Publikacijoje nagrinėjamas racionalumas, jo tipai ir istorinė raida. Racionalizmo atsiradimas Vakaruose siejamas su ikisokratikų filosofija. Skiriami ir analizuojami keturi racionalizmo tipai: ...naivusis racionalizmas (R. Descartesas, I. Kantas, K. R. Popperis, R. Carnapas, I. Lakatosas ir kt.), kontekstą įvertinantis racionalizmas (marksizmas, antropologija), naivusis anarchizmas (įvairios ekstazinės religijos ir politinio anarchizmo formos) ir paties autoriaus pozicija, kurios pirmtakais jis laiko S. Kierkegaardą, N. Bohrą ir F. Nietzschę. Naivusis racionalizmas yra visuotinis ir besąlygiškas bei išreiškiamas taip pat visuotinėmis ir besąlygiškomis taisyklėmis bei kriterijais. Pasak kontekstą įvertinančio racionalizmo, racionalumas nėra visuotinis, bet galimi visuotinai galiojantys sąlyginiai teiginiai, kurie nustato, kas ir kada racionalu. Naivusis anarchizmas teigia, kad visos taisyklės ir kriterijai turi ribas ir kad kaip tik dėl to reikia išsiversti be jų. Autoriaus manymu, kontekstą įvertinančios taisyklės turi ne pakeisti absoliučias taisykles, bet pas papildyti. Kiekvienas kriterijus, kontroliuojantis veiklos tėkmę, pats turi tapti jos dalimi.
This volume of twenty-six essays by as many contributors is published in honor of Herbert Feigl, professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Center for the ...Philosophy of Science. Though the majority of the contributors are philosophers, there are also -- as benefits Mr. Feigl’s varied intellectual interests -- representatives of psychology, psychoanalysis, and physics. The first group of ten essays deals with the philosophy of mind, particularly with the mind-body problem, to which Mr. Feigl has devoted much attention. The eleven essays in the second part are concerned with problems of philosophical method, especially with induction and confirmation. The third part is comprised of five essays on the philosophy of the physical sciences. A biographical sketch of Mr. Feigl and a bibliography of his writings are also provided.

This collection of the writings of Paul Feyerabend is focused on his philosophy of quantum physics, the hotbed of the key issues of his most debated ideas. Written between 1948 and 1970, these ...writings come from his first and most productive period. These early works are important for two main reasons. First, they document Feyerabend's deep concern with the philosophical implications of quantum physics and its interpretations. These ideas were paid less attention in the following two decades. Second, the writings provide the crucial background for Feyerabend's critiques of Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn. Although rarely considered by scholars, Feyerabend's early work culminated in the first version of Against Method. These writings guided him on all the key issues of his most well-known and debated theses, such as the incommensurability thesis, the principles of proliferation and tenacity, and his particular version of relativism, and more specifically on quantum mechanics.
This is an English translation of Paul Feyerabend's earliest extant essay “Der Begriff der Verständlichkeit in der modernen Physik” (1948). In it, Feyerabend defends positivism as a progressive ...framework for scientific research in certain stages of scientific development. He argues that in physics visualizability (Anschaulichkeit) and intelligibility (Verständlichkeit) are time-conditioned concepts: what is deemed visualizable in the development of physical theories is relative to a specific historical context and changes over time. He concludes that from time to time the abandonment of visualizability is crucial for progress in physics, as it is conducive to major theory change, illustrating the point on the basis of advances in atomic theory.
