This contribution reports recent investigations on low-energy scaling properties of three-body systems, by considering elastic s-wave collisions of a particle in a bound-state formed by the remaining ...two-body system. First, some previous results for the case of the halo nucleus 20C will be revised, for the neutron-19C scattering properties near the critical condition for the occurrence of an excited bound state in 20C, within a neutron-neutron-18C configuration. In our approach, we consider the Faddeev formalism with renormalized zero-range two-body interactions. Next, by considering the actual possibilities for verification of low-energy scaling properties in cold-atom laboratories, the approach is extended to atomic strongly-mass-imbalanced three-body systems, with two identical heavy particles and a light one. In this case, we consider that the heavy particle is being scattered by the light-heavy weakly-bound dimer. Our preliminary results for scattering observable are evidencing the universal scaling features.
Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscle disease, which is caused by the abnormality of dystrophin. Spina bifida is characterized by paralysis of the feet, with most of the upper ...extremities not being affected. We report here on the first case of Becker muscular dystrophy coinciding with spina bifida. The muscle biopsy specimens of the patient showed dystrophic changes in upper extremities, but clearly less in lower extremities. The results show that the restriction of excessive exercise is important for dystrophin deficiency disease.
The dependence of the oxygen potentials (g(O2)) on oxygen non-stoichiometry (y) and temperature (T) of oxygen-deficient fluorite-type (F-type) plutonium zirconate Zr0.5Pu0.5O2-y has been elucidated ...by electromotive force (EMF) measurements: (Pt) air |Zr(Ca)O2-x| Zr0.5Pu0.5O2-y (Pt). The y value of Zr0.5Pu0.5O2-y was varied at 1078 K over 0 < or = y < 0.10 and the isothermal g(O2) were measured by applying the coulomb titration method. The temperature dependence of the g(O2) was also measured for each y by performing the temperature scan down to 793 K (793 < or = T < or = 1078 K). It was found that the g(O2) decreased from ~0 to -480 kJ/mol with increasing y from ~0 to 0.1 at 1078 K and that the isothermal g(O2) as a function of y exhibited a simple concave curve. The powder XRD results showed that Zr0.5Pu0.5O2-y maintained its single F-type structure over 0 < or = y < 0.10 at 1078 K. The lattice parameters (a0) in this system were found to increase almost linearly with y over 0 < or = y < 0.10.
Highly c-axis orientated YBa2Cu3O7–x films were prepared on LaAlO3 single crystal substrates via metal–organic deposition using trifluoroacetates using ethanol as solvent instead of the toxic ...methanol. The onset transition temperature is 91K and the critical current density under self field is over 1MA/cm2 at 77K, which indicates ethanol can be used as solvent for high-quality YBCO films using TFA–MOD.
Pure (00l)-textured CeO2 buffer layers were deposited on single crystal r-plane Al2O3 (1–102) substrate by a hybrid process which was combined with magnetron sputtering for the seed layer and ...metal–organic deposition for the subsequent layer. Strongly c-axis oriented YBCO films were deposited on the CeO2 buffered r-cut Al2O3 (1–102) substrates. Atomic force microscope and scanning electronic microscopy results show that the prepared buffers and YBCO films are relatively dense and smooth. The critical current of the YBCO films exceeds 1.5MA/cm2 at 77K with the superconducting transition temperature of 90K. The surface resistivity is as below as 14μΩ at 1GHz frequency. The results demonstrate that the hybrid route is a very promising method to prepare YBCO films for microwave application, which can combine the sputtering advantage for preparing of highly c-axis oriented CeO2 buffer layers and the advantages of metal–organic deposition with rapid processing, low cost and easy preparation of large-area YBCO films.
Real‐time dose monitoring is important to improve the accuracy of prostate permanent implant brachytherapy (PI). However, few data about in vivo dosimetry in PI have been reported because dosimetry ...of low energy photons from I‐125 sources is challenging. The purpose of this study is to estimate the dosimetric uncertainty in I‐125 permanent implant brachytherapy using 5‐linear array MOSFET. We evaluated the physical characteristics including angular response variability, linearity, calibration factor, and detector response variability for photon beams from I‐125 seed. All experiments were performed using I‐125 seeds to eliminate the energy dependence. Furthermore phantom study was performed to estimate the dosimetric uncertainty in preclinical settings. For isotropic analysis, the response of 270 and 90 degrees were 8 to 15 % lower than 0 degree and in another angle, the differences of responses were within 5%. However, the deviation of each angle was within 6%. The linearity of the readings is excellent (R2=0.098). The fading effect of MOSFET was not observed. Calibration factor was obtained with the standard deviation within 4%. We found that calibration factor was changed by seed‐detector distance (SDD) by 10% in shorter distance (5mm and 7mm) and 4% in greater distance compared with SDD 10mm. The same tendency was observed by Monte Carlo Simulation. Monte Carlo simulation showed that the beam hardening effect occurred as the SDD increased, which can increase additional deviation. In phantom study, treatment planning was performed with 47 seeds in a modified peripheral loading manner. We measured the urethral dose at base, midland, and apex positions during 20 minutes. In mid grand and base regions, measure dose agreed within 6% and in apex region less than 15% differences were observed. These data suggest that in vivo dosimetry in permanent implant brachytherapy with the appropriate correction can be performed within 15%.
