On 11 August 2015, China revamped its procedure for setting the official central parity of the renminbi (RMB) against the US dollar. Our empirical investigation suggests that the intertemporal ...dynamics of China's central parity shifted after this policy change, although the deviation of the RMB offshore rate from the central parity and the US dollar index remained the two significant determinants of central parity after the policy change. In contrast, the VIX index only offered explanatory power up to August 2015. Thereafter, the onshore RMB rate and the difference between the 1‐month offshore and onshore RMB forward points have significant impacts on the central parity. While the US dollar index effect remains, we find no evidence of a rate‐fixing role for the RMB exchange rate against the currency basket announced by China in December 2015.
Tanzania's National Food Reserve Agency has a mandate to ensure food security through procuring, reserving and recycling grain (primarily maize) in a cost‐effective manner. This mandate excludes a ...price stabilization role. Procurement prices, based on production costs, are often set above market prices to encourage production. Several disbursements channels exist: grain provided free or at a discount to targeted vulnerable households; subsidized sales to millers; and sales to prisons or nongovernmental aid programs, typically at market‐related prices. Given the perception that these activities are distortive, we use time‐series econometrics to model maize price dynamics in select wholesale markets to capture the Agency's market impact. We find that its pricing strategy had an insignificant impact on prices during 2010/11–2014/15 despite a fairly significant presence in at least some regional markets. We recommend that the Agency reconsiders offering a price premium on procured maize or selling maize at discount to millers, as limited market spill‐over effects imply the benefits are captured by only a few, even though its practice of providing subsidized or free maize to vulnerable people is not in question. Furthermore, current storage capacity expansion plans are not required and inconsistent with its food security mandate.
Although sports teams around the world can no longer use the reserve clause to bind their players forever, teams can still exert considerable monopsony power early in the players’ careers. ...Institutional and cultural factors specific to Nippon Professional Baseball and to Japan suggest that this monopsony power is stronger and longer-lasting in Japan than in other countries. We use techniques associated with the Oaxaca decomposition to simulate the impact of free agency on the pay of baseball players in Japan who have not yet reached free agency. We find that free agency in Japan has a large impact on pay but that this increase is quite small relative to the impact in Major League Baseball.

Este artículo caracteriza el proceso de gestión editorial llevado a cabo durante el período comprendido entre el año 2010 hasta el 2015 en la Revista Salus. Con el mismo se pretende dar a conocer no ...sólo el alcance de esta gestión, sino también la producción de artículos científicos publicados en la revista, como órgano de divulgación científica multidisciplinaria, editado por la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Carabobo, Valencia - Venezuela. Actualmente la revista Salus se publica en formatos impreso y electrónico, con visibilidad internacional y libre acceso a través de repositorios internacionales y nacionales. Este trabajo realiza una descripción detallada del flujo editorial utilizado por la revista y al que se someten los artículos enviados a la misma. Los resultados muestran que tipos de manuscritos se publican, cuántos son recibidos y tramitados, así como el tiempo promedio de duración del arbitraje y de todo el proceso editorial. Con este manuscrito se deja constancia de los años de gestión citados, donde se ha trabajado para mejorar la calidad científica, distribución y difusión de la Revista Salus, tal como exige el nivel actual nacional y latinoamericano. Sin embargo, queda mucho por hacer, por mejorar y por continuar. Como producto de la evaluación que se genera del presente trabajo, surge como propuesta, adscribirse o diseñar un sistema automatizado de gestión editorial que, sin duda alguna, contribuirá a la esperada profesionalización de la edición científica.
