Background/Aims: There has been debate on whether a sodium-restricted diet (SRD) should be used in cirrhotic patients with ascites in China in recent years. The purpose of this study was to compare ...the effect of sodium-restricted and unrestricted diets on plasma renin activity (PRA), renal blood flow (RBF) and ascites in patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods: Two hundred cirrhotic patients with ascites were randomly divided into two groups (98 cases in the sodium-unrestricted diet SUD group and 102 cases in the SRD group); 95 patients (96.94%) in the SUD group and 97 patients (95.1%) in the SRD group had post-hepatitis B cir-rhosis. Results: Blood sodium and RBF were higher in SUD group than in SRD group (p<0.001), while PRA were signifi-cantly lower in SUD group than the SRD group 10 days after treatment (p<0.001). Renal impairment caused by low blood sodium was higher in SRD group than in SUD group (p<0.01). Ascites disappeared in higher proportion of patients in SUD group than in SRD group (p<0.001). Conclusions: SUD can increase the level of blood sodium and RBF, and be benefi-cial to diuresis and ascite reduction and disappearance. (Gut Liver 2012;6:355-361)
Objective: To investigate the relationship between plasma EBV-DNA concentration and clinicopathologic features of Hodgkin's lymphoma cases. Methods: At first, the positive rate of plasma EBV-DNA was ...determined with a nested-PCR method using 45 specimens from Uygur HL patients, as well as 110 healthy people sampled as normal controls. Secondly, using fluorescent quantitative nested-PCR, EBV viral load was assessed in the EBV-DNA positive plasma samples. Then, relationships between plasma EBV viral load and clinicopathologic features of HL patients were analyzed. Results: The positive rate of plasma EBV-DNA of HL patients was significantly higher than that of normal controls (53.3% vs 26.4%, P=0.001). There was no significant difference about plasma EBV viral load between EBV-associated HL and EBV-DNA positive normal people (P=0.490). Looking at patients' characteristics, plasma EBV viral load in 10-20 years EBV-associated HL was higher than in EBV cases which were less than 10 years or more than 35 years (P=0.025). Furthermore, in EBV-associated HL, concentration of plasma EBV-DNA was significantly higher in advanced stage disease (stages III-IV; P=0.013), and with B-symptoms (P=0.020). Conclusion: EBV-DNA levels were associated with part of clinicopathologic features of cases. It was of practical use to screen HL. Further etiological studies appear warranted.
Ten compounds (1 - 10), palmitic acid (1), 10-nonacosanol (2), pentacosan-1-ol (3), phytol (4), ${\beta}$-sitosterol (5), ${\beta}$-sitosterol-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (6), ...2,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid (7), hyperoside (8), uridine (9) and adenosine (10), were isolated from the n-hexane and EtOAc-soluble fractions of the aerial parts of A. dioicus var. kamtschaticus (Rosaceae). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. All compounds (1 - 10) were isolated for the first time from this plant. Cytotoxicity of 1 - 10 against Jurkat T (T-lymphocytic leukemia cells), HeLa (Human cervical epitheloid carcinoma cells), MCF-7 (Human breast cancer cells), and HL-60 (Human promyelocytic leukemia cells) cell lines was measured. Compound 6 showed good cytotoxicity against HL-60 cell line with $IC_{50}$ value of 8.13 ${\mu}g/mL$. In addition, compounds 7 and 8 exhibited antioxidant activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 16.30 and 12.42 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively.
In this study, quantitative and pattern recognition analysis for the quality evaluation of Cinnamomi Ramulus and Cinnamomi Cortex using HPLC/UV was developed. For quantitative analysis, three major ...bioactive compounds were determined. The separation conditions employed for HPLC/UV were optimized using an ODS $C_{18}$ column ($250{\times}4.6$ mm, 5 ${\mu}m$) with gradient conditions of acetonitrile and water as the mobile phase, at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and a detection wavelength of 265 nm. This method was fully validated with respect to linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery, and robustness. The HPLC/UV method was applied successfully to the quantification of three major compounds in the extract of Cinnamomi Ramulus and Cinnamomi Cortex. The HPLC analytical method for pattern recognition analysis was validated by repeated analysis of thirty eight Cinnamomi Ramulus and thirty five Cinnamomi Cortex samples. The results indicate that the established HPLC/UV method is suitable for quantitative analysis.
