This innovative volume is an extended intellectual conversation about the ways personal lives are being undone and remade today. Examining the ethnography of the modern subject, this preeminent group ...of scholars probes the continuity and diversity of modes of personhood across a range of Western and non-Western societies. Contributors consider what happens to individual subjectivity when stable or imagined environments such as nations and communities are transformed or displaced by free trade economics, terrorism, and war; how new information and medical technologies reshape the relation one has to oneself; and which forms of subjectivity and life possibilities are produced against a world in pieces. The transdisciplinary conversation includes anthropologists, historians of science, psychologists, a literary critic, a philosopher, physicians, and an economist. The authors touch on how we think and write about contingency, human agency, and ethics today.
Sommeren 1879 reiste den italienske antropologen, professoren og senatoren Paolo Mantegazza til Norge sammen med sin noe yngre kollega Stephen Sommier. Det uttrykte målet for reisen var å erverve ...kunnskap om samene, som de to italienerne anså som et av de «mest interessante og minst studerte folkene i Europa». Kunnskapsproduksjonen skjedde i form av antropometriske mål og portrettfotografier, og reisen resulterte i to publiserte bøker: en kombinert reisebeskrivelse og etnografisk beskrivelse, og et album med antropometriske data, inkludert ca. hundre fotografier. Artikkelen kontekstualiserer Mantegazzas og Sommiers reise og kunnskapsproduksjon, med vekt på de fotografiene de tok. Med hjelp av fotografiene og blant annet samtidige antropologiske tidsskrift situeres reisen innenfor rammene av sin tids rasevitenskap. Det argumenteres for at fotografiene må ses som ledd i et større vitenskapelig prosjekt som handlet om å gjøre menneskelige forskjeller målbare, men også for at deres eksistens utfordrer en reduksjonistisk forståelse av 1870- og 1780-årenes antropologi som bare interessert i målbare forskjeller.
Anthropologically speaking, interrelation between text and several practices of muslim community in Indonesia (that prove their obedience to the Islamic norms and official doctrine), is in fact ...heterodox. This premise verifies various elements of the local culture that always interweave and work together in dialogue through rituals and symbols. In shaping this new perspective of Anthropology of Islam, some Islamisists made claim the major tasks of ethnographers to depicts Islam with diverse expressions of meaning, emotion, as well feeling, as practiced by Muslims, whom are the object of authority and the text. This point of view shows the importance of the study of the texts in a broader ethnographic process. The role of the latter study is to strengthen the cultural anthropology of the Muslim community and at the same time discover the power and authority of the text as an interpretive resources and practices for muslim communities.
What is existential anthropology, and how would you define it? What has been gained by using existential perspectives in your fieldwork and writing? Editors Michael Jackson and Albert Piette each ...invited anthropologists on both sides of the Atlantic to address these questions and explore how various approaches to the human condition might be brought together on the levels of method and of theory. Both editors also bring their own perspective: while Jackson has drawn on phenomenology, deploying the concepts of intersubjectivity, lifeworld, experience, existential mobility, and event, Piette has drawn on Heidegger's Dasein-analysis, and developed a phenomenographical method for the observation and description of human beings in their singularity and ever-changing situations.
The purpose of this research is to find the implementation of living Qur’an in Annyorong Lopi (boat launch) Pinisi tradition in Bulukumba. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with an ...anthropological approach to the Qur’an. Primary data sources were obtained from Panrita Lopi (boat maker), boat entrepreneur, religious figure, cultural figure, and local government. Data was collected through a series of observation methods, interviews, documentation, secondary data from literature books, journals, the internet, and other complementary data. The research results found the implementation of living Qur’an in Annyorong Lopi (boat launch) Pinisi tradition, which are the values of the Qur’an that live amid Panrita Lopi (boat marker) society by analyzing the recitation of dialect Konjo language prayers derived from the Qur’an. It also found the implementation of anthropology of the Qur’an reviewed from the sociological aspect and the phenomenological aspect in the process of making Pinisi boats to the Annyorong Lopi (boat launch) tradition. The tradition of Annyorong Lopi (boat launch) Pinisi is done as a proof of gratitude and prayer of salvation for the completion of the Pinisi boat.الملخصيهدف هذا البحث إلى إيجاد تنفيذ القرآن الحي في تقليد Annyorong Lopi Pinisi (إطلاق السفينة) في بولوكومبا. يستخدم هذا البحث بالنهج الأنثروبولوجي القرآن. مصادر البيانات الأساسي التي تم الحصول عليها من Panrita Lopi (صانع السفينة) ورائد الأعمال في السفينة والشخصية الدينية و الثقافي والحكومة المحلية. البيانات التي تم جمعها من خلال سلسلة من أساليب المراقبة والمقابلات والوثائق والبيانات الثانية من الكتب والمجلات والإنترنت وغيرها من البيانات التكميلية. وجدت نتائج هذا البحث إلى إيجاد تنفيذ القرآن الحي في تقليد Annyorong Lopi Pinisi أن هناك قيم القرآن الكريم التي تعيش في وسط Panrita Lopi (صانع السفينة) المجتمع من خلال تحليل تلاوة الدعاء بالهجة اللغة Konjo وهي المستمدة من القرآن. وجدت أن تنفيذ الأنثروبولوجيا من القرآن استعرض من الجانب الاجتماعي و الجانب الظاهري في عملية صنع السفينةPinisi حتى تقليدAnnyorong Lopi . تقليدAnnyorong Lopi Pinisi يتم كدليل على الامتنان والدعاء السلامة من البلاء من أجل الخلاص لاستكمال السفينة Pinisi.

