften. Zusatzqualifikationen für Ärzt*innen in Informatik und für Informatiker*innen in Medizin erweisen sich als besonders wichtig. Sie können zu einer höheren Qualität bei der Softwareentwicklung und einer besseren Unterstützung der Behandlungsprozesse durch Anwendungssysteme beitragen.
In allen Konsortien waren digitale Lernmethoden wichtig. Sie bieten Flexibilität, um standortübergreifend und interprofessionell auszubilden. So können ein Lernen in individuellem Tempo und ein Austausch unter Berufsgruppen erreicht werden. Der Erfolg der MII hängt wesentlich von der gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanz der Mehrfachnutzung medizinischer Daten in Versorgung und Forschung ab. Die dafür erforderlichen Informationen werden durch die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit der MII bereitgestellt. In der Gesellschaft besteht ein enormer Bedarf an Kompetenz im Umgang mit medizinischen Daten und digitalen Werkzeugen.
The European Federation for Medical Informatics Association (EFMI) is the leading organisation in medical informatics in Europe and represents 29 countries, RSMI being an active and valuable member. ...EFMI is organized as a nonprofit organisation concerned with the theory and practice of Information Science and Technology within Health and Health Science in a European context. The objectives when founded in 1976 were: to advance international cooperation and dissemination of information in Medical Informatics on a European basis; to promote high standards in the application of medical informatics; to promote research and development in medical informatics; to encourage high standards in education in medical informatics; to function as the autonomous European Regional Council of IMIA. Since 2018 EFMI participates actively in European financed projects contributing with its members' expertise in dissemination, education, data processing, user experience, and several other domains. HosmartAI (2020-2024) is a H2020 project with 24 partners, 12 EU countries, 10 mil Euros funding. In the HosmartAI project - AI for the Smart Hospital of the future - EFMI is leading in WP6 the T6.3 task - Standardization and Legislation, T6.4 task - Certification, Staff training & education and alignment with existing practice and had a consistent contribution in WP2 with EFMI MIMO tool. The EFMI team will present the solutions developed during the project and invite audience to give feedback.
The human-induced climate crisis endangers health and the foundations of life for us humans. The professional society GMDS – German Assocation for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology – ...considers itself responsible for the health in society. What does this mean in times of the climate crisis? During a workshop entitled “Climate change, digitalization and health“ at GMDS2023 in Heilbronn, action areas for GMDS as a professional society and for its members were discussed. On the micro level, for example, the necessity, the anticipated benefits for human health, and the climate consequences of planned projects should be reflected upon. On the meso level, GMDS-organized events could be made climate-neutral, for example. On the macro level, GMDS could, for example, influence funding bodies to consider climate consequences in decisions regarding research proposals. We invite everyone interested to actively participate in the planned further discussions. The establishment of a GMDS project group or working group on this topic is planned. Now is the time to take responsibility for the climate. This applies at the professional level for us personally as well as for the professional society GMDS as an institution.
Smartphones and related applications are increasingly gaining relevance in the healthcare domain. We previously assessed the demands and preferences of medical students towards an application ...accompanying them during a course on general practice. The current study aims to elucidate the factors associated with adoption of such a technology. Therefore we provided students with a prototype of an application specifically related to their studies in general practice.
A total estimation among students participating in a general practice examination at the Leipzig Medical School was conducted in May 2014. Students were asked to answer a structured self-designed questionnaire. Univariable comparisons were made to identify significant differences between those students who reported to have used the application frequently and those who did not. Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to reveal independent predictors of frequent application usage.
The response rate was 99.3 % (n = 305/307). The majority (59 %, n = 180/305) were female students. The mean age was 24.5 years and 79.9 % (n = 243/304) owned a smartphone or tablet computer. Regarding the usage of the provided application, 2.3 % (n = 7/303) did not use the app while 68.0 % (n = 206/303) replied to have used it more than five times. Frequent users significantly differed from non-frequent users with regard to being female rather than male, higher mobile device ownership, more frequent exchange about obtaining the course certificate, higher personal interest in new technologies, larger enjoyment of the technology, lower intention to not use smartphone applications in the future, better opinion towards smartphone applications for the profession of a doctor, higher perceived importance of medical applications on the job, higher compatibility of smartphone applications with personal work style, higher perceived relevance of university support and personal benefit of use. Multivariable analysis revealed a set of four variables independently predicting frequent usage: being female, a higher perceived benefit of the supplied application, a higher personal interest in new technologies, and a higher perceived impact of previous experiences on smartphone adoption (Pseudo-R(2)(Nagelkerke) = 0.245).
Understanding medical students' adoption of smartphone applications used for educational purposes may provide useful information to guide the implementation process as well as the design of respective applications.

In order to achieve the goals of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), staff with skills in the field of medical informatics and data science are required. Each consortium has established ...training activities. Further, cross-consortium activities have emerged. This article describes the concepts, implemented programs, and experiences in the consortia. Fifty-one new professorships have been established and 10 new study programs have been created: 1 bachelor's degree and 6 consecutive and 3 part-time master's degree programs. Further, learning and training opportunities can be used by all MII partners. Certification and recognition opportunities have been created.The educational offers are aimed at target groups with a background in computer science, medicine, nursing, bioinformatics, biology, natural science, and data science. Additional qualifications for physicians in computer science and computer scientists in medicine seem to be particularly important. They can lead to higher quality in software development and better support for treatment processes by application systems.Digital learning methods were important in all consortia. They offer flexibility for cross-location and interprofessional training. This enables learning at an individual pace and an exchange between professional groups.The success of the MII depends largely on society's acceptance of the multiple use of medical data in both healthcare and research. The information required for this is provided by the MII's public relations work. There is also an enormous need in society for medical and digital literacy.
