Vattimo diagnoses the current inefficacy of democracy and hermeneutics as they are practiced in the twenty-first century. Their shared crisis has to do with their neutralization and, therefore, ...de-politicization, ultimately linked to the search for an objective truth. In opposition to this meta-physical appropriation of potentially destabilizing forces dormant in democracy and hermeneutics, Vattimo avows a non-neutral interpretative and political stance that takes sides with those most disadvantaged by the current status quo. As a result, he provocatively suggests in the conclusion that hermeneutics will become "the ontology of revolution."
According to the author, the orígin of this interest in some way depend on the new legitimacy that the end of metaphysics gives to methaphorical discourse. The closure of the secularisation phenomenon is analysed articulating Nietzsche's nihilims with Heidegger's ontology. The key hypothesis explored claims that if philosophical pluralism is seriously taken into account, it faces again the Judeo-Chistian religious tradition. Meanwhile Niezsche's nihilism suppose that there are not strong philosophical motives left in order to be atheistic, Heidegger's ontology compels us to read the history become a secularisation in actu of the West religious message.
One could argue that fifty years after the publication ofTruth and Methodhermeneutics has rediscovered some of its roots—which were already present and brought forth in the history reconstructed by ...Gadamer—and has placed others in parentheses. Gadamer always insisted on the importance of biblical hermeneutics and juridical hermeneutics in the development of the reflection on interpretation; but in reality—according to a line that can be similarly recognized in the development of Heideggerian philosophy—he had above all emphasized aesthetic experience in his theory. Contrary to the “neutralization” which took place in the developments of Kantianism, it
In Professor Gianni Vattimo's last lesson before his retirement from the University of Turin, he provides a continuation and the provisional conclusion of his work of the last years and months. Among ...other things, Vatimmo suggests that suggested that people should consider hermeneutics as a new koiné, a new common language for a large part of contemporary philosophy.
