ABSTRACT We report on the detection, from observations obtained with the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment spectroscopic survey, of a metal-poor (Fe/H = −1.3 dex) field giant ...star with an extreme Mg-Al abundance ratio (Mg/Fe = −0.31 dex; Al/Fe = 1.49 dex). Such low Mg/Al ratios are seen only among the second-generation population of globular clusters (GCs) and are not present among Galactic disk field stars. The light-element abundances of this star, 2M16011638-1201525, suggest that it could have been born in a GC. We explore several origin scenarios, studying the orbit of the star in particular to check the probability of its being kinematically related to known GCs. We performed simple orbital integrations assuming the estimated distance of 2M16011638-1201525 and the available six-dimensional phase-space coordinates of 63 GCs, looking for close encounters in the past with a minimum distance approach within the tidal radius of each cluster. We found a very low probability that 2M16011638-1201525 was ejected from most GCs; however, we note that the best progenitor candidate to host this star is GC Centauri (NGC 5139). Our dynamical investigation demonstrates that 2M16011638-1201525 reaches a distance from the Galactic plane and minimum and maximum approaches to the Galactic center of Rmin < 0.62 kpc and Rmax < 7.26 kpc in an eccentric (e ∼ 0.53) and retrograde orbit. Since the extreme chemical anomaly of 2M16011638-1201525 has also been observed in halo field stars, this object could also be considered a halo contaminant, likely to have been ejected into the Milky Way disk from the halo. We conclude that 2M16011638-20152 is also kinematically consistent with the disk but chemically consistent with halo field stars.
We report the first detailed chemical abundance analysis of the exoplanet-hosting M-dwarf stars Kepler-138 and Kepler-186 from the analysis of high-resolution (R ∼ 22,500) H-band spectra from the ...SDSS-IV-APOGEE survey. Chemical abundances of 13 elements-C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe-are extracted from the APOGEE spectra of these early M-dwarfs via spectrum syntheses computed with an improved line list that takes into account H2O and FeH lines. This paper demonstrates that APOGEE spectra can be analyzed to determine detailed chemical compositions of M-dwarfs. Both exoplanet-hosting M-dwarfs display modest sub-solar metallicities: Fe/HKepler-138 = −0.09 0.09 dex and Fe/HKepler-186 = −0.08 0.10 dex. The measured metallicities resulting from this high-resolution analysis are found to be higher by ∼0.1-0.2 dex than previous estimates from lower-resolution spectra. The C/O ratios obtained for the two planet-hosting stars are near-solar, with values of 0.55 0.10 for Kepler-138 and 0.52 0.12 for Kepler-186. Kepler-186 exhibits a marginally enhanced Si/Fe ratio.
With the advent of the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, it has recently become feasible to determine precise asteroseismic masses and relative ages for large samples of red giant stars. We present ...the CoRoGEE dataset, obtained from CoRoT light curves for 606 red giants in two fields of the Galactic disc that have been co-observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). We used the Bayesian parameter estimation code PARAM to calculate distances, extinctions, masses, and ages for these stars in a homogeneous analysis, resulting in relative statistical uncertainties of ≲2% in distance, ~4% in radius, ~9% in mass and ~25% in age. We also assessed systematic age uncertainties stemming from different input physics and mass loss. We discuss the correlation between ages and chemical abundance patterns of field stars over a broad radial range of the Milky Way disc (5 kpc <RGal< 14 kpc), focussing on the α/Fe-Fe/H-age plane in five radial bins of the Galactic disc. We find an overall agreement with the expectations of pure chemical-evolution models computed before the present data were available, especially for the outer regions. However, our data also indicate that a significant fraction of stars now observed near and beyond the solar neighbourhood migrated from inner regions. Mock CoRoGEE observations of a chemodynamical Milky Way disc model indicate that the number of high-metallicity stars in the outer disc is too high to be accounted for even by the strong radial mixing present in the model. The mock observations also show that the age distribution of the α/Fe-enhanced sequence in the CoRoGEE inner-disc field is much broader than expected from a combination of radial mixing and observational errors. We suggest that a thick-disc/bulge component that formed stars for more than 3 Gyr may account for these discrepancies. Our results are subject to future improvements due to (a) the still low statistics, because our sample had to be sliced into bins of Galactocentric distances and ages; (b) large uncertainties in proper motions (and therefore guiding radii); and (c) corrections to the asteroseismic mass-scaling relation. The situation will improve not only upon the upcoming Gaia data releases, but also with the foreseen increase in the number of stars with both seismic and spectroscopic information.

populations in the southern Iberian ...Peninsula was analyzed in relation to historical records of land use, combining dendroecological growth of adult trees and greenness (EVI) as proxies for secondary and primary growth. The growth trends reflected a strong influence of old land-use legacies (firewood removal) in the current forest structure. Trees were highly sensitive to moisture availability, but both primary growth and secondary growth expressed high resilience to drought events over the short and the long term. Resilience and the tree growth response to climate followed a water-stress gradient. A positive growth trend since the late 1970s was particularly evident in mesic (colder and wetter) high-elevation stands, but absent in the most xeric (warmer and drier) stands. The high values of resilience observed suggest that the studied
Q. pyrenaica
populations are located in a geographical but not a climatic or ecological rear edge. Resilience of oak stands to drought events was not spatially homogeneous across the mountain range, due to differences in ecological conditions and/or past management legacies. This is particularly relevant for rear-edge populations where topographic and biophysical variability can facilitate the existence of refugia.
The aim of this investigation was to determine the frequency and association of the variants rs4817415, rs2070424, and rs1041740 of the SOD1 gene in healthy women and breast cancer (BC) patients.
