Introduction This is a series of conversations on literature, ranging from Xi Xi's own fiction and poetry, to a discussion of reading and writing in general, and her views on this and that. Because I ...felt that our exchange was rather interesting, I picked up my pen to write down what Xi Xi had to say about her writings, as well as some other topics. Sometimes it was a dialogue, although I did not say much; sometimes it was like her monologue, and I was merely listening. Because the conversation was very long (it started in March 1982), continuing on and off, and the topics covered were quite broad, I ended up writing, reading, and thinking at the same time. Born in Tokyo, Japan, on January 1, 1935, Eiko Kadono is one of the most respected and well-known authors of children's literature in Japan. Her books have been deeply influential for several ...generations of Japanese children. She has won numerous national and international awards—including the 1985 Noma Prize for Children's Literature, the 1985 Shogakukan Children's Publication Culture Award, the 1986 IBBY Honor List, the 2016 Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award, and finally the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award. Majo no Takkyuubin (Kiki's Delivery Service, 1985) is perhaps her most famous book, having been adapted into an internationally acclaimed animated film by Studio Ghibli. Her work includes over two hundred picturebooks, novels, and translations. Many of her stories are contemporary and modern fantasy books. Her books tend to feature characters as witches, spirits, and shadow creatures, as well as socially neglected groups such as the elderly, children, and, women.
How are emotions are expressed in Italian and in Norwegian? What are the reasons that cause people to consider Italian a more emotive language compared to the Germanic languages? To answer these ...questions, two translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are analyzed: “The Emperor’s New Clothes” (Il vestito nuovo dell’Imperatore / Keiserens nye klær) and “The Ugly Duckling” (Il brutto anitroccolo / Den stygge andungen). The analysis focuses on interjections and verbs of speech. In the Italian translations, more interjections are used and the verbs of speech are more expressive (in particular, esclamare ‘to exclaim’). In the Norwegian translations, interjections are rare, sometimes different constructions are used instead, and the verbs are often more neutral (in particular, å si ‘to say’).
Ausgehend von der durch Spivak (1988) bekannt gemachten Gruppe der Subalternen erörtert dieser Aufsatz, wie Suniti Namjoshis Feminist Fables diesen eine Stimme verleiht. Namjoshis LSBTQ-Standpunkt ...und -Anliegen treten in ihren Erzählungen deutlich hervor. Sie stellen die Gramsci'sche Hegemonie in Frage, treten ihr entgegen und kritisieren sie, indem sie dem Pantachantra, Aesops Fabeln und Andersens Märchen den Prozess machen. Letztlich zielt dieser Aufsatz darauf ab, die Ausdrucksweisen der Subalternität aufzuzeigen, sowie darzulegen, welche moralischen Lehren feministische LSBTQ-Fabeln im Zusammenhang mit einer Marginalisierung in den Vordergrund rücken.

To be sure, bloodstains on a bedsheet do not have inherent meaning, but in the context of the ritual described in Dinesen's story, they are interpreted to signify a single thing: that on her wedding night, the bride was a virgin. ...the morning sheet ritual is in place to bear out an expected, routine reading of sexual integrity, a fact emphasized by the choice of tense in "the Chamberlain would solemnly proclaim," which denotes a habitual action. ...it entails more than twice the number of words.

Martin McDonagh’s A Very Very Very Dark Matter (2018) explores how the stories of exploited people have been written out of history. The play includes several storytellers, and it both replicates and ...deviates from the details of numerous existing narratives, including McDonagh’s own plays. Set in 1857, the play imagines that Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales were written by a pygmy woman from the Belgian Congo who has traveled back in time; Hans calls her Marjory and keeps her in a box in his attic. Eventually Marjory writes herself out of the box and departs for Africa to prevent the colonization of her people. Dark Matter compels us to question the narratives about the past that have become embedded in our culture and to uncover the facts that official accounts have altered or suppressed; rewriting history is acceptable only in imaginative storytelling, as an act of poetic justice. King Leopold of Belgium was especially notorious for his merciless treatment of the Congolese, who were pressed into service on the rubber plantations. Lanters's discussion places the play within ...this historical and artistic setting with the European and American treatment of the Blacks as less than human including exhibiting some of them as freaks, natural oddities, and sub-humans or creatures on an evolutionary ladder leading to White perfection, while enslaving native populations to extract natural resources to fuel the "home" country's prosperity. The contemporary clinical psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison demonstrated the truth in Dryden's observation in important books using her clinical experience to evaluate several artists, poets, and musicians, including Touched with Tire (1993), An Unquiet Mind (1995), Night Tails Tast (1999), and most recently Robert Lowell: Setting the River on Tire (2017). Lowell being fully conscious "of its relevance . . . made it a creative force in his writing . . . as the duality of mania and discipline, insanity and sanity was the major organizing force of his life."
The entremés, never represented in 1615, became a classic text and at the same time an object of revision, eventually turning into a hypotext for numerous authors who, at different times, turned ...their gaze to the cervantine text to provide their own version. In this paper, we will focus on analyzing the repercussion that El retablo de las maravillas had in Rafael Dieste and Lauro Olmo, two playwrights who recreated new and marvelous retablos from the cervantine piece and established an extremely interesting and fruitful network of intertextualities from multiple perspectives. The rewriting and updating of a classic text such as Cervantes' entremés also offers a great potential for the teaching of literature, aspect to which we devote a brief final reflection. In addition to the Spiegel best-seller lists, statistical analysis of the German book market from the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers & Booksellers Association) and ...published in Buch und Buchhandel in Zahlen are a main source for my analysis. The following analysis is based on Scandinavian books in German translation that have reached at least twentieth place on the Spiegel best-seller lists "Hardcover Belletristik" Hardcover Fiction, "Paperback Belletristik," and "Taschenbuch Belletristik" Paperback Fiction between 1993 and 2014.1 I have chosen 1993 as the starting point of my research period because it is the year Gaarder's Sophie's World appeared in German translation. Since 2009, Scandinavian literature is consistently represented by more than 350 translated titles per year, and it seems that the numbers are climbing. In 2011, the Frankfurt Book Fair featured Iceland and Icelandic literature as their so-called "Guest of Honor," with a substantial promotional program and translation fund provided by the Icelandic project team "Sagenhaftes Island" (Fabulous Iceland) and financial support of the Icelandic government.
