This is an in-depth study of the ethnic German minority in the Serbian Banat (Southeast Europe) and its experiences under German occupation in World War II. Mirna Zakić argues that the Banat Germans ...exercised great agency within the constraints imposed on them by Nazi ideology, with its expectations that ethnic Germans would collaborate with the invading Nazis. The book examines the incentives that the Nazis offered to collaboration and social dynamics within the Banat German community - between their Nazified leadership and the rank and file - as well as the various and ever-more damning forms collaboration took. The Banat Germans provided administrative and economic aid to the Nazi war effort, and took part in Nazi military operations in Yugoslav lands, the Holocaust and Aryanization. They ruled the Banat on the Nazis' behalf between 1941 and 1944, yet their wartime choices led ultimately to their disenfranchisement and persecution following the Nazis' defeat.
Winner of the 2016 George Bariţiu Prize In The Mortuary Archaeology of the Medieval Banat (10th - 14th centuries) Silviu Oţa highlights the interactions between different ethnic groups as reflected ...in burial customs. The book will deal with the Banat as a whole since the modern political borders are not identical with the cultural boundaries in the Middle Ages.
The Apuseni‐Banat‐Timok‐Srednogorie Late Cretaceous magmatic arc in the Carpathian‐Balkan orogen formed on the European margin during closure of the Neotethys Ocean. It was subsequently deformed into ...a complex orocline by continental collisions. The Cu‐Au mineralized arc consists of geologically distinct segments: the Apuseni, Banat, Timok, Panagyurishte, and Eastern Srednogorie segments. New U‐Pb zircon ages and geochemical whole rock data for the Banat and Apuseni segments are combined with previously published data to reconstruct the original arc geometry and better constrain its tectonic evolution. Trace element and isotopic signatures of the arc magmas indicate a subduction‐enriched source in all segments and variable contamination by continental crust. The magmatic arc was active for 25 Myr (~92–67 Ma). Across‐arc age trends of progressively younger ages toward the inferred paleo‐trench indicate gradual steepening of the subducting slab away from the upper plate European margin. This leads to asthenospheric corner flow in the overriding plate, which is recorded by decreasing 87Sr/86Sr (0.70577 to 0.70373) and increasing 143Nd/144Nd (0.51234 to 0.51264) ratios over time in some segments. The close spatial relationship between arc magmatism, large‐scale shear zones, and related strike‐slip sedimentary basins in the Timok and Pangyurishte segments indicates mild transtension in these central segments of the restored arc. In contrast, the Eastern Srednogorie segment underwent strong orthogonal intraarc extension. Segmental distribution of tectonic stress may account for the concentration of rich porphyry Cu deposits in the transtensional segments, where lower crustal magma storage and fractionation favored the evolution of volatile‐rich magmas.

Major magmatic arc concealed by postsubduction continental collision
Europe's active margin reconstructed using magma chemistry and geochronology
Distribution of magmatic‐hydrothermal ore deposits controlled by stress state
As a region, the Banat has many unique features owing to its specific geographical location, its multi- and intercultural composition, and the cultural diversity of the people who live there. The ...goal of this volume is to shine a spotlight on the inhabitants of the Banat, to reflect upon their historical experiences, to describe their mentalities, and to show how their attitudes have changed over time.
Reinventing the route "salt road" has the purpose to promote through cultural tourism, ecotourism, rural tourism and agrotourism, natural and anthropic resources on the navigable part of Mures River ...between the localities Bulci and Igris with possibilities for cross-border expansion until this river flows into Tisa and upstream to Alba Iulia, because the historical sources make reference to this occupation regarding salt trade since the time of Ahtum, the master of Urbs Morisena, and the existence of some traces of Christian life of Eastern rite at Cenad, Igris and Bulci. The most significant and accurate news about the Romanians living in the Western Region of Romania (Timis and Arad) in the Middle Age, of Turkish and Austro-Hungarian oppression are included in the Hungarian chronicles and other large works, which attest the transport of salt on Mures, even since the year 1138.

