The article analyses a miracle which happened within the chapel of a charitable institution in the town of Asti in the early Eighteenth-Century. A host bleeding after the consecration is the object ...of the testimonies given by a young priest, a canon, a notary and a Savoyard intendant.Starting from the negotiation of the meanings of the prodigy between them, the article tries to interpret the episode along a jurisdictional perspective, which allows us to put actions in place through the intertwining of local powers. This direction of analysis changes our representation of the sacred, as it constantly underlines its close relationship with action. In the Old regime society religious phenomena existed and developed within intertwining jurisdictions and, by their own dynamics, modified them. In turn, this plurality of jurisdictions, of juridical systems and of actions changes also our conception of the local. To be able to observe actions – through the texts depicting them -, we must operate at a topographic scale. At this level the simultaneous presence of different institutional prerogatives, of their tensions and competitions can be properly observed. Thence, topographical analysis can be used to draw this plurality, and to inquire the possible relations between action, text and place. The thick reading of texts that I propose refers to actions which are interconnected by the means of rhetorical contexts. But these contexts are by no means linked in an exclusive way to other texts only. Other social, political and cultural actors are at work beside them.
This paper discusses the possible local history boundaries within the paradigm of global history. Based on the questioning to the existing equation between local and global, by means of an analogy ...between micro and macro levels, the current research attempts to rebuild the methodological implications of the so-called “Spatial turn”. Likewise, it analyzes the contradictions of the metaphorical analysis of space. Particularly, this research will focus on the rejection to the endogenous explanations of global history. This, in turn, contributes to the highlighting of the analytical boundaries of the circulation paradigm on which this is, likewise, based on.
Des historiographies connectées? : Les
Annales
,
Quaderni storici
Connected Historiographies? The
Annales
,
Quaderni storici
, and the Test of Social History
The article proposes an analysis of the long-distance dialogue between the
Annales
and
Quaderni storici
, exploring the two journals’ positions vis-à-vis developments in social history since the 1980s. For their part, the
Annales
have taken up some of the propositions of microhistory, in the perspective of the interplay of scales (
jeux d’échelles
), elaborating a cultural history of social practices and supporting “area studies.”
Quaderni storici
have focused on criticizing the deconstructionist content of the linguistic turn by exploring the juridical dimension of the structure and genesis of sources, as well as through gender and locality. The article highlights moments of exchange between the two journals over the past few years—on global history or environmental history, for instance—as well as their diverging trajectories on topics such as the relations between law and history or philosophy and history, or on reactions to the recent “archival turn.”
A pragmatic analysis of the will allows interpreting the pious legacy as a response to the inner tensions of kinship that builds a public and privileged place of ceremonial action. This action takes ...on different institutional forms, of which the legal literature of the old regime helps to grasp common features. Last but not least, pastoral visits identify the practices the legacies are subject to, which are translated into a number of privileged bodies - from foundations of masses to resource distributions, from the foundation of parishes to devotional innovations.
