During the mission dated 04/09/07-12/09/07, thirty two sugar beet field trials and 17 demonstration fields were surveyed. Among sugar beet pests and diseases that were observed in the region, ...Spodoptera (beet army worm) and Meloidogyne (root knot nematode) caused severe damage on sugar beet. Almost all of the fields of different locations were infected with the nematode. Late sowing dates (late June and early July) were slightly damaged by the nematode but, severely damaged by beet army worm. Observations showed that wheat, as a non-host main crop in the region, decreased the population density of the nematode, but the second crops such as bean, melon, watermelon, tomato and other vegetables as susceptible crops increased the population of the nematode as well as sugar beet. Plant density was low in several sugar beet fields, mostly due to applying 1.5 units of sugar beet seed per hectare because of its cost. Attack of Agrotis and inappropriate seedbed preparation were another reasons. Among the varieties, the variety Magnolia from KWS Company showed better performance than others in each sowing date. Basudin insecticide was soil-applied before planting. Its application in the soil is not effective in controlling Agrotis. Grass weeds were more important than broad-leaved weeds in the project area. High population densities of weed species were observed at the early sowing date, but weeds were not problematic in the third and fourth sowing dates (during June and early July).
