It is widely believed that the political problems of the Middle
East date back to the era of World War I, when European colonial
powers unilaterally imposed artificial borders on the post-Ottoman
...world in postwar agreements. This book offers a new account of how
the Great War unmade and then remade the political order of the
region. Ranging from Morocco to Iran and spanning the eve of the
Great War into the 1930s, it demonstrates that the modern Middle
East was shaped through complex and violent power struggles among
local and international actors. Jonathan Wyrtzen shows how the
cataclysm of the war opened new possibilities for both European and
local actors to reimagine post-Ottoman futures. After the 1914-1918
phase of the war, violent conflicts between competing political
visions continued across the region. In these extended struggles,
the greater Middle East was reforged. Wyrtzen emphasizes the
intersections of local and colonial projects and the entwined
processes through which states were made, identities transformed,
and boundaries drawn. This book's vast scope encompasses successful
state-building projects such as the Turkish Republic and the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as short-lived political
units-including the Rif Republic in Morocco, the Sanusi state in
eastern Libya, a Greater Syria, and attempted Kurdish states-that
nonetheless left traces on the map of the region. Drawing on a wide
range of sources, Worldmaking in the Long Great War
retells the origin story of the modern Middle East.

Millions of Mexican men crossed into the United States to find work. They took low-level positions that few Americans wanted and sent money back to communities that depended on their support. They periodically returned to Mexico, living their lives in both countries. After 1986, however, US authorities disrupted this back-and-forth movement by strengthening border controls. Many Mexican men chose to remain in the United States permanently for fear of not being able to come back north if they returned to Mexico. For them, the United States became a jaula de oro —a cage of gold. Undocumented Lives tells the story of Mexican migrants who were compelled to bring their families across the border and raise a generation of undocumented children.

The review examines a monograph devoted to the history of the Orthodox parish in Russia in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. In fact, the author includes in his work an overview of a much broader ...time period: from the publication of the Spiritual Regulations of Theophan Prokopovich, to the present, which allows him to show how the synodal parish system was formed, what caused its crisis, how this crisis was overcome, and also briefly describe the history of the parish organization in the 20th — early 21st centuries. At the same time, the central part of the monograph is devoted to the period from the Great Reforms to the revolution of 1917. The book analyzes in detail the main components of the parish system crisis: the gap between the parish and the peasant community, deprivation of the parish’s independence with the constant increase in fiscal and administrative pressure on it, and growing social distance between parishioners and clergy. The main focus is on the attempts to resolve the parish crisis. The book examines both discussions on the parish issue and practical attempts to implement local transformations, as well as examples that supporters of parish reform could focus on. The discussion around the parish issue (as it is covered in the monograph) focuses on many social problems of the Russian Empire: it is not accidental that it was transferred to the official level during the revolution of 1905–1907. The monograph examines the positions of various actors involved in the struggle for the reform of the parish: parishioners (primarily peasants), parish clergy, episcopate, professors of the theological school, chief prosecutors of the Synod, zemstvo figures, deputies of the Duma, and representatives of the government. Various drafts of the parish charter are analyzed in detail, starting from the one proposed by the Pre-Council Convention and ending with that adopted by the Local Council of 1917–1918. The monograph contains vivid characteristics of various figures of the second half of 19th — early 20th centuries, given through the disclosure of a person’s position on the parish issue. The final part traces the fate of the Orthodox parish in the 20th — early 21st centuries.
This qualitative research examined the ways in which Israeli newspapers and websites covered the death of three Egyptian presidents: Gamal Abdel Nasser (1970), Anwar Sadat (1981), and Hosni Mubarak (2020) the week following their demise. The study describes and demonstrates how the Israeli press changed its attitude toward the Egyptian presidency over the years: from hostile enemy to true friend.
After Nasser died, the Israeli media portrayed a threatening and opposing image, and highlighted the hard line he had led against the state of Israel and the Jewish people. In contrast, after Sadat was assassinated, the Israeli press positioned itself as Sadat’s sole defenders, in contrast to Arab leaders, who denounced him. Furthermore, the Israeli media defined Sadat as a symbol of peace and even forgave and expressed understanding of his offensive role in the Yom Kippur War. In 2020, reportage on Mubarak’s death also reflected a dignified and friendly tone, compared to the criticism voiced by Egyptian citizens and politicians. Mubarak’s death also unveiled significant differences between the journalism on online websites and that of printed newspapers.
