Chronic absenteeism can impact high school students’ long- and short-term development, especially in socio-economically challenged areas such as the Texas-Mexico border. We aimed to identify ...effective public school absenteeism policies and provide a roadmap for further investigation and state policy advocacy. This study analyzed four district-level school absenteeism policies in 88 public school districts along the Texas-Mexico border: requiring parental notification after one absence, offering incentives for student attendance, assignment of a Truancy Prevention Facilitator, and punishing students for absenteeism. District policies were collected through a review of district websites, student handbooks, codes of conduct, District Improvement Plans, and District of Innovation Plans. The chronic absenteeism and emergent bilingual/English learner (EB/EL) absenteeism rates reported in Texas Education Agency Texas Academic Performance Reports for grades 9-12 were utilized as attendance indicators. Hierarchical linear modeling, an ordinary least square regression-based analysis, was used to examine association relationships between the policies as independent variables and absenteeism rates as the dependent variables. School districts that do not offer attendance incentives and assign officers as truancy prevention facilitators have the highest predicted total chronic absenteeism rate; districts that do not offer attendance incentives and assign support services personnel as truancy prevention facilitators have the highest predicted EB/EL absenteeism rate. Districts with attendance incentives also are associated with higher EB/EL absenteeism. Identifying effective school policies to reduce chronic absenteeism will help districts better tailor the implementation of state policies and promote access to education and services.
The different approaches to absenteeism that have been made from different branches of science: economic, legal, medical and psychosocial, don’t help to define the concept and also they contribute to ...generate confusion. Multiple invocations of the term move on a ladder of generality at which most intension negatively correlated with the extension. Because when any absence from work is assimilated to absenteeism, almost everything fits; but the concept becomes vague and it fates in a jumble of adjectives that do not allow advance to their understanding. However, if we call absenteeism only the behaviors that have the basic attributes, many of the definitions we have discussed will not focus on absenteeism , but in return , we have a conceptual reference from which to study and to approach the phenomenon on public administration. For us, there are three necessary conditions, but not enough by themselves, they can face the phenomenon of absenteeism as a political science interest: the absence, lack of enabling cause and unproductive.
ObjectivesAs part of the worldwide My Migraine Voice survey, this study evaluated the real-world healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and impact on work and activity impairment among people living ...with migraine in the United Kingdom (UK).MethodsAn analysis was conducted using UK subset data from My Migraine Voice survey: a worldwide, cross-sectional, online study including respondents (≥18 years), with ≥4 monthly migraine days, with 90% having used preventive migraine treatment in the preceding three months. HRU (Emergency room ER visits and hospitalisations) and impact of migraine on work and daily activities were evaluated and compared amongst different preventive treatment failure (TF) patient subgroups.ResultsOf the 690 respondents, 17% had visited ER (average 2.8 times/year), and 13% were hospitalised (average 3.0 days). Participants reported 13% missed working time (absenteeism), 52% reduction in productivity (presenteeism), and 58% reduction in both overall work productivity and daily activities due to migraine in last 7-days. HRU, absenteeism and presenteeism was higher in those with ≥2 TF vs patients with no TF.ConclusionThis study demonstrates the burden among patients with migraine in terms of HRU, work productivity loss, and activity impairment. The impact is increased in patients who have had ≥2 preventive treatment failures.
Background: Menstruation is a significant event during adolescence. It is often a challenging period for adolescent girls since it poses significant challenges. The stigma associated with ...menstruation, difficulties due to menstrual disorders, and period poverty can often lead to school absenteeism and school dropout among girls. Objectives: 1) To identify menstrual characteristics and explore the symptoms associated with menstrual cycles among adolescent schoolgirls of Aligarh. 2) To examine whether adolescent schoolgirls experience absenteeism during menstruation and to elucidate the reasons for such occurrences. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study carried out among adolescent school girls of Aligarh. Two urban and two rural schools were selected randomly from the co-educational schools in Aligarh, with inclusion criteria comprising adolescent girls in grades six to ten who had experienced menarche at least six months prior. Parental consent and participant assent were obtained, resulting in the participation of 164 students. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire method. Results: The respondents’ average age was 14.5±1.33 years, with 84.1% exhibiting regular menstrual cycles out of the 164 participants. The mean age at menarche was 12.7±1.02, and the average duration of menstruation was 4.90±1.54 days. Only 12% of students did not experience pain during menstruation, while the majority reported mild (35.4%), pain only on the first day (30.5%), or excessive (2.8%) pain. Predominant pre-menstrual symptoms included irritability, mood disturbances, and breast tenderness. Despite these challenges, a majority of students (84.1%) affirmed not taking leave during menstruation. Among those who did, the reasons included a lack of facilities for changing pads, insufficient disposal systems for pads, and dysmenorrhoea. Conclusion: This study sheds light on the menstrual characteristics and challenges faced by adolescent schoolgirls in Aligarh. Despite the challenges, the students attend school during menstruation which shows the importance of targeted interventions to address the challenges
Using appraisal theory, this research examined targets' emotional responses to workplace incivility, and how these responses impact targets' behavioral responses. Targets who reported greater ...incivility reported greater anger, fear, and sadness. Targets' anger was associated with more direct aggression against the instigators; targets' fear was associated with indirect aggression against instigators, absenteeism, and exit; and targets' sadness was associated with absenteeism. Status moderated the effects of fear and sadness. Our results underscore the need for organizations to manage civility so that they and their employees can avoid substantial direct and indirect costs associated with workplace incivility. At a broader level, our results suggest the importance of developing greater awareness about the harmful effects of fear and sadness in the workplace.