Fra januar 2017 er alle norske sosialhjelpsmottakere under 30 år forpliktet til å delta i arbeidsrelatert aktivitet – det vil si at de har aktivitetsplikt. Resiprositet er en politisk begrunnelse for ...aktivitetsplikten, som er formulert i sosialtjenesteloven § 20a. Lovbestemmelsen sier at det skal stilles vilkår om aktivitet for tildeling av økonomisk stønad til personer under 30 år. Men hva betyr dette for målgruppen? Basert på kvalitative intervjuer med unge sosialhjelpsmottakere undersøker artikkelen deres erfaringer med aktivitetsplikt. To dimensjoner er tydelige: aktivitetsplikt som en sosial praksis og aktivitetsplikt som en sanksjonerende praksis. Disse dimensjonene analyserer vi som henholdsvis aktivitetspliktens innside og utside, det vil si en byttemoral med et kontinuum av ulike resiprositetsformer. Funnene viser at aktivitetsplikten kan gi stønadsmottakerne mulighet til å komme seg ut av en vanskelig situasjon og nærmere arbeidslivet. Men Navs tette oppfølging kombinert med sanksjoner er også tvetydig og kan legge begrensninger på de unge voksnes bestrebelser med å klare seg selv.
Sammendrag Dette er introduksjonen til et spesialnummer om entreprenørskap. Det forteller hvordan entreprenørskapsbegrepet kom inn i antropologien på 1960-tallet og dets betydning for antropologiens ...kjernevirksomhet – å frembringe kunnskap om hvordan mennesker skaper mennesker og samfunn. Deretter følger en kritisk vurdering av fremveksten av en global entreprenørskapsdiskurs, fra proto-økonomenes spede forsøk på å modellere de økonomiske prosessene i landbruket til et verdensomspennende neoliberalt regime for økonomisk vekst. Deretter situerer vi entreprenørskap i både den norske og den internasjonale antropologien, gjennom drøfting av teori og empiri i tre verker fra ulike tidsepoker: Fredrik Barth (1963), Eldar Bråten (2013) og Richard Pfeilstetter (2022). Den siste delen introduserer de åtte artiklene som følger, og avsluttes med to innsikter om hva antropologiske studier av entreprenørskap bidrar med.
This article focuses on the potential of travelling which spiritual pilgrims to India experience as opportunity for self transformation. In this process, travelling offers contact with “otherness” ...and a sense of critical distance from everyday values and ideas. The article explores symbolic meanings of travel as a secular ritual involving ruptures with the ordinary. Seeing them as a driving force behind the creation of relationships between different traditions, this article looks at encounters from an anthropological perspective. Based on my empirical research on the intentions of foreign travellers in India and by studying their motivations and searches, I argue that such travels can be understood as a means for travellers not only to find others but also to encounter themselves.
Den här artikeln fokuserar på den potential resande har att fungera som en möjlighet för upplevd själv-transformation, via kontakt med ”annorlundahet” och genom att skapa en kritisk distans från vardagsvärderingar och -idéer. Den undersöker symboliska betydelser som resor kan få i egenskap av ett slags sekulära ritualer som innebär brott med ”det vanliga”. Med utgångspunkten att möten (encounters) utgör en drivkraft för relationsskapande mellan olika traditioner undersöker artikeln sådana möten utifrån ett antropologiskt perspektiv. Genom en empirisk studie av utländska resenärer i Indien och deras motiveringar och sökanden, menar jag att deras resor kan förstås som ett medel för dem att inte bara möta andra människor utan också för att möta sig själva.
A proposal that extends the enactive approach developed in cognitive science and philosophy of mind to issues in affective science.
In The Feeling Body, Giovanna Colombetti takes ideas from the ...enactive approach developed over the last twenty years in cognitive science and philosophy of mind and applies them for the first time to affective science—the study of emotions, moods, and feelings. She argues that enactivism entails a view of cognition as not just embodied but also intrinsically affective, and she elaborates on the implications of this claim for the study of emotion in psychology and neuroscience.
In the course of her discussion, Colombetti focuses on long-debated issues in affective science, including the notion of basic emotions, the nature of appraisal and its relationship to bodily arousal, the place of bodily feelings in emotion experience, the neurophysiological study of emotion experience, and the bodily nature of our encounters with others. Drawing on enactivist tools such as dynamical systems theory, the notion of the lived body, neurophenomenology, and phenomenological accounts of empathy, Colombetti advances a novel approach to these traditional issues that does justice to their complexity. Doing so, she also expands the enactive approach into a further domain of inquiry, one that has more generally been neglected by the embodied-embedded approach in the philosophy of cognitive science.
Med afsæt i et komposteringsprojekt i en dansk, kommunal børnehave undersøger vi, hvilke former for magt og modstand der kommer i spil, når politiske ambitioner om øget grøn omstilling og bæredygtig ...affaldshåndtering kobles med naturpædagogiske projekter. Inspireret af nymaterielle teorier om handling, magt og modstand viser vi, hvordan komposteringsaktiviteter i børnehaven – til trods for at de præsenteres som et spørgsmål om apolitisk naturfaglig viden – rummer forskellige former for mikropolitisk magt og modstand, der udfordrer det offentlige systems ambitioner om øget grøn omstilling og den form for styring af borgerne, dette system bygger på. Den mikropolitiske modstand ligger især indlejret i pædagogiske tiltag for at sanseliggøre, af-anonymisere og lokalisere affaldet og i lokale forhandlinger om implementering af offentlig affaldssortering i børnehaven. I artiklen argumenteres endvidere for, at et forskningsfokus på sådanne mikropolitiske aspekter af affaldshåndtering og kompostering kan bidrage til at synliggøre og udvikle alternative livsformer og løsninger.
