In this article, over a time dimension of two decades we will examine how judgements on gender equality in opinion polls are 'translated' into gender relations in politics. For this purpose, we ...extracted some (for the subject of our research) accountable questions and analysed the respondents' changing preferences in a time perspective. We found that during the 1990s, when we had an extremely low share of women in politics, the proportion of those gender equality had very positively assessed was greatly reduced, and that at the same time the proportion of those indifferent to these values (among men and among women) increased. Men were simultaneously perceived as better political leaders. The share of the latter judgements in the next period declined steadily and by 2011 had almost halved, which may indicate positive developments also in this respect and foretell a possible shift towards the loosening of male domination in politics.
An exploration of the theories of equal participation of men and women within the new parties in Slovenian political life alongside the realities of gender parity allows questions to be raised ...concerning the gendered nature of citizenship within the new political climate in Slovenia. It is apparent that the gender balance changed in the elections between 1990 and 1996. The development of women's groups and forums, first outside the political party structures and later within them, highlights the ways in which women's self-organization used governmental mechanisms to challenge inequities of Slovenian party political life. The efforts and the range of activities undertaken by women's groups draw attention to the provisions which need to be made if the parties are to make transparent their policy towards the issue of 'equal presence'. Most parties confine themselves to the verbal strategies of supporting women's entry into politics and are unwilling to take steps or adopt strategies involving positive action, such as quotas. The result of such a policy in Slovenia (definitely not only due to the parties) is that there are only seven women among 90 deputies in lower house of parliament. It is recognized that, even if quotas were implemented, these alone would not be sufficient because what is needed is a political atmosphere that is favourably disposed towards the equality of men and women within political parties and in society as a whole.

ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The paper deals with migratory processes from the area of the former Yugoslavian republics towards Slovenia, focusing primarily on women migratory population. By combining ...theoretical knowledge with empirical findings the article tries to shed light on the poorly researched immigration processes in Slovenia, despite the fact that immigration rate has exceeded emigration rate already since the 1960s. Its main perspective proceeds from personal narrations which transgress the usual monochromic conclusions and expose the need to study women's migration in a contextualized perspective. The main methodology used rely on the oral history method of collecting life stories; a free, conversational method of gathering information about migratory experiences, which also reveals new perspectives, new research questions. // ABSTRACT IN ITALIAN: Il presente articolo tratta i processi di migrazione dalle repubbliche dell'ex Jugoslavia in Slovenia e in primo luogo si concentra sulle migrazioni della popolazione femminile.
By drawing on Bourdieu's concepts of field, capital and habitus, this text aims to comprehend the problem of women entering politics. It builds on the hypothesis that entering politics signifies the ...entering of a specific field: that the person entering politics -- he or she -- must possess specific forms of capital. This calls for an understanding of the way in which the political field is structured as well as of the broader political and cultural context in which deliberation on and actual entrance into politics takes place. We are interested in the way the political field is structured in Slovenia, how it functions and what is its 'message' to those who consider entering it. That is to say that decisions to enter politics take place in the context of a specific understanding of the place and role of gender in everyday life, political culture and society in general: as well as in relation to very specific evaluations of individual gender roles and thus also in a setting that influences conceptions of the (in)appropriateness of women entering the field of politics. Through an analysis of interviews made with representatives of the political elite, we delineate the concrete problems politicians of both genders face when entering and working in politics. In doing this, we pay special attention to gender differences. Adapted from the source document.
The text brings into focus contemporary research on equal opportunities, the entrance and activities of men and women in politics, as well as structural, system and other obstacles they face on their ...way to decision-making institutions. Primarily, it provides an overview of the most important, widely successful or most referenced international research in the field, together with an overview of research undertaken in Slovenia. In particular, the text addresses the research problem of how the private sphere influences public or political activity. As women are traditionally considered as being more connected to and interested in the private sphere, the text mostly deals with the problem of the obstacles women face when entering politics. Because this kind of research is missing in Slovenia, the authors (before becoming involved in studying this problem in Slovenia) examined similar research in the United States of America. On this basis and with a consideration of certain specificities of Slovenian territory, they frame methodological reflections regarding their own research project that is presented at the end of the text. The article analyses the legislative polices of states that joined the European Union in 2004 in the field of gender-based violence. It is in that context that the implementation of EU directives and ...recommendations concerning gender-based violence in the family, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation and trafficking are presented and analyzed. The article also asks who the key actors were that influenced the process of amending the legislation and introducing better solutions, when these measures were more frequent, and in which areas they were missing.