The strategies developed in the field of ecotourism contribute to the creation of a favourable environment in this sector of activity and to the meeting of tourists’ demands without endangering the ...natural resources in the Banat’s protected areas. Management should take into account the main requirements regarding the ecological exploitation of the areas, the judicious exploitation of the tourist flows and the establishment of support thresholds as well as the implementation of material recycling measures in the area. Cooperation between rural and ecological tourism produces benefits such as diversification of economic activities, development of infrastructure and increase of demand for rural goods and services – all this contributing to the long-term economic stability in areas with such natural resources.
German-language literature of the Banat develops under specific historical circumstances amidst a multi-ethnic Region, in which the multiple social-political, religious and linguistic relations to ...Romanians, Hungarians, Serbs and Jews find their immediate expression.
The beginning of the German-language writings of the Banat Swabians are under the aegis of the Austrian model, especially of the Viennese model. Here one mainly includes the extremely stimulating press and theater tradition of the Banat, which can still be remarked in the interwar period, and which created the conditions for the unfolding of a lively spiritual life.
Johann Friedel born in Timișoara, an outstanding representative of Josephine epistolary satire, was considered on account of his novels and letters to be the founder of the local German-language writings by several scholars.
Our research was occasioned by the construction of the connecting road between DN68-A1 and the site was conventionally called Site 7-Cerneteaz. The excavated area was 21 139 m2, of which the ...Sarmatian features were concentrated on an area approx. 4–5000 m2. Following the typological analysis, we could observe that the settlement has many similarities but also differences compared to the important sites researched and published in Banat (Timişoara-Freidorf, Arad-Barieră, Hodoni-Pustă, Șagu-Sit A1_1). First of all, the settlement stands out for its single chronological phase. Our excavations revealed the limits of habitation to the southwest and northeast. There are few chances that our field research will continue, but based an the relief, we can suppose that in the surface uncovered by us, we suprised a significant part of the settlements. The large, uncovered areas during the rescue excavations related to the road infrastructure allow us to make some observation regarding the internal organization of the settlements. In our case we can see that the annexes, which could be interpreted as dwelling, are grouped in the south-western part of the surface, and the workshops (smoker installations) in the opposite part of the group of features. Between these two grouping of features the storage pits of various types are located, whose initially destination cannot be interpreted with certainty. The chronological framework of the settlements researched by us is based on the chronology of the bronze brooch, with inverted foot, but also on analogies of ceramic pot fragments. In our opinion, the features we researched mainly dated in the 4th century A.D.
This work presents the results of the morphological measurements performed on working bees originating in 6 apiaries located in Caras-Severin and Timis Counties. The experiments were carried out ...during 15.08.2009-15.09.2009, on 412 bees belonging to the species Apis mellifica carpatica. During the experiment, we performed the following determinations: proboscis length, anterior wing length and width, posterior wing length and width, tibia length, tarsus length and we calculated the tarsal, cubital and radial indices. Successive to the statistical interpretation, we observed that the bees originating in the apiaries from Caras-Severin recorded bigger values in most parameters studied.
This paperwork reveals the results of the morphometric measurements performed on 200 worker bees from 5 apiaries from Timiș, Caraș-Severin and Mehedinți counties. The bees studied presented a high ...variability of characters, with the following values: proboscis length between 4.08 mm and 6.25 mm, anterior wing length with limits of 6.29-8.86 mm, and anterior wing width of 2.02-3.01; the posterior wing length was between 4.22 mm and 6.73 mm, and posterior wing width was 1.15-2.08 mm. Femur length was between 2.95 mm and 3.75 mm; tibia length presented values of 1.70 mm – 2.25 mm, and width was 0.39-0.80 mm. Basitarsus length was between 1.14 mm and 1.90 mm, and the width was between 0.43 mm and 0.90 mm. Tarsus length of the bees belonging to the 5 apiaries was comprised between 1.11 mm and 1.64 mm.