The purpose of this study is to examine the reflection on violence necessary for Taekwondo leaders through the structure of violence and Johan Galtung's theory of peace, and to suggest alternatives ...to Taekwondo violence through Kant's categorical imperative. Through literature study, reflection and alternatives to Taekwondo (sexual) violence are suggested. The structure of violence in the Ttaekwondo field was reflected on the banality of evil suggested by Hannah Arendt, and the ‘Banality of Evil’ of (sexual) violence, an unethical act of the Taekwondo instructor, is the ability to think because it comes from ‘Sheer Thoughtlessness’.
and reflective thinking are required. Also, through the types of violence and the theory of peace of pacifist Johan Galtung, he emphasized the need for education on the prevention of violence by the state and taekwondo institutions in terms of social ethics as well as personal ethical efforts in the field of Taekwondo. As an alternative to (sexual) violence in the field of Taekwondo, the categorical imperative proposed by Kant was presented as the leader's practice code. He proposed that through the human nature formulation and universalization formulation, human beings are treated as ends rather than as means, and (gender) violence could be eradicated when the maxims of a leader's behavior are acted in accordance with universal laws. HMGN5 is a typical member of the HMGN (high mobility group nucleosome-binding protein) family which may function as a nucleosomal binding and transcriptional activating protein. Overexpression of ...HMGN5 has been observed in several human tumors but its role in tumorigenesis has not been fully clarified. To investigate its significance for human lung cancer progression, we successfully constructed a shRNA expression lentiviral vector in which sense and antisense sequences targeting the human HMGN5 were linked with a 9-nucleotide loop. Inhibitory effects of siRNA on endogenous HMGN5 gene expression and protein synthesis were demonstrated via real-time RT-PCR and western blotting. We found HMGN5 silencing to significantly inhibit A549 and H1299 cell proliferation assessed by MTT, BrdU incorporation and colony formation assays. Furthermore, flow cytometry analysis showed that specific knockdown of HMGN5 slowed down the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and decreased the populations of A549 and H1299 cells at the S and G2/M phases. Taken together, these results suggest that HMGN5 is directly involved in regulation cell proliferation in A549 and H1299 cells by influencing signaling pathways involved in cell cycle progression. Thus, our finding suggests that targeting HMGN5 may be an effective strategy for human lung cancer treatment.
We adopt the PASTEL catalog combined with SIMBAD radial velocities as a testing standard to validate the stellar parameters (effective temperature $T_{eff}$, surface gravity log g, metallicity Fe/H ...and radial velocity $V_r$) from the first data release (DR1) of The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. After applying data reduction and temperature constraints to the sample obtained by cross-identification, we compare the stellar parameters from DR1 and PASTEL. The results show that the DR1 results are reliable under certain conditions. We derive a dispersion of 110 K, 0.19 dex, 0.11 dex and $4.91kms^{-1}$ in specified effective temperature ranges, for $T_{eff}$, log g, Fe/H and $V_r$ respectively. Systematic errors are negligible except for those of $V_r$. In addition, for stars with PASTEL Fe/H < -1:5, the metallicities in DR1 are systematically higher than those in PASTEL.
The nitric oxide (NO) formation and intrinsic nitrosation may be involved in the possible mechanisms of liver fluke-associated carcinogenesis. We still do not know much about the responses of ...inducible NO synthase (iNOS) induced by Clonorchis sinensis infection. This study was conducted to explore the pathological lesions and iNOS expressions in the liver of mice with different infection intensity levels of C. sinensis. Extensive periductal inflammatory cell infiltration, bile duct hyperplasia, and fibrosis were commonly observed during the infection. The different pathological responses in liver tissues strongly correlated with the infection intensity of C. sinensis. Massive acute spotty necrosis occurred in the liver parenchyma after a severe infection. The iNOS activity in liver tissues increased, and iNOS-expressing cells with morphological differences were observed after a moderate or severe infection. The iNOS-expressing cells in liver tissues had multiple origins.
