Objective: Hemostatic disorders are common complications in sepsis, and coagulation abnormalities occur in almost all the septic patients. Thrombocytes have a key role in the pathogenesis of ...coagulation abnormalities in sepsis. This study aimed to investigate thrombocyte function disorders as a likely cause of hemorrhagic diathesis in patients with neonatal sepsis.
Material and methods: The study included 70 septic newborns (sepsis group) and 59 healthy newborns (control group). Blood samples were collected from the patients within the first 24 h of hospitalization. Thrombocyte aggregation and secretion tests were performed by optical aggregometry and lumi-aggregometry, respectively. Collagen (2 μg/mL), epinephrine (5 μM), standard (5 μM) and high (10 μM) doses of adenosine diphosphate (ADP), standard (1 unit) and high (4 units) doses of thrombin, ristocetin (1.25 mg/mL) and arachidonic acid (0.5 mM) were used as the agonists.
Results: The mean age of the septic newborns was significantly higher than that of the controls (6.78 ± 14.47 days versus 1.25 ± 1.17, p < 0.001). There was no difference between the groups regarding gender- and birth-related characteristics. No difference was observed between the groups regarding platelet count (293.37 ± 144.48 × 10

Platelet secretion induced by collagen, epinephrine, standard and high (10 μM) doses of ADP, or arachidonic acid and platelet aggregation induced by collagen, high-dose ADP, arachidonic acid, ristocetin or thrombin (1 unit) were significantly higher in the sepsis group than in the control group.
Conclusion: Based on the results, we concluded that large-scale studies with recurrent tests performed in different periods of sepsis are needed.
Levels of insulin-like growth factor-I are characteristically low in Laron syndrome which is a factor that has important roles on vascular health and development. Congenital insulin-like growth ...factor-I deficiency was reported to be associated with some vascular disorders. However, vasculitis diseases and Laron Syndrome association has not been reported in English literature up to date.
We report the case of a two and a half years old Turkish girl, who was diagnosed as Laron syndrome when she was 12 months old. She presented with acute vasculitis lesions. Her physical examination and laboratory studies did not reveal a specific infectious agent or also an autoimmune disease was not detected. Her lesions disappeared during hospitalization without a complication.
Since insulin-like growth factor-I reduces endothelial cell oxidative stress and maintains the structural integrity of vessels, some common mechanisms might be responsible for the occurrence of vasculitis in this patient with Laron syndome. The role of insulin-like growth factor-I and recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-I treatment choice in vasculitis diseases is a matter of investigation.
Amaç: Bu çalışma, annelerin D vitamini hakkındaki bilgileri ve D vitamini kullanma tutumlarının değerlendirilmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma hastanesi sağlam ...çocuk polikliniğine Mart 2013-Nisan 2014 tarihleri arasında başvuran ve 0-3 yaş arasında çocuğu olan 476 anne çalışmaya alınmıştır. Yüz yüze anket metodu yöntemi kullanarak anneye ait sosyodemografik özellikler, D vitamini hakkındaki bilgileri ve kullanma tutumlarına ait sorular sorularak veriler toplandı. Veriler; sayı, yüzde ve Ki-Kare analizleriyle değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Annelerin %31.7'si 25-33 yaş aralığında, %31.7'si ilkokul mezunu idi. İlk altı ay sadece anne sütü verenlerin oranı %18.4 idi. Annelerin tamamı günde üç damla D vitamini kullanmaları gerektiği bilgisine sahip idi. Çocuklarına düzenli D vitamini veren annelerin oranı %67.2 idi. Annelerin eğitim durumları ile D vitaminin düzenli kullanma tutumları arasında fark saptanmadı (p>0.05). Gebelik döneminde D vitamini kullandıklarını ifade eden annelerin oranı %56.0 idi. Annelerin %49.2'si ıspanağın D vitamininde zengin besin olduğunu, %61.12'i fazla D vitamini verilmesi halinde “bıngıldağın erken kapanacağını” düşünmekte idi. Annelerin tamamı güneş ışığının kemik gelişimine faydalı olduğu bilgisine sahipti. Sonuç: Annelerin D vitaminini kullanma tutumları olumludur. Annelerin gebelikleri ve emzirme döneminde D vitamini kullanma bilgileri ve tutumları eksiktir. D vitamini kullanma süresi, D vitamini kaynaklarına dair bilgileri yeterli değildir.
