Alltagsgeschichte,or the history of everyday life, emerged during the 1980s as the most interesting new field among West German historians and, more recently, their East German colleagues. Partly in ...reaction to the modernization theory pervading West German social history in the 1970s, practitioners of alltagsgeschichte stressed the complexities of popular experience, paying particular attention, for instance, to the relationship of the German working class to Nazism. Now the first English translation of a key volume of essays (Alltagsgeschichte: Zur Rekonstruktion historischer Erfahrungen und Lebensweisen) presents this approach and shows how it cuts across the boundaries of established disciplines. The result is a work of great methodological, theoretical, and historiographical significance as well as a substantive contribution to German studies.

Wet air oxidation (WAO), involving oxidation at high temperature (125--320 C) and pressure (0.5--20 MPa) conditions, is useful for the treatment of hazardous, toxic, and nonbiodegradable waste ...streams. The process becomes self-sustaining when the feed chemical oxygen demand (COD) is about 20,000 mg/l and can be a net energy producer at sufficient higher feed COD's. All the published information on WAO has been analyzed and presented in a coherent manner. Wet air oxidation studies on pure compounds have been critically reviewed. Mechanism, kinetics, and structure-oxidizability correlation for WAO of carboxylic acids, phenols, cyanides, and nitriles have been described. The industrial applications discussed include municipal sewage sludge treatment, distillery waste treatment, black liquor treatment, cyanide and nitrile wastewater treatment, spent carbon regeneration, and energy and resource regeneration. Waste streams from other sources and some miscellaneous applications of WAO have also been included. Special emphasis is given to WAO under supercritical conditions (above the critical temperature of water) and oxydesulfurization of coal. In addition to the industrial applications, some other aspects (like various catalysts and oxidizing agents) of WAO have also been discussed. Recommendations and suggestions for further investigations have been made. 560 refs.
In the last two decades, there has been a widespread movement from authoritarian to democratic rule among developing countries, often occurring against a backdrop of severe economic crises and the ...adoption of market-oriented reforms. The coincidence of these events raises long-standing questions about the relationship between economic and political change. In this book, Stephan Haggard and Robert Kaufman explore this relationship, addressing a variety of questions: What role have economic crises played in the current wave of political liberalization and democratization? Can new democracies manage the daunting political challenges posed by economic reform? Under what economic and institutional conditions is democracy most likely to be consolidated? Drawing on contemporary political economy and the experiences of twelve Latin American and Asian countries, they develop a new approach to understanding democratic transitions.
Haggard and Kaufman first analyze the relationship between economic crisis and authoritarian withdrawal and then examine how the economic and institutional legacies of authoritarian rule affect the capacity of new democratic governments to initiate and sustain economic policy reform. Finally, the authors analyze the consolidation of political and economic reform over the long run. Throughout, they emphasize the relationship between economic conditions, the interests and power of contending social groups, and the mediating role of representative institutions, particularly political parties.
The synthesis and photophysical characterization of nucleobase-substituted porphyrins designed to form rigid hydrogen-bonded ensembles, and to allow for energy transfer within the resulting ...complexes, is reported Watson-Crick nucleobase-pairing interactions between guanosine- and cytidine-bearing porphyrins are used to assemble the hydrogen-bonded ensembles. Likewise, zinc(II) and free-base porphyrins are used respectively as the donors and acceptors within these ensembles that, depending on design, contain either two or three total porphyrin subunits within the supramolecular assembly. The association constant for guanosine-to-cytidine association representing the primary interaction in each donor-acceptor assembly, is ca, 22 000 +- 200 Msup minus1 in CDsub 2Clsub 2 as determined from sup 1H NMR titration analyses. Both singlet and triplet energy transfer was observed within the various donor-acceptor assemblies. Whereas the singlet-state energy-transfer dynamics are consistent with a Foerster-type process, triplet energy transfer within the same complex is believed to occur through the hydrogen-bonded interface. The presently-described noncovalent approach to donor-acceptor ensemble generation is thus considered to provide a novel and useful approach to modeling aspects of the photon antennae that are part of the natural photosynthetic process. 31 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.
