Unpacks the diverse intellectual legacies woven into Badiou's work on contemporary polemics and political interventions
The 11 essays in this volume, including a new piece by Badiou himself, reflect ...the formative traditions that shape the background of his political thought. They intervene critically and evaluate the present state of Badiou's work, while also breaking new ground and creating new thresholds of political thought.
The contributors are a range of established scholars and rising theorists of the Badiou-effect. Each engages with the critical question of 'how to transmit the exception' politically. at the intersection of contemporary anti-imperial polemics and debates that strike at the heart of the post-modern condition (Lyotard), deconstruction (Derrida), psychoanalysis (Lacan - Zizek), biopolitics (Hardt and Negri) and pedagogy (Rancière).

A range of critical engagements with the work of Alain Badiou. This collection of 13 essays directly addresses the work of Alain Badiou, focusing specifically on the philosophical content of his work ...and the various connections he established with both his contemporaries and his philosophical heritage. * The first reassessment of Badiou's work since the publication of the English translation of Logics of Worlds * Critiques how Badiou sources and responds to existing philosophical arguments and traditions as well as the arguments he employs to do so * Examines Badiou's work through the lens of a number of thinkers and themes, from Cantor and category/topos theory, through Lacan and Lautman, to Sartre and subject
Robert Boncardo investigates how Stéphane Mallarmé, one of modernity's most ingenious yet obscure poets, became an object of major political significance for French intellectuals. He asks how this ...most refined and seemingly aristocratic of poets became the writer of choice for leftist intellectuals and reflects on the ambivalent relation between literature and its political destiny in modernity. With in-depth studies of Jean-Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière, along with shorter analyses of Jean-Claude Milner and Quentin Meillassoux, he situates Mallarmé within the philosophical and political projects of some of France's greatest thinkers.