Objective: This study was conducted in order to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of mothers about vitamin D supplementation. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among 476 mothers with 0-3 years old children who attended the Ankara Training and Research Hospital Child Health Polyclinic between March 2013 and April 2014. Using the face to face questionnaire method, mothers were asked about their socio-demographic characteristics and their knowledge, attitude and practice about vitamin D supplementation. Results: 31.7% of the mothers were between the ages of 25-33 years, 31.7% them were primary school graduates. 18.4% of the mothers gave breast milk during the first six months. All mothers knew that they should use 3 drops of vitamin D every day. A total of 67.2% of the mothers regularly supplemented their children with vitamin D and 49.2% of them thought that spinach was vitamin D rich food. All mothers thought that sunlight was good for bone development and according to 61.12% of them, more vitamin D consumption would provide earlier closure of the anterior fontanel. Conclusion: The attitude of the mothers regarding vitamin D usage is favorable. But their knowledge and attitude about vitamin D usage during pregnancy and lactation period is inadequate. Their knowledge about the sources for vitamin D and the duration of vitamin D usage are also inadequate.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NYS) is a clinical condition characterized by physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms after prenatal exposure to addictive substances. These symptoms are ...self-limiting and usually do not require pharmacological treatment for all classes of drugs, except for opioids. In developed countries 4.4 % of pregnant women use illegal drugs. Heroin exposure during pregnancy causes prematurity, unexplained intrauterine growth restriction, placental insufficiency, postpartum hemorrhage, including pre-eclampsia and premature rupture of membranes which is associated with fetal death and neonatal morbidity. In our country, there are a very limited number of case reports about babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
Neonatal yoksunluk sendromu (NYS) prenatal bağımlılık yapan maddelere maruziyet sonrası çekilme semptomlarıyla ve fiziksel bağımlılıkla karakterize klinik bir durumdur. Opioid dışındaki tüm ilaç sınıfları için bu belirtiler genellikle kendi kendini sınırlar ve farmakolojik tedavi gerektirmez. Gelişmiş ülkelerde hamile kadınların %4.4'ü yasadışı ilaç kullanmaktadır. Gebelik boyunca eroine maruziyet prematürite, açıklanamayan intrauterin gelişme geriliği, plasenta yetmezliği, doğum sonrası kanama, preeklampsi ve erken membran rüptürü de dahil olmak üzere fetal ölüm ve neonatal morbidite ile ilişkilidir. Ülkemizde neonatal yoksunluk sendromu ile doğan bebeklerle ilgili oldukça sınırlı sayıda olgu sunumu yapılmıştır.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is an important health problem that may lead to deaths during winters. The purpose of this study was to patients who were diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods ...196 patients between 0–17 years of age, who were treated at the Ankara Education and Research Hospital Child Emergency Service for the carbon monoxide poisoning diagnosis between November 2011 and April 2012 were evaluated. Patients’ complaints, socio-demographic data, biochemical parameters were recorded. Findings The age median of the patients was 10.0 while 51.5% were female. The most frequent complaint was: nausea, vomiting (27.6%). Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) level average was 25.5±10.3 (5.1–61). Serum lactate median was 2.1 (0.1–11.2). Neurological findings were determined in 22.4% of the patients. Normobaric oxygen treatment was given to 75.5% of the patients, while 24.5% were given hyperbaric oxygen treatment. A positive correlation was determined between Lactate and COHb levels (P= 0.01, r= 0.228). A negative correlation was determined between Glaskow Coma Scale and COHb levels (p=0.01, r= –0.383). Patients with neurological findings had an average COHb level at 35.7% ±16, patients without neurological findings had an average COHb level at 22.5% ±7.7 (p=0.001). Blood lactate level was higher in patients with neurological findings than patients without neurological findings (p= 0.01). Results COHb level in carbon monoxide poisoning cases is an important indicator for the existence of neurological findings. Since increase in lactate is correlated with the poisoning level and neurological findings, high lactate levels should be taken into consideration.
