We search for signatures of gravitational lensing in the gravitational-wave signals from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) ...and Advanced Virgo during O3a, the first half of their third observing run. We study: (1) the expected rate of lensing at current detector sensitivity and the implications of a non-observation of strong lensing or a stochastic gravitational-wave background on the merger-rate density at high redshift; (2) how the interpretation of individual high-mass events would change if they were found to be lensed; (3) the possibility of multiple images due to strong lensing by galaxies or galaxy clusters; and (4) possible wave-optics effects due to point-mass microlenses. Several pairs of signals in the multiple-image analysis show similar parameters and, in this sense, are nominally consistent with the strong lensing hypothesis. However, taking into account population priors, selection effects, and the prior odds against lensing, these events do not provide sufficient evidence for lensing. Overall, we find no compelling evidence for lensing in the observed gravitational-wave signals from any of these analyses.
This highly readable book offers a contemporary interpretation of the political thought of Edmund Burke, drawing on his experiences to illuminate and address fundamental questions of politics and ...society that are of particular interest today. In Edmund Burke for Our Time, Byrne asserts that Burke's politics is reflective of unique and sophisticated ideas about how people think and learn and about determinants of political behavior.
Edmund Burke (1730-97) lived during one of the most extraordinary periods of world history. He grappled with the significance of the British Empire in India, fought for reconciliation with the ...American colonies, and was a vocal critic of national policy during three European wars. He also advocated reform in Britain and became a central protagonist in the great debate on the French Revolution. Drawing on the complete range of printed and manuscript sources,Empire and Revolutionoffers a vivid reconstruction of the major concerns of this outstanding statesman, orator, and philosopher. In restoring Burke to his original political and intellectual context, this book overturns the conventional picture of a partisan of tradition against progress and presents a multifaceted portrait of one of the most captivating figures in eighteenth-century life and thought. A boldly ambitious work of scholarship, this book challenges us to rethink the legacy of Burke and the turbulent era in which he played so pivotal a role.
Hieronymus Colloredo (1732–1812) was Salzburg's Prince Archbishop between 1772 and 1803. He corresponded with his brother, the imperial vice-chancellor Gundaker Collordo (1731–1807). A total of 655 ...letters have been preserved, most of them from the years 1790 to 1800.
Nocturnal blood pressure (BP) profile shows characteristic abnormalities in OSA, namely acute postapnea BP surges and nondipping BP. These abnormal BP profiles provide prognostic clues indicating ...increased cardiovascular disease risk. We developed a deep neural network model to perform computerized analysis of polysomnography data and predict nocturnal BP profile.
We analyzed concurrently performed polysomnography and noninvasive beat-to-beat BP measurement with a deep neural network model to predict nocturnal BP profiles from polysomnography data in 13 patients with severe OSA.
A good correlation was noted between measured and predicted postapnea systolic and diastolic BP (Pearson r ≥ .75). Moreover, Bland-Altman analyses showed good agreement between the 2 values. Continuous systolic and diastolic BP prediction by the deep neural network model was also well correlated with measured BP values (Pearson r ≥ .83).
We developed a deep neural network model to predict nocturnal BP profile from clinical polysomnography signals and provide a potential prognostic tool in OSA. Validation of the model in larger samples and examination of its utility in predicting CVD risk in future studies is warranted.
In January 1772, the actor and playwright Charles Macklin suffered a major blow: much of his property was lost in a shipwreck off the Irish coast, including his books and personal manuscripts. ...Subsequent accounts of Macklin's life and career have produced no further details of the event; the ship has never been identified, errors have been propagated, and the impact of the loss has been understated in the leading account of Macklin's life. Macklin, who was originally from Donegal in the north of Ireland, traveled from London to Dublin in early November 1771. He moved to Dublin in order to begin a new engagement at the Crow Street Theatre, arriving on 11 November, and began performing on 6 December as Francis Wronghead in The Provoked Husband. His property was sent after his departure, packed up by his wife who followed later, arriving on 24 December.
Large uplifts and tilts occurred on the Sumatran outer arc islands between 0.5° and 3.3°S during great historical earthquakes in 1797 and 1833, as judged from relative sea level changes recorded by ...annually banded coral heads. Coral data for these two earthquakes are most complete along a 160‐km length of the Mentawai islands between 3.2° and 2°S. Uplift there was as great as 0.8 m in 1797 and 2.8 m in 1833. Uplift in 1797 extended 370 km, between 3.2° and 0.5°S. The pattern and magnitude of uplift imply megathrust ruptures corresponding to moment magnitudes (Mw) in the range 8.5 to 8.7. The region of uplift in 1833 ranges from 2° to at least 3.2°S and, judging from historical reports of shaking and tsunamis, perhaps as far as 5°S. The patterns and magnitude of uplift and tilt in 1833 are similar to those experienced farther north, between 0.5° and 3°N, during the giant Nias‐Simeulue megathrust earthquake of 2005; the outer arc islands rose as much as 3 m and tilted toward the mainland. Elastic dislocation forward modeling of the coral data yields megathrust ruptures with moment magnitudes ranging from 8.6 to 8.9. Sparse accounts at Padang, along the mainland west coast at latitude 1°S, imply tsunami runups of at least 5 m in 1797 and 3–4 m in 1833. Tsunamis simulated from the pattern of coral uplift are roughly consistent with these reports. The tsunami modeling further indicates that the Indian Ocean tsunamis of both 1797 and 1833, unlike that of 2004, were directed mainly south of the Indian subcontinent. Between about 0.7° and 2.1°S, the lack of vintage 1797 and 1833 coral heads in the intertidal zone demonstrates that interseismic submergence has now nearly equals coseismic emergence that accompanied those earthquakes. The interseismic strains accumulated along this reach of the megathrust have thus approached or exceeded the levels relieved in 1797 and 1833.