In July 2000, a new automatic gauge control (AGC) system was successfully installed at the Kakogawa Works, Kobe Steel, Ltd., Hyogo, Japan. The new AGC system consists of two functions: multivariable ...AGC based on mass flow thickness; and roll eccentricity control. The multivariable AGC is designed using inverse linear quadratic theory, a type of optimal control theory, and controls both thickness and tension. Repetitive control theory is applied to roll eccentricity control as roll eccentricity is a periodic disturbance related to the rotational angle of the rolls. The new AGC system has contributed to improved thickness accuracy and stable rolling. In this paper, details of the new AGC system are described and the application results are shown.
Ammonia radicals are produced by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in a chamber separate from the chamber that NO gas flows, and are injected in the NO gas flowing field to decompose NO gas. The ...power source for generating the DBD is a one-cycle sinusoidal (OCS) waveform so as to easily control the power consumed in the DBD plasma. The fundamental frequency of the OCS power source is 150 kHz. The correlation of the DeNOx characteristics was discussed, where the residence time of the ammonia gas in the radical injector and the power density consumed in the DBD plasma were considered. Their product was called residence energy density (RED). It was confirmed that the parametric data of the DeNOx energy efficiency were clearly correlated by the RED. Currently, the energy efficiency of 250 g/kWh was attained at a NO gas temperature of 600/spl deg/C. In order to obtain a high-energy efficiency in this system, the suppression of the energy consumed in the DBD plasma is effective, and instead, the ammonia flow rate decreases, compensating the accepted energy of the ammonia particles by the residence in the radical injector.
To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of an i.v. preparation of BU (12.8 mg/kg), combined with CY (120 mg/kg), a prospective study was performed on 30 Japanese patients (median age, 30 years) with ...hematologic malignancies undergoing hematopoietic SCT (28 allogeneic transplants from an HLA-matched donor and 2 autologous transplants). There were no significant toxicities, and all but one patient showed evidence of granulocyte engraftment at a median of 14 days for allogeneic and 11 days for autologous transplantation. Grades II-IV acute and chronic GVHD occurred in 9 (9/27, 33%) and 16 patients (16/27, 59%), respectively. Non-relapse mortality at days 100 and 365 was 3 and 17%, respectively. The pharmacokinetics of i.v. BU showed close inter- and intrapatient consistency; the area under the plasma concentration-time curve of the first administration remained at less than 1500 micromol min/l in 27 of the 29 patients (93%), and between 900 and 1350 micromol min/l in 22 patients (73%). As all of the profiles overlap with data from non-Japanese patients, we conclude that racial factors may not seriously influence the bioactivity of i.v. BU.
G protein-coupled receptors identified so far are classified into at least three major families based on their amino acid sequences. For the family of receptors homologous to rhodopsin (family 1), ...the G protein activation mechanism has been investigated in detail, but much less for the receptors of other families. To functionally compare the G protein activation mechanism between rhodopsin and metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR), which belong to distinct families, we prepared a set of bovine rhodopsin mutants whose second or third cytoplasmic loop was replaced with either the second or third loop of Gi/Go- or Gq-coupled mGluR (mGluR6 or mGluR1). Among these mutants, the mutants in which the second or third loop was replaced with the corresponding loop of mGluR exhibited no G protein activation ability. In contrast, the mutant whose third loop was replaced with the second loop of Gi/Go-coupled mGluR6 efficiently activated Gi but not Gt: this activation profile is almost identical with those of the mutant rhodop-sins whose third loop was replaced with those of the Gi/Go-coupled receptors in family 1 Yamashita et al. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 34272-34279. The mutant whose third loop was replaced with the second loop of Gq-coupled mGluR1 partially retained the Gi coupling ability of rhodopsin, which is in contrast to the fact that all the rhodopsin mutants having the third loops of Gq-coupled receptors in family 1 exhibit no detectable Gi activation. These results strongly suggest that the molecular architectures of rhodopsin and mGluR are different, although the G protein activation mechanism involving the cyto-plasmic loops is common.
