Luigi Pareyson has so far been little known in the German-speaking world, although his works have been translated into many languages, as he is undoubtedly one of the founders of modern philosophical ...hermeneutics, along with Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. Because of his intellectual diversity, he has inspired many of his students, who include Umberto Eco and Gianni Vattimo, and opened up to them a broad spectrum ranging from idealist approaches to hermeneutics and aesthetic theory. The volume provides a diverse but at the same time coherent sketch of important motifs of his philosophy: the main features of his interpretation of Fichte and Schelling, the foundations of his "ontology of freedom," his philosophical hermeneutics of religious experience, the basic lines of his aesthetics, and finally considerations concerning the social function that philosophy would have. Like a common thread, an intellectual attitude of wonder runs through all these contributions. It is the attitude of not fully comprehending human existence and its freedom, the evil in history, the phenomenon of exuberant beauty, the interpretive power of myth, the inevitable otherness of the other and of the self itself. And it is precisely this astonishment that has led people - from the beginning until today - to philosophize.
Sir Y. K. Pao (Pao Yue-kong, 1918–1991), rose from modest origins to become, by the mid-1970s, the world’s largest private shipowner. His Hong Kong-based company World-Wide Shipping diversified into ...property, hotels, retail, media, telecommunications, airlines and banking — a hugely influential business empire at a time of rapid regional growth. A philanthropist with extensive international connections, Pao became an unofficial Chinese ambassador at large, forging a strong relationship with the architect of China’s reform, Deng Xiaoping, at the dawn of China’s economic transformation and during the discussions about Hong Kong’s future.Anna Pao Sohmen was at her father’s side during important events and key meetings with leaders around the world. In this affectionate yet unsentimental account, she recounts the pivotal role played by her father at a key historical juncture and the balance he struck between Chinese and British allegiance, between business and politics, and between capitalism and socialism.
This book explores how one of the world's most literary-oriented societies entered the modern visual era, beginning with the advent of photography in the nineteenth century, focusing then on ...literature's role in helping to shape cinema as a tool of official totalitarian culture during the Soviet period, and concluding with an examination of post-Soviet Russia's encounter with global television. As well as pioneering the exploration of this important new area in Slavic Studies, the book illuminates aspects of cultural theory by investigating how the Russian case affects general notions of literature's fate within post-literate culture, the ramifications of communism's fall for media globalization, and the applicability of text/image models to problems of intercultural change.
This study consists of a hermeneutic approach of the phenomenon of musical interaction as aesthetic experience, within the inter- and trans-cultural contexts of the post-1969 jazz. A critical review of the traditional musicological analysis on the subject of interaction in jazz was an essential tool for this work to propose a formalization of the hermeneutical concept of the “Interactional-Formative Space” IFS, which consists of a set of conditions that institutes the interactional aesthetic experience as a dynamic process of constitution and mutual recognition of the artistic rules that, regardless of the poetic agenda pre-adopted, can lead the improvised musical performance into being work of art. There are two key approaches to this conception, which we discuss in the first part of this work: the formativity theory of the Italian philosopher Luigi Pareyson, and the phenomenology and taxonomy of the music experience as audiotactile formativity of Vincenzo Caporaletti. Our main purpose is to build an in-depth view of some characteristics of the Pareysonian formativity, particularly the one regarding the isomorphism between the person and the work in process, alongside with the cultural-cognitive-anthropologic design of the audiotactile formativity theory, which results in a philological contribution to the conceptualization of Caporaletti, making way for a confrontation between these two theoretical systems and the general problem of the interaction. Finally, in the second part, we propose the formalization of the interpersonal, contextual, and systemic dimensions of the IFS and also a series of three analytical essays.
The division between the scholar-gentry class and the "people" was an enduring theme of the traditional Chinese agrarian-bureaucratic state. Twentieth- century elites recast this as a division ...between intellectuals and peasants and made the confrontation between the writing/intellectual self and the peasant "other" a central concern of literature. The author argues that, in the process, they created the "peasantry," the downtrodden rural masses represented as proper objects of political action and shifting ideological agendas. Throughout this transition, language or discourse has been not only a weapon of struggle but the center of controversy and contention. Because of this primacy of language, the author's main approach is the close reading or, rather, re-reading of significant narrative fictions from four literary generations to demonstrate how historical, ideological, and cultural issues are absorbed, articulated, and debated within the text. Three chapters each focus on one representative author. The fiction of Lu Xun (1881-1936), which initiated the literary preoccupation with the victimized peasant, is also about the identity crisis of the intellectual. Zhao Shuli (1906-1970), upheld by the Communist Party as a model "peasant writer," tragically exemplifies in his career the inherent contradictions of such an assigned role. In the post-Mao era, Gao Xiaosheng (1928—) uses the ironic play of language to present a more ambiguous peasant while deflating intellectual pretensions. The chapter on the last of the four "generations" examines several texts by Mo Yan (1956—), Han Shaogong (1952—), and Wang Anyi (1954—) as examples of "root-searching" fiction from the mid-1980's. While reaching back into the past, this fiction is paradoxically also experimental in technique: the encounter with the peasant leads to questions about the self- construction of the intellectual and the nature of narrative representation itself. Throughout, the focus is on texts in which some sort of representation or stand-in of the writer/intellectual self is present—as character, as witness, as center of consciousness, or as first-person or obtrusive narrator. Each story catches the writer in a self-reflective mode, the confrontation with the peasant "other" providing a theater for acting out varying dramas of identity, power, ideology, political engagement, and self-representation.
The current transformation of many Eastern European societies is impossible to understand without comprehending the intellectual struggles surrounding nationalism in the region. Anthropologist ...Katherine Verdery shows how the example of Romania suggests that current ethnic tensions come not from a resurrection of pre-Communist Nationalism but from the strengthening of national ideologies under Communist Party rule.
