The purpose of this study is to present the office, organization and strategy of the Franque architectural agencies in Avignon and Paris. While the funds of the agencies have been scattered and lost, ...the analysis is based on the reading of private sources, notably a correspondence and a journal that take us into the intimacy and daily life of these architects. These documents also allow us to understand how these architects surrounded themselves in order to respond to the many commissions they received. Their collaborators were numerous, notably within their offices for the purpose of creating plans, drawings and contracts, but also on the building sites, whose management was supervised by trusted associates.
The present article offers an art-historical analysis of the indulgence letter issued in Avignon on 6 November 1347 for the monastery of Kostanjevica in present-day Slovenia. It is believed that a ...workshop responsible for writing and decorating indulgence letters was organized in Avignon after the Popes moved there from Rome, and several iconographic and stylistic affinities speak in favour of the Kostanjevica charter being decorated precisely in this work environment. The Avignon workshop supposedly expanded in the 1340s, which presumably led to the division of labour within the workshop, meaning that one charter’s decoration could be the result of a joint effort. The present article discusses possible evidence to corroborate or reject this statement in the case of the Kostanjevica indulgence letter.
The preaching of cardinals at papal Avignon is known to have been of importance in terms of the quantity of sermons. The almost complete loss of these sermons begs for other approaches to assess the ...preaching than to analyse the extant texts. On the basis of this author's PhD thesis, the cardinals are analysed to assess the importance of preaching materials as presented in the wills.
This article explores the visual responses (with political, spiritual and social connotations) to the visual statements about the role of Rome and the pope in Western Christendom made by Pope Urban V ...(1362-1370) at the time of his return to the Urbe from Avignon in 1367-9. It investigates the plurality of responses to these papal statements, the chain of further visual communications that these statements set in motion as well as their longue durée by engaging with the reception of the pontiff's powerful messages by different audiences, both secular and ecclesiastic, from Rome to the Italian peninsula more broadly, and southern France, in the following 50 years.
