The mystery of permanence is the theme investigated by Claudia Pirina in the forms of the sacred and in those architectural systems capable of relating man to the divine. These forms are perpetuated ...over time, in a circularity that becomes essence, stimulating reminiscence. They are forms of the transposition and representation of mnemonic images, delegated to the remembrance of the absent object (or person), activated by perception and by the senses. In this text, however, we are not interested in investigating only the forms themselves, but rather the ability of some architects to «bring together distant forms, in time and in the mind, to bring together a time with another time, to create short circuits; another idea of time». Two works, not contemporary to us, are used as examples for their ability to interpret differently, sometimes oscillating ambiguously between one term and the other, what Teyssot recognizes as a fundamental problem of funeral art: «invention as opposed to repetition»: PleČnik’s Garden of the Dead in the Žale cemetery in Ljubljana and Ravnikar’s Kampor Memorial on the island of Rab.
In Ljubljana and in its surroundings the music at a traditional funeral still consists usually of a vocal ensemble or a trumpet, but in 2016 this has increasingly tended to be replaced by a girl’s ...vocal and instrumental ensemble. The choice of music depends largely on the wishes of the relatives of the deceased. Folk music predominates, followed by popular music; the music requested least is classical music. The most frequently performed songs of the year 2016 were: Gozdič je že zelen, Lipa zelenela je and Nearer my God to Thee.

Contrary to the then new approaches to the construction of cemeteries, Plečnik decided to build funeral chapels in the spirit of local tradition and different historical architectural types. The starting point of the article is a cluster of reflections on the interdisciplinary potential of 'Lenten Lamentations' (Gorzkie żale). Subsequently, the text moves on to present the arrangement, ...methodology and foundations of empirical studies conducted in the year 2017 among a group of high school students from grades 1–3, who were put in charge of two tasks. In the first one they were supposed to say what the service of 'Lenten Lamentations' meant to them. The other one, which was an analysis of specific hymns from the liturgy, examines the impact of their lyrics on the students. The gathered material, which is very rich, makes it possible to assume a number of analytical approaches. The present article concentrates only on discussing a handful of selected results. The conclusions concern methods and ways of reading texts of culture in Polish literature classes.
This article discusses symbolic forms and the association of folklore and politics in the Riga Brethren Cemetery (Brāļu Kapi). The iconographic and formal analysis of this memorial sheds light on its ...function as a place of worship for those who fell in action while fighting for the sovereignty of the Latvian people. Considering that Latvia suffered severely from different foreign rules over the past centuries, the memorial has contributed to strengthen nationalistic movements in Latvian society and has played an important role in nation-building. The cemetery's landscape design as well as its large-scale monuments by the Latvian sculptor Kārlis Zāle (1888-1942) borrowed their themes from Latvian mythology. After investigating another major work of Zāle, the Freedom Monument in Riga, I analyse the main elements of the sculptural ensemble of the Brethren Cemetery. Eventually, I outline how the political circumstances have influenced the burial practices over the decades. With Latvia celebrating the centennial of its first proclamation of independence in 2018, the restoration of this memorial has been undertaken in recent years.
