Patients with DMD have demonstrated functional abnormalities in the motor-related brain areas in previous PET, MRS, and TMS studies. We applied structural MR imaging and RS-fMRI in patients with DMD ...for the first time, and aimed to investigate the GMC and ReHo or local synchronization of spontaneous activity in the motor cortex.
Ten boys with DMD (6.4-14.0 years of age) and 15 healthy controls (7.9-15.1 years of age) underwent brain structural MR imaging and RS-fMRI scanning. GMC and local synchronization of spontaneous activity in the motor cortex were analyzed by using VBM and ReHo approaches, respectively.
Compared with healthy controls, boys with DMD showed decreased GMC in the left PSMC and decreased ReHo in the bilateral PMSC as well as in the supplementary motor area (P < .05, corrected).
The current results indicate that boys with DMD have both GMC loss and decreased local synchronization of spontaneous activity in the motor cortex, which might be due to the deficiency of dystrophin in the brain.
Physical inactivity, a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is independently associated with stroke. Though some prior data have suggested sex differences in levels of physical ...activity, whether there are sex differences in the role of physical activity in primary stroke prevention is largely unknown. This systematic review identifies and describes recent findings on sex differences in the association between physical activity and incident (first-ever) stroke. This review also describes the current evidence on the strength of the association between physical activity and a reduced stroke risk in women in particular.
Using a prespecified strategy, PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Central were searched to identify observational studies or trials published from 2000 to 2020 and reporting sex differences in physical activity and incident stroke. To be included, among other criteria, studies had to include sex-specific effect estimates from women, men, or both. Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened to identify studies meeting the inclusion criteria, and adjusted sex-specific estimates of the association between physical activity and incident stroke for total stroke (ischemic plus hemorrhagic) or ischemic stroke were abstracted.
Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Of 17 studies that included data on total incident stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic combined) in both women and men, 7 (41%) showed similar associations between physical activity and incident stroke between women and men, 6 (35%) suggested a significant effect in women but not in men, and 3 (18%) showed a significant effect in men but not in women. Of 10 studies that included data on ischemic stroke in women and men, 5 (50%) suggested similar effects in women and men, 4 (40%) suggested a significant effect in women but not in men, and 1 (10%) showed an effect in men but not women. In women specifically, the majority of included studies demonstrated a reduced risk for incident stroke with physical activity, with relative risk reductions ranging from 11% to 72%, though most estimates fell between 20% and 40%.
The majority of studies indicated a clear association between physical activity and a reduction in stroke risk. Studies were split as to the potential for sex differences in this association. Future prospective investigations should identify strategies for the use of increased physical activity for primary stroke prevention, with sex-specific considerations as warranted. The data on sex-specific dose–response relationship between physical activity and stroke risk are inconclusive and warrant more research.

Sarcopenia, an age-related disease characterized by loss of muscle strength and muscle mass, has attracted the attention of medical experts due to its severe morbidity, low living quality, high ...expenditure of health care, and mortality. Traditionally, persistent aerobic exercise (PAE) is considered as a valid way to attenuate muscular atrophy. However, nowadays, high intensity interval training (HIIT) has emerged as a more effective and time-efficient method to replace traditional exercise modes. HIIT displays comprehensive effects on exercise capacity and skeletal muscle metabolism, and it provides a time-out for the recovery of cardiopulmonary and muscular functions without causing severe adverse effects. Studies demonstrated that compared with PAE, HIIT showed similar or even higher effects in improving muscle strength, enhancing physical performances and increasing muscle mass of elder people. Therefore, HIIT might become a promising way to cope with the age-related loss of muscle mass and muscle function. However, it is worth mentioning that no study of HIIT was conducted directly on sarcopenia patients, which is attributed to the suspicious of safety and validity. In this review, we will assess the effects of different training parameters on muscle and sarcopenia, summarize previous papers which compared the effects of HIIT and PAE in improving muscle quality and function, and evaluate the potential of HIIT to replace the status of PAE in treating old people with muscle atrophy and low modality; and point out drawbacks of temporary experiments. Our aim is to discuss the feasibility of HIIT to treat sarcopenia and provide a reference for clinical scientists who want to utilize HIIT as a new way to cope with sarcopenia.

