Representing the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, art history, architecture, history of architecture, religious studies, and Islamic studies, the volume’s contributors consider sonic performances ranging from poetry recitation to art, folk, popular, and ritual musics—as well as religious expressions that are not usually labeled as “music" from an Islamic perspective—in relation to monumental, vernacular, ephemeral, and landscape architectures; interior design; decoration and furniture; urban planning; and geography. Underscoring the intimate relationship between traditional Muslim sonic performances, such as the recitation of the Qur’an or devotional songs, and conventional Muslim architectural spaces, from mosques and Sufi shrines to historic aristocratic villas, gardens, and gymnasiums, the book reveals Islam as an ideal site for investigating the relationship between sound and architecture, which in turn proves to be an innovative and significant angle from which to explore Muslim cultures.

Cases from different church denominations are presented from both Egypt and Mediterranean countries in Western Europe, thus discussing the dialect between art and architecture. The domain of the church was selected for this dialect, as art is employed affluently in many worship houses in general and churches specifically, deeming the task viable and comprehensible.

Florentine careers ...of three major sculptors--Giambologna,
Bartolomeo Ammanati, and Vincenzo Danti--as they negotiated the
politics of the Medici court and eyed one another's work, setting
new aims for their art in the process. Only through a comparative
look at Giambologna and his contemporaries, it argues, can we
understand them individually--or understand the period in which
they worked. Michael Cole shows how the concerns of central Italian
artists changed during the last decades of the Cinquecento. Whereas
their predecessors had focused on specific objects and on the
particularities of materials, late sixteenth-century sculptors
turned their attention to models and design. The iconic figure gave
way to the pose, individualized characters to abstractions. Above
all, the multiplicity of master crafts that had once divided
sculptors into those who fashioned gold or bronze or stone yielded
to a more unifying aspiration, as nearly every ambitious sculptor,
whatever his training, strove to become an architect.
This book explores the history of art and architecture in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 18th century to the uprising against the Russian occupation of 1863-64. It serves to introduce ...the English-language reader to research produced by East European scholars. The geographical area under discussion consists of the modern nation states of Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine, which from 1772 were incorporated into the empires of Russia, Austria, and Prussia. One of the major questions raised is, what became of the old Commonwealth's artistic and cultural traditions under the rule of these alien powers? The book strives to do justice to the history of all the national groups involved, even though the region was heavily Polonised from the 16th century onwards. The art, architecture, and culture introduced from western Europe are analysed in their effects not only on Polish culture, but also on that of the Orthodox and Uniate Ruthenians (Ukrainians), on the Jewish settlement and on those of the Karaime and Islamic Tatars. An additional concern is the history, art and architecture of the Baltic Germans in the Latvian region. The book suggests a critical approach involving alternative models to those of nationalistic schools of art. It is geography that dictates the writing of history, rather than national identity.

It is assumed that the impact of natural and man-made hazards on society in terms of damage cannot be avoided. To reduce potential disaster levels and to assess which policies have had a positive ...outcome, a careful comparison should take place on the procedures implemented in the management of crises.