...Genomic DNA samples from 146 healthy women and 130 patients with BC were analyzed.
GG genotype (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.31-4.91, p = 0.0073) and the G allele (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.09-1.73, p = 0.007) of the rs2070424 variant and CC genotype (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.04-0.2.70, p = 0.0444) and allele C (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.09-2.29, p = 0.0183) of the rs1041740 variant of SOD1 gene were associated as risk factors for BC susceptibility relative to the control group. Study groups comparison of the stratification by menopausal status showed an association of susceptibility to BC risk with carriers of the GG genotype (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.11-7.81, p = 0.042) of the rs2070424 variant and with the premenopausal status of the study group and the TT (OR 2.89, 95% CI 1.73-4.85, p = 0.001) genotype of the rs1041740 variant. Furthermore, differences were observed in the patients with BC who were carriers of the CC genotype of the rs4817415 variant with elevated Ki-67 (≥ 20%) and who presented lymph node metastasis and stage III-IV BC (p<0.05). Two common haplotypes were identified in the study groups: CAC (protective factor), and CGC (risk factor) (p<0.05).
The rs2070424 and rs1041740 variants of the SOD1 gene and the CGC haplotype were associated as risk susceptibility factors of BC in this sample analyzed.
A library of over 20 cycloplatinated compounds of the type Pt(dmba-R)LCl (dmba-R = C,N-dimethylbenzylamine-like ligand; R being MeO, Me, H, Br, F, CF3, and NO2 substituents in the R5 or R4 position ...of the phenyl ring; L = DMSO and P(C6H4CF3-p)3) has been prepared. All compounds are active in both human ovarian carcinoma A2780 cells and cisplatin-resistant A2780cisR cells, with most of the DMSO platinum complexes exhibiting IC50 values in the submicromolar range in the A2780 cell line. Interestingly, DMSO platinum complexes show low cytotoxicity in the nontumorigenic kidney cell line BGM and therefore high selectivity factors SF. In addition, some of the DMSO platinum complexes effectively inhibit angiogenesis in the human umbilical vein endothelial cell line EA.hy926. These are the first platinum(II) complexes reported to inhibit angiogenesis at a close concentration to their IC50 in A2780 cells, turning them into dual cytotoxic and antiangiogenic compounds.
Changes in the microbiota have been linked to persistent inflammation during treated HIV infection. In this pilot double-blind study, we study 30 HIV-infected subjects on antiretroviral therapy (ART) ...with a CD4/CD8 ratio < 1 randomized to either weekly fecal microbiota capsules or placebo for 8 weeks. Stool donors were rationally selected based on their microbiota signatures. We report that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is safe, not related to severe adverse events, and attenuates HIV-associated dysbiosis. FMT elicits changes in gut microbiota structure, including significant increases in alpha diversity, and a mild and transient engraftment of donor's microbiota during the treatment period. The greater engraftment seems to be achieved by recent antibiotic use before FMT. The Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae families, which are typically depleted in people with HIV, are the taxa more robustly engrafted across time-points. In exploratory analyses, we describe a significant amelioration in the FMT group in intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (IFABP), a biomarker of intestinal damage that independently predicts mortality. Gut microbiota manipulation using a non-invasive and safe strategy of FMT delivery is feasible and deserves further investigation. Trial number: NCT03008941.
ABSTRACT NGC 2420 is a ∼2 Gyr old well-populated open cluster that lies about 2 kpc beyond the solar circle, in the general direction of the Galactic anti-center. Most previous abundance studies have ...found this cluster to be mildly metal-poor, but with a large scatter in the obtained metallicities. Detailed chemical abundance distributions are derived for 12 red-giant members of NGC 2420 via a manual abundance analysis of high-resolution (R = 22,500) near-infrared (λ1.5-1.7 m) spectra obtained from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. The sample analyzed contains six stars that are identified as members of the first-ascent red giant branch (RGB), as well as six members of the red clump (RC). We find small scatter in the star-to-star abundances in NGC 2420, with a mean cluster abundance of Fe/H = −0.16 0.04 for the 12 red giants. The internal abundance dispersion for all elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni) is also very small (∼0.03-0.06 dex), indicating a uniform cluster abundance distribution within the uncertainties. NGC 2420 is one of the clusters used to calibrate the APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline (ASPCAP). The results from this manual analysis compare well with ASPCAP abundances for most of the elements studied, although for Na, Al, and V there are more significant offsets. No evidence of extra-mixing at the RGB luminosity bump is found in the 12C and 14N abundances from the pre-luminosity-bump RGB stars in comparison to the post-He core-flash RC stars.
We report the peculiar chemical abundance patterns of 11 atypical Milky Way (MW) field red giant stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). These atypical ...giants exhibit strong Al and N enhancements accompanied by C and Mg depletions, strikingly similar to those observed in the so-called second-generation (SG) stars of globular clusters (GCs). Remarkably, we find low Mg abundances (Mg/Fe < 0.0) together with strong Al and N overabundances in the majority (5/7) of the metal-rich (Fe/H −1.0) sample stars, which is at odds with actual observations of SG stars in Galactic GCs of similar metallicities. This chemical pattern is unique and unprecedented among MW stars, posing urgent questions about its origin. These atypical stars could be former SG stars of dissolved GCs formed with intrinsically lower abundances of Mg and enriched Al (subsequently self-polluted by massive AGB stars) or the result of exotic binary systems. We speculate that the stars Mg-deficiency as well as the orbital properties suggest that they could have an extragalactic origin. This discovery should guide future dedicated spectroscopic searches of atypical stellar chemical patterns in our Galaxy, a fundamental step forward to understanding the Galactic formation and evolution.