A direct controlled chemical method for preparing large grain FeCo particles with micron level has been reported in this work. Nearly spherical bcc-FeCo alloy particles with average particle size of 1–5μm have been synthesized by controlled reduction reactions of Fe2+ and Co2+ ions in the water/CTAB/n-butanol/n-hexane microemulsion system. The micron-scale FeCo particles exhibit good intrinsic magnetic properties with high saturation magnetization of 199–211Am2/kg, due to their high purity and single bcc-FeCo phase. The FeCo-based magnetic cores with high density of 7.12–7.45g/cm3 can be produced via powder compacting molding process. The simple preparation process, good air stability, high saturation magnetization and good compaction ability for the chemically synthesized micro-scale FeCo particles, promise the great potential use of these materials for the full-density, near-net-shape and complex-shaped FeCo-based soft magnetic devices in high-power applications.
Little is known regarding the shared genetic architecture or causality underlying the phenotypic association observed for uterine leiomyoma (UL) and breast cancer (BC). Leveraging summary statistics ...from the hitherto largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted in each trait, we investigated the genetic overlap and causal associations of UL with BC overall, as well as with its subtypes defined by the status of estrogen receptor (ER). We observed a positive genetic correlation between UL and BC overall (r
= 0.09, p = 6.00 × 10
), which was consistent in ER+ subtype (r
= 0.06, p = 0.01) but not in ER- subtype (r
= 0.06, p = 0.08). Partitioning the whole genome into 1,703 independent regions, local genetic correlation was identified at 22q13.1 for UL with BC overall and with ER+ subtype. Significant genetic correlation was further discovered in 9 out of 14 functional categories, with the highest estimates observed in coding, H3K9ac, and repressed regions. Cross-trait meta-analysis identified 9 novel loci shared between UL and BC. Mendelian randomization demonstrated a significantly increased risk of BC overall (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.01-1.18) and ER+ subtype (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.01-1.17) for genetic liability to UL. No reverse causality was found. Our comprehensive genome-wide cross-trait analysis demonstrates a shared genetic basis, pleiotropic loci, as well as a putative causal relationship between UL and BC, highlighting an intrinsic link underlying these two complex female diseases.

A Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset (GSE79768) was downloaded. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by bioinformatic analysis. Enriched terms and pathways were identified by gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed to determine regulatory genes. CytoHubba and the Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) algorithm were used to identify potential hub genes and important modules. The Predicting Associated Transcription Factors From Annotated Affinities (PASTAA) method was used to predict transcription factors (TFs).
Two hundred thirty-five upregulated DEGs and seventy-seven downregulated DEGs were identified. In the GO biological process, cellular component, and molecular function analyses, positive regulation of cell migration, anchoring junctions, and cell adhesion molecule binding were enriched significantly. The Hippo signalling pathway was the most significantly enriched pathway. In the PPI network analysis, we found that Class A/1 (rhodopsin-like receptors) may be the critical module. Ten hub genes were extracted, including 6 upregulated genes and 4 downregulated genes. CXCR2, TLR4, and CXCR4 may play critical roles in AF. In the TF prediction, we found that Irf-1 may be implicated in AF.
We found that the CXCR4, TLR4, CXCR2 genes, the Hippo signalling pathway and the class A/1 (rhodopsin-like receptors) module may play critical roles in AF occurrence and maintenance, which may provide novel targets for AF treatment.

In this retrospective cohort study, we used administrative data to identify pregnant adults aged ≤49 years with stroke between 2002-2020 in Ontario, Canada and 2 comparison groups: (1) non-pregnant female patients with stroke and (2) pregnant patients without stroke. Patients who survived the index admission were followed until 2021. After propensity score matching, we used Cox regression with a robust variance estimator to compare pregnant patients with stroke and the 2 comparison groups for the composite outcome of death and all-cause non-pregnancy readmission. Where proportional hazard assumption was not met, we reported time-varying hazard ratios (HR) with 95% CIs by modeling the log-hazard ratio as a function of time using restricted cubic splines.
We identified 217 pregnant patients with stroke, 7604 non-pregnant patients with stroke, and 1 496 256 pregnant patients without stroke. Of the 202 pregnant patients with stroke who survived the index stroke admission, 41.6% (6.8 per 100 person-years) subsequently died or were readmitted during follow-up. Median follow-up times were 5 years (pregnancy-associated stroke), 3 years (non-pregnant stroke), and 8 years (pregnant without stroke). Pregnant patients with stroke had a lower hazard of death and all-cause readmission compared with non-pregnant patients with stroke at 1-year follow-up (HR, 0.64 95% CI, 0.44-0.94), but this association did not persist during longer-term follow-up. Conversely, pregnant patients with stroke had higher hazard of death and readmission compared with pregnant patients without stroke at 1-year follow-up (HR, 5.70 95% CI, 3.04-10.66), and this association persisted for a decade.
Stroke during pregnancy is associated with long-term health consequences. It is essential to transition care postpartum to primary or specialty care to optimize vascular health.
A total of 25 “heat-clearing and detoxifying” herbs used in Chinese medicine were investigated for their cytopathic effects on the growth of Newcastle Disease virus (NDV) in a chicken fibroblast cell ...line. The 5 herbs with the highest virus inhibitory effects were Herba agastaches, Flos chrysanthemi indici, Rhizoma anemarrhenae , Astragalus root and Baikal skullcap root and these were used in herbal formulations. Anti-NDV activities of 4 formulations were tested on the growth of NDV in the DF-1 fibroblast cell line. Formulation II, containing Baikal skullcap root, Astragalus root, Anemarrhena rhizome (1:1:2) and formulation IV containing Anemarrhena rhizome , Astragalus root and Flos chrysanthemi indici (1:1:1), which had strong anti-NDV activity in vitro , were used to determine the in vivo inhibitory effects of NDV-infection in chickens. After treatment with the two formulations serum IgY titres against NDV were improved, and morbidity was reduced in the NDV-infected chickens. The results suggest that the components in formulations II and IV acted synergistically to improve resistance to Newcastle disease and provide a basis for the developing an anti-NDV herbal medicine.
