The 4th edition of the World Health Organization’s Classification of Head and Neck Tumours was published in January of 2017. This article provides a summary of the changes to Chapter 4 Tumours of the ...oral cavity and mobile tongue and Chapter 8 Odontogenic and maxillofacial bone tumours. Odontogenic cysts which were eliminated from the 3rd 2005 edition were included in the 4th edition as well as other unique allied conditons of the jaws. Many new tumors published since 2005 have been included in the 2017 classification.

edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours (2022) comes out only five years after the previous edition, however it presents important updates that ...run in parallel with the rapid progression involving the increasingly sophisticated molecular investigation and its interpretation, some of which already have therapy-related impact. This manuscript provides an overview of the leading changes introduced in the classification of Odontogenic and Maxillofacial Bone Tumours that encompasses cysts of the jaws, odontogenic tumours, giant cell lesions and bone cysts, and bone and cartilage tumours. This is the first edition that Essential and Desirable Diagnostic Features were added for each entity, so that the most important clinical, microscopic and/or radiologic features were encapsulated and briefly highlighted. Surgical ciliated cyst was added to the group of odontogenic cysts, adenoid ameloblastoma was a newly recognized benign epithelial odontogenic tumour, and segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia was introduced in the group of fibro-osseous tumours and dysplasia. In addition, rhabdomyosarcoma with
TFCP2
rearrangement, was introduced into the group of malignant jawbone tumours. The unique genetic aberrations distinguish it from other types of rhabdomyosarcomas. On the other hand, melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy and osteoid osteoma were deleted from the benign bone and cartilageneous tumours, as was the hematolymphoid tumour of solitary plasmacytoma of bone. We systematically reviewed each entity in this chapter and provided important updated findings for selected topics that can further aid in the diagnostic process for challenging cases, broaden insights on the logic of the present classification, and finally, emphasize the potential that some of the molecular results may have in the near future to set new treatment approaches.
Mobility impairment is common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and there is a need to assess mobility in remote settings. Here, we apply a novel wireless, skin-mounted, and conformal inertial ...sensor (BioStampRC, MC10 Inc.) to examine gait characteristics of PwMS under controlled conditions. We determine the accuracy and precision of BioStampRC in measuring gait kinematics by comparing to contemporary research-grade measurement devices.
A total of 45 PwMS, who presented with diverse walking impairment (Mild MS = 15, Moderate MS = 15, Severe MS = 15), and 15 healthy control subjects participated in the study. Participants completed a series of clinical walking tests. During the tests participants were instrumented with BioStampRC and MTx (Xsens, Inc.) sensors on their shanks, as well as an activity monitor GT3X (Actigraph, Inc.) on their non-dominant hip. Shank angular velocity was simultaneously measured with the inertial sensors. Step number and temporal gait parameters were calculated from the data recorded by each sensor. Visual inspection and the MTx served as the reference standards for computing the step number and temporal parameters, respectively. Accuracy (error) and precision (variance of error) was assessed based on absolute and relative metrics. Temporal parameters were compared across groups using ANOVA.
Mean accuracy±precision for the BioStampRC was 2±2 steps error for step number, 6±9ms error for stride time and 6±7ms error for step time (0.6-2.6% relative error). Swing time had the least accuracy±precision (25±19ms error, 5±4% relative error) among the parameters. GT3X had the least accuracy±precision (8±14% relative error) in step number estimate among the devices. Both MTx and BioStampRC detected significantly distinct gait characteristics between PwMS with different disability levels (p<0.01).
BioStampRC sensors accurately and precisely measure gait parameters in PwMS across diverse walking impairment levels and detected differences in gait characteristics by disability level in PwMS. This technology has the potential to provide granular monitoring of gait both inside and outside the clinic.
Circadian rhythms are fundamental properties of most eukaryotes, but evidence of biological clocks that drive these rhythms in prokaryotes has been restricted to Cyanobacteria. In vertebrates, the ...gastrointestinal system expresses circadian patterns of gene expression, motility and secretion in vivo and in vitro, and recent studies suggest that the enteric microbiome is regulated by the host's circadian clock. However, it is not clear how the host's clock regulates the microbiome. Here, we demonstrate at least one species of commensal bacterium from the human gastrointestinal system, Enterobacter aerogenes, is sensitive to the neurohormone melatonin, which is secreted into the gastrointestinal lumen, and expresses circadian patterns of swarming and motility. Melatonin specifically increases the magnitude of swarming in cultures of E. aerogenes, but not in Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae. The swarming appears to occur daily, and transformation of E. aerogenes with a flagellar motor-protein driven lux plasmid confirms a temperature-compensated circadian rhythm of luciferase activity, which is synchronized in the presence of melatonin. Altogether, these data demonstrate a circadian clock in a non-cyanobacterial prokaryote and suggest the human circadian system may regulate its microbiome through the entrainment of bacterial clocks.

Sensor accuracy, system ruggedness, and large-scale deployment in remote environments represent key opportunity areas, enabling broad deployment in the context of field studies, clinical trials, and recent commercialization. On-body measurements in these contexts show good agreement compared to conventional laboratory-based sweat analysis approaches. These device demonstrations highlight the utility of biochemical sensing platforms for personalized assessment of performance, wellness, and health across a broad range of applications.
