In the early 1980s, China undertook a massive reform that dismantled its socialist rural collectives and divided the land among millions of small peasant families. Known as the decollectivization ...campaign, it is one of the most significant reforms in China's transition to a market economy. From the beginning, the official Chinese accounts, and many academic writings, uncritically portray this campaign as a huge success, both for the peasants and the economy as a whole. This mainstream history argues that the rural communes, suffering from inefficiency, greatly improved agricultural productivity under the decollectivization reform. It also describes how the peasants, due to their dissatisfaction with the rural regime, spontaneously organized and collectively dismantled the collective system. A closer examination suggests a much different and more nuanced story. By combining historical archives, field work, and critical statistical examinations, From Commune to Capitalism argues that the decollectivization campaign was neither a bottom-up, spontaneous peasant movement, nor necessarily efficiency-improving. On the contrary, the reform was mainly a top-down, coercive campaign, and most of the efficiency gains came from simply increasing the usage of inputs, such as land and labor, rather than institutional changes. The book also asks an important question: Why did most of the peasants peacefully accept this reform? Zhun Xu answers that the problems of the communes contributed to the passiveness of the peasantry; that decollectivization, by depoliticizing the peasantry and freeing massive rural labor to compete with the urban workers, served as both the political and economic basis for consequent Chinese neoliberal reforms and a massive increase in all forms of economic, political, and social inequality. Decollectivization was, indeed, a huge success, although far from the sort suggested by mainstream accounts.

This study analyzes coverage of the deaths of Hayim Nachman Bialik, Shmuel Yosef Agnon, and Nathan Alterman in seven Hebraic and Israeli daily newspapers. The newspapers examined during the 30 days ...after Bialik’s death in July 1934 were Haaretz, Doar Hayom, and Davar. Those perused during the 30 days after Agnon’s and Alterman’s passing in February and March 1970 were Haaretz, Davar, Yedioth Ahronoth, Al Hamishmar, Hatzofe, Maariv, and Hamodia. In light of the central role of Bialik, Agnon, and Alterman in Jewish-Israeli culture, treatment of their deaths included front page coverage, reports from the burial ceremonies, editorials, special sections dedicated to the deceased, photographs, and more. While many studies have focused on links between politicians and the media, few have examined relations between cultural figures and the media. This study, therefore, offers an empiric-historic line of investigation concerning the ways that Hebraic and Israeli newspapers covered the deaths of a well-known author, Agnon, and two poets, Bialik and Alterman.
Press coverage of Bialik’s death reflected his public image as a national cultural hero who united the Jewish people. Although Bialik did not hold an official position within the Jewish Agency prior to his death, the Agency transported his coffin (aron) from Vienna, Austria, via Larnaca, Cyprus, and organized his burial ceremony in the old Jewish cemetery in Tel Aviv. Agnon was lauded in the Israeli press as an extraordinary writer. The newspapers emphasized his uniqueness by presenting him as superior to American and European authors who had also won the Nobel Prize in Literature. They thus played a key role in helping to shape and reconstruct his public image.
After Alterman’s death, the press highlighted his political impact by publishing obituaries by governmental institutions, reporting on eulogies and speeches given by leading politicians, such as Moshe Dayan, and linking his poems to central events in the history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Reducing animal product consumption has benefits for population health and the environment. The relationship between vegetarianism and mental health, however, remains poorly understood. This study ...explores this relationship in a nationally representative cohort in Great Britain.
We use data from the 1970 British Cohort Study, which collected information on vegetarianism at age 30 in 2000 (n = 11,204) and psychological distress (PD) at ages 26, 30, 34, 42, and 46–48 in 2016/18. We first developed a statistical adjustment strategy by regressing PD at age 30 on vegetarianism and 14 confounders measured at ages 10 and 26. We then ran multilevel growth curve models, testing whether within-person changes in PD between ages 30 and 46–48 differed by vegetarianism, before and after statistical adjustment.
At age 30, 4.5 % of participants reported being vegetarian. In the cross-sectional models at age 30, vegetarians reported more distress compared with non-vegetarians in bivariate analysis (b = 0.30, 95%CI 0.09, 0.52), but this difference disappeared in the fully-adjusted model (b = 0.02, 95%CI −0.17, 0.21). In the longitudinal models between ages 30 and 46/48, there were no differences in within-person changes in psychological distress between vegetarians and non-vegetarians (p = .723). Sensitivity analyses using red meat consumption yielded similar findings.
In this British cohort, vegetarianism at age 30 was not associated with changes in psychological distress during mid-adulthood. Since psychological distress in early adulthood predicted vegetarianism at age 30, more studies are needed to disentangle the progression of this relationship over the life-course.
•Most studies on vegetarianism and mental health are methodologically weak.•Vegetarianism at age 30 was not associated with subsequent changes in psychological distress in the 1970 British Cohort Study.•Vegetarianism and mental health may still be related during the transition to aduthood.

The moment I felt Rafa-louse jump onto my ear I began to run before anyone from the upper offices appeared transformed into a dog or cat. There are no words in rat dreams, only leftover inventory ...that you more or less remember. Before returning to the building I climb a desiccated tree or pile of debris to watch dawn break.
