Abstract
Star-forming galaxies populate a main sequence (MS), a well-defined relation between stellar mass (
M
*
) and star formation rate (SFR). Starburst (SB) galaxies lie significantly above the ...relation, whereas quenched galaxies lie below the sequence. In order to study the evolution of galaxies on the SFR–
M
*
plane and its connection to the gas content, we use the fact that recent episodes of star formation can be pinpointed by the existence of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Here we present sensitive C
i
nondetections of
z
∼ 2 ultraluminous infrared (ULIRG) GRB host galaxies. We find that our GRB hosts have similar molecular masses to those of other ULIRGs. However, unlike other ULIRGs, the GRB hosts are located at the MS or only a factor of a few above it. Hence, our GRB hosts are caught in the transition toward the SB phase. This is further supported by the estimated depletion times, which are similar to those of other transitioning galaxies. The GRB hosts are C
i
-dark galaxies, defined as having a C
i
/CO temperature brightness ratio of <0.1. Such a low C
i
/CO ratio has been found in high-density environments (
n
H
> 10

cm

) where CO is shielded from photodissociation, leading to underabundances of C

. This is consistent with the merger process that is indeed suggested for our GRB hosts by their morphologies.
ABSTRACT
The exploration of the spatial distribution of chemical abundances in star-forming regions of galactic discs can help us to understand the complex interplay of physical processes that ...regulate the star formation activity and the chemical enrichment across a galaxy. We study the azimuthal variations of the normalized oxygen abundance profiles in the highest numerical resolution run of the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) Project at $z$ = 0. We use young stellar populations to trace the abundances of star-forming regions. Oxygen profiles are estimated along different line of sights from a centrally located observer. The mean azimuthal variation in the EAGLE discs are ∼0.12 ± 0.03 dex $R_{\rm eff}^{-1}$ for slopes and ∼0.12 ± 0.03 dex for the zero-points, in agreement with previous works. Metallicity gradients measured along random directions correlate with those determined by averaging over the whole discs, although with a large dispersion. We find a slight trend for higher azimuthal variations in the disc components of low star-forming and bulge-dominated galaxies. We also investigate the metallicity profiles of stellar populations with higher and lower levels of enrichment than the average metallicity profiles, and we find that high star-forming regions with high metallicity tend to have slightly shallower metallicity slopes compared with the overall metallicity gradient. The simulated azimuthal variations in the EAGLE discs are in agreement with observations, although the large variety of metallicity gradients would encourage further exploration of the metal mixing in numerical simulations.
ABSTRACT
Be stars are found to rotate close to their critical rotation and therefore they are considered an important laboratory for the study of stellar rotation. In this context, we obtain the ...projected rotational velocity of a sample of classical Be southern stars in the BeSOS database via Fourier transforms in an automated way for several absorption lines at different epochs. A Gaussian profile is fitted to eight observed photospheric He i lines in order to select automatically from the profile the spectral signal given by areas under the curve of 95.45, 98.75, and 99.83 per cent, to obtain vsin i via the Fourier transform technique. The values obtained are in global agreement with the literature. Analysing only one line is not enough to set the vsin i value: depending on the line, the value in most cases is underestimated with respect to λ4471. When gravity-darkening effects are included, apparent values increase by ∼10 per cent. The resolution of the instrument Pontificia Universidad Catolica High Echelle Resolution Optical Spectrograph (PUCHEROS) used for BeSOS spectra ($R \sim 17\, 000$) constrains the theoretical lower bound possible to vsin i ∼ 100 km s−1. The procedure has limitations, using a linear limb-darkening function with ε = 0.6 for classical Be stars rotating close to the break-up velocity without gravity-darkening corrections, which cannot be negligible. Previous works measure vsin i values using just one spectral line and here we demonstrate that with more lines the results can vary. This could be due to the photospheric distribution of atomic transitions in classical Be stars.

Conclusions: Most of the patients analyzed (n = 429) were women. The average age was 56.79 years, with most patients analyzed aged between 60 and 69. Undergraduate students made the highest number of diagnoses. Most diagnoses were made at the San Martín de Porres center.
Abstract Introduction In Brazil, professionals, scientific community, and members of regulatory bodies have not yet achieved a consensus regarding who can legally perform the professional duties of a ...clinical engineer. We aim at clarifying this aspect, based on a detailed analysis of the pertinent regulations. Methods We acted on three fronts: (i) reviewing the current legislation regarding the clinical engineering exercise; (ii) visiting hospitals and working as trainee to understand how this exercise is implemented on Brazil’s Federal District; (iii) one of the authors participated in virtual discussion groups of clinical engineering professionals, monitoring collective understanding of regulations, checking consistency of proper knowledge, and acting as an active opinion leader in the subject among peers. Results We try to make a formal definition of clinical engineer and indicate their characteristic activities. We propose a synthesis of the regulation regarding healthcare products’ integrity protection and health technology management, identifying the engineering activities necessary to achieve those legal requirements. We analyze the legal constraints and conditions to exert engineering, indicating the necessary professionals’ attributions and the way to obtain them. Finally, we provide a brief analysis of the technical requirements presented by the Brazilian Consumer Protection Code and of the 15.943 Brazilian Standard (NBR). Discussion We conclude that, despite the lack of consensus about the Clinical Engineering activity, there exists in Brazil a Clinical Engineering regulation, but it is spread in complex laws and normative resolutions, defining compulsory responsibilities and attributions, as well as conditions and prerequisites for role performance.
Protected natural areas are the crown jewels of nature conservation efforts, and the only way to ensure proper nature protection is through good management of protected areas. Although management ...tasks required on account of the diversity and variety of the Alpine territory are too many to list, visitor infrastructure is only one of important management activities. The second part of the paper discusses management approaches and the existing state of visitation infrastructure in the park.