Gait speed is a powerful clinical marker for mobility impairment in patients suffering from neurological disorders. However, assessment of gait speed in coordination with delivery of comprehensive ...care is usually constrained to clinical environments and is often limited due to mounting demands on the availability of trained clinical staff. These limitations in assessment design could give rise to poor ecological validity and limited ability to tailor interventions to individual patients. Recent advances in wearable sensor technologies have fostered the development of new methods for monitoring parameters that characterize mobility impairment, such as gait speed, outside the clinic, and therefore address many of the limitations associated with clinical assessments. However, these methods are often validated using normal gait patterns; and extending their utility to subjects with gait impairments continues to be a challenge. In this paper, we present a machine learning method for estimating gait speed using a configurable array of skin-mounted, conformal accelerometers. We establish the accuracy of this technique on treadmill walking data from subjects with normal gait patterns and subjects with multiple sclerosis-induced gait impairments. For subjects with normal gait, the best performing model systematically overestimates speed by only 0.01 m/s, detects changes in speed to within less than 1%, and achieves a root-mean-square-error of 0.12 m/s. Extending these models trained on normal gait to subjects with gait impairments yields only minor changes in model performance. For example, for subjects with gait impairments, the best performing model systematically overestimates speed by 0.01 m/s, quantifies changes in speed to within 1%, and achieves a root-mean-square-error of 0.14 m/s. Additional analyses demonstrate that there is no correlation between gait speed estimation error and impairment severity, and that the estimated speeds maintain the clinical significance of ground truth speed in this population. These results support the use of wearable accelerometer arrays for estimating walking speed in normal subjects and their extension to MS patient cohorts with gait impairment.
The facile chemical transformation of metal halide perovskites via ion exchange has been attributed to their “soft” crystal lattices that enable fast ion migration. Kinetic studies of such processes ...could provide mechanistic insights on the ion migration dynamics. Herein, by using aligned single-crystal nanowires of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite on epitaxial substrates as platforms, we visualize and investigate the cation or anion interdiffusion kinetics via spatially resolved photoluminescence measurement on heterostructures fabricated by stacking CsPbCl3, MAPbI3, or MAPbBr3 microplates on top of CsPbBr3 nanowires. Time-dependent confocal photoluminescence microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the solid-state anion interdiffusion readily occurs to result in halide concentration gradients along CsPbBr3–3x Cl3x (x = 0–1) nanowires. Quantitative analysis of such composition profiles using Fick’s law allowed us, for the first time, to extract interdiffusion coefficients of the chloride-bromide couple and an activation energy of 0.44 ± 0.02 eV for ion diffusion from temperature-dependent studies. In contrast, iodide-bromide interdiffusion is limited, likely due to the complex phase behaviors of mixed alloys of CsPb(Br,I)3. In contrast to the relatively mobile anions, A-site cation interdiffusion across the MAPbBr3/CsPbBr3 junctions was barely observed at room temperature. Our results present a general method to investigate the kinetics of the solid-state ion migration, and the gained insights on ion diffusion can provide guidelines for rationally designing perovskite heterostructures that could lead to new properties for fundamental studies and technological applications.
This article calls into question the conventional wisdom that incumbent parties are rewarded when unemployment is low and punished when it is high. Using county-level data on unemployment and ...election returns for 175 midterm gubernatorial elections and 4 presidential elections from 1994 to 2010, the analysis finds that unemployment and the Democratic vote for president and governor move together. Other things being equal, higher unemployment increases the vote shares of Democratic candidates. The effect is greatest when Republicans are the incumbent party, but Democrats benefit from unemployment even when they are in control. The explanation for these findings is that unemployment is a partisan issue for voters, not a valence issue, and that the Democratic Party “owns” unemployment. When unemployment is high or rising, Democratic candidates can successfully convince voters that they are the party best able to solve the problem.
The invention of the laser generated great excitement, because its ability to create quantum state coherences could form a new family of coherent spectroscopies that were the optical analogue of ...multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The full realization of this promise has not yet been realized, but the pathway forward is clear. The path involves the use of multiple, tunable lasers that create a Schrödinger cat state, where the system is simultaneously in a mixture of vibrational and/or electronic states. The multiplicity of these states confers many advantages for analytical methods: high selectivity from the multiple spectral dimensions, line-narrowing, isolation of spectral features where quantum states are coupled, and spectral decongestion. Now that the feasibility of Schrödinger cat spectroscopy has been demonstrated, the future is open for the development of a new frontier in analytical chemistry that creates a new set of tools for studying the complex systems that form the heart of analytical chemistry.
This study was conducted in order to map European research in chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs). It was intended to assist the European Commission and other research funders to identify gaps and ...overlaps in their portfolios, and to suggest ways in which they could improve the effectiveness of their support and increase the impact of the research on patient care and on the reduction of the incidence of the CRDs. Articles and reviews were identified in the Web of Science on research in six non-communicable respiratory diseases that were published in 2002-13 from 31 European countries. They represented only 0.8% of biomedical research output but these diseases accounted for 4.7% of the European disease burden, as measured by Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), so the sub-field is seriously under-researched. Europe is prominent in the sub-field and published 56% of the world total, with the UK the most productive and publishing more than France and Italy, the next two countries, combined. Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) were the diseases with the most publications and the highest citation rates. They also received the most funding, with around two acknowledgments per paper (in 2009-13), whereas cystic fibrosis and emphysema averaged only one. Just over 37% of papers had no specific funding and depended on institutional support from universities and hospitals.
